Our first full week in P4!

This week, P4 have continued to work on their novel study of ‘The Legend of Spud Murphy’.  We used visualisation and freeze frames to help us think about techniques the author uses to make us laugh.  We all agreed that Marty sliding along the floor on his tummy like a crocodile and Spud skidding in silently on her slippers was very funny – but the unanimous favourite funniest part was Spud tricking Marty into stamping ‘I Love Barbie’ on his arm!  We made our own lifesize Spud, and created speech bubbles containing all the things we thought she might say (none of which were very nice!)  We also had fun designing our own gas-powered spud guns!

In indoor PE, we played a version of extreme dodgeball called Thunderball!  It was lots of fun, and we all listened carefully and stuck to the rules.  For outdoor PE, we had bootcamp!  Why don’t you ask us to show you a burpee?

We had a visit from a brain coach, Mr Turnbull, this week.  He spoke to us about how we feel when we become angry and taught us techniques to help us calm our thinking and emotions when we begin to feel anger building up.  We listened to a story about a boy named Ben Carson who had anger issues as a child, but grew up to be a world famous brain surgeon.  He left us with a little glitter jar, which will help us focus on the techniques shown.  Jessica very kindly went home and made more for us – thank you, Jessica!

We worked hard in writing this week, impressing Miss Thomson with our focus – well done, Primary 4!  We began by developing simple sentences into complex sentences, using a connective to add on extra information.  We then wrote our own creative stories, with a genre and theme of our own choosing.

Next week, class photos will be taken on Tuesday – so best hairstyles everyone!  We have a company visiting the school on Wednesday, called ‘Travelling by Tuba’. They will begin the day with a whole school performance, before holding workshops for the P3, P4/3 and P4 classes – who will then get to hold their own performance for the school.  Very exciting!

Project Playground

If you can spare some time on Friday 8th September and/or Friday 15th September between 1.00 pm -3.00 pm we will be working on developing our school playground and garden.

We are looking for volunteers to help tidy up both the playground and garden, fix the outdoor furniture, paint the surrounding fences etc. We hope as many people as possible are able to come along with brushes, spades, trowels, hoes etc and help us improve the outdoor learning spaces for the children.

Let’s hope the weather is kind to us. 🙂

First full week of school

After a week of full days, the Primary 1’s are settling into the routine very well.   It has been very busy.  They have had many experiences this week.

We have been learning to write our names using different materials. Look at some of the children’s work.

Also they have been learning to sort objects and pictures into big and small. Primary 1 have really enjoyed these activities throughout the week.

We have also been outside to start outdoor learning which involved going on a colour hunt.  We found many objects in the playground and stuck them onto a “colour wheel”. Primary 1 have been learning about Our Rights and Actions.  The children were enthusiastic in giving their thoughts about their rights.

Today the Primary 7 buddies came to class for a visit. They were working together to fill out their buddy booklet and helping us with our numbers.

Week 2 in P3.

This week we have been very busy and working very hard.  We have begun a book study on “The Adventures of the Wishing Chair” by Enid Blyton and even made our very own wishing chairs.  Here are just a few examples of them.

We also started to look at how the author uses adjectives to describe a character, which helps us imagine what they look like.  We have been trying to think of interesting adjectives for our own characters that Mollie and Peter could encounter on their adventures.  Also, we have had lots of fun using Kung Fu Punctuation to help us correctly punctuate sentences (will hopefully get pictures of this next week).

In Maths we have been consolidating our knowledge of numbers from 1-100, looking at place value and 100 squares.

We have just started French, learning the numbers 1-20.  We are getting very good at them, so maybe ask us at home to help us practice!

Looking forward to another fun week in P3!

P7 Weekly Update

After our first full week in P7, the words that have come to mind have been: busy, different, hard-working and fun – amongst many others.

Literacy

We have started our class novel on Divided City and we are enjoying the story so far.  We have acted our drama scenes and discussed discrimination because of race, gender and ethnicity. We are using Bloom’s questions to further our understanding of the text.  We were able to express our creative talents in our first story writing lesson.  We looked at the four aspects of VCOP and we are trying to incorporate this into our work.

Numeracy

We have revised written subtraction methods this week and some of us are working on tricky word problems that involve multiple calculations.  To help with our mental maths, we have started Number Talks.  These sessions allow us to discuss strategies to solve a problem rather than being the first to answer.  This gives more of us some confidence to answer and complete our work.

Health and Wellbeing

We were lucky to have a workshop on mindfulness with Mr Turnbull where we looked at controlling our emotions.  In class we have worked on our class charter and learning pit, as well as our aspirations for the future.

We have been looking at fitness and stamina for P.E. and tried to complete a mile circuit round the school – either walking, jogging or running – and everyone managed well.  We will continue to work on stamina and fitness this term as well as team games.

Looking Ahead

Next week we have our class photos on Tuesday, Travelling by Tuba performance on Wednesday, and our trip to the Risk Factory on Thursday.  Its going to be a busy week!

Primary 6/5 First Update

We have had a great first few weeks in Primary 6/5. We have been busy getting to each other as well as our new teacher and classroom. Our topic this term is Rights and Responsibilities so we have been exploring the Rights of the Child and comparing life as a child in the UK to children around the world. Mrs Thomson showed some of pictures of her trip to Tanzania to help us with this. We have been working hard in Maths and doing work on numbers and place value. We enjoyed going outside and finding items in the playground we could use as hundreds, tens and units. In literacy, we are focusing on persuasive writing at the moment and exploring different techniques we can use.

Our P.E days this term will be on a Monday and a Thursday. Please ensure your child has the appropriate kits for both indoor and outdoor sessions.

Finally, I am very pleased to be joining the Kirkhill community and I look forward to meeting all of you in due course!

Mrs Thomson

P7/6 News

This week in Numeracy the class have been busy consolidating our work on written addition using carrying. We have also moved onto revising written subtraction which involves borrowing. Some of the class found this quite tricky but by the end of the week they have become experts. I have also been impressed with the class during our first week of trying Number Talks and talking about our mental maths strategies. Keep working hard on learning those times tables too!

In Literacy we have learned about the ‘Reading Keys’ and how we are going to be using these alongside our reading throughout the year. We discussed Bloom’s reading tasks and watched a short video to help us understand this. We are all enjoying our class novel ‘Holes’ and have been making predictions about what is going to happen to the main character Stanley. Look out for reading books and homework coming home on Monday!

We also had a visit from our ‘brain coach’ Mr Turnbull on Wednesday. He told us a story about a boy who was bullied at school and managed to turn into a famous doctor. We discussed a range of emotions and Mr Turnbull was impressed with our answers. We were introduced to glitter jars which when we shake shows our brains when they are angry and confused and when we calm down and breathe the glitter jar does too.

On Friday morning, P7 helped their P1 buddies and P6 helped Primary 2 with their letter formation and reading stories. I was very impressed with the whole class at how well they helped out.

A reminder that P.E. kit must be brought on a Wednesday and Thursday.

Here are some of the highlights from our week:

” I liked shaking the glitter jars.” – Molly

” I enjoyed playing benchball.” – Torran
” I liked spending time with my buddy.” – Emma J
