P7 Update – Week 4

Maths Week Scotland

This week we celebrated maths with visitors, munchies and lots of maths activities.

Our Busy Start involved solving countdown style problems, playing mental maths bingo and working our problems from The Daily Rigour.  On Wednesday we even had some munchies (fruits and chocolate biscuits) with our maths.

We were very lucky to have Mr Boyle, one of the Maths teachers from Broxburn Academy, do some problem solving with us.  We had to work out the best deals for many products.  Morgan did very well at using strategies to solve the problems and was our Pupil of the Week.

In other areas of the curriculum, we had a visitor from the Social Subjects department at Broxburn Academy, Miss Eastwood!  She came to meet us and we got to ask her some burning questions about the academy.  We also started looking at our aspirations for the future.  We have children that want to be doctors, footballers and police officers! We want to learn to drive and lots of us want good grades to go to college or university to get our dream jobs!

Thoughts for the Week

“I enjoyed doing our aspirations” – Murrin

“I enjoyed having Mr Boyle teach us Maths” – Morgan

“I liked Meet The Teacher” – Toby

“I loved playing maths bingo” – Nicole

“I liked having a shot of the VR at Meet The Teacher” – Rachael

Have a great holiday weekend – we will see you Wednesday!

Magical Maths Week in P7/6

This week we have been celebrating Maths Week Scotland in the classroom with a variety of different activities. Thank you to the parents/carers who came along and joined us for Maths With Munchies and joined in with our shared start. We had a visit from Mr Boyle, a maths teacher at Broxburn Academy who got us to solve some problems involving offers from supermarkets. On Thursday, Mr Barrie from our Parent Staff Council gave up his time to come and talk to us about how he uses Maths in his job. We also watched a TED Talks video about a Mathemagician who was able to find the square roots of lots of different numbers. We have also continued with developing our mental maths strategies and Emma C was our pupil of the week for being able to multiply a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number mentally. Well done!

The class all really enjoyed our active spelling stations this week – especially the foam station. This helps us learn our weekly words in an active and fun way. In writing, we wrote a letter from Stanley to his Mum based on our class novel ‘Holes’. We had to use relevant information from the novel and it has shown Mrs Weir who has been listening carefully to the story.

Thank you to the parents/carers who came along to Meet The Teacher. It was great to see lots of adults engaging with the children about their aspirations. We talked lots about the different aspirations which we have for the future including passing our driving test, diving in the Great Barrier Reef, visiting France, going to Space and living in a cottage. What a lot of different ideas!

Panto auditions begin next week for some of the children.

Remember that school is closed on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th September. Have a lovely weekend. 🙂

Primary 1 Maths with Munchies

It was a lovely day, especially this morning as we had some visitors in.

People from home came to see what we have been up to in Maths and it was lovely to see so many faces.  Here are some of the pictures from this morning.

One of our children decided herself that she wanted to make numbers with paper and glue.  This is them, haven’t they turned out fantastic?

Project Playground

A big thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help us tidy our playground on Friday afternoon. If you can manage to volunteer this Friday (15th September 1.00-3.00 pm) we will be continuing to improve the playground by painting and fixing furniture.

We hope the rain stays off. 🙂

Working hard in P2/1

The boys and girls have been working hard this week in P2/1. Primary 1 have been learning some new sounds (m and c) and Primary 2 have be practising their blending of sounds to make words. In Numeracy Primary 1 have been learning about numbers and Primary 2 have been developing strategies for adding. We have all been learning about 2D shapes too.

This week for outdoor learning we worked in teams to make our own owls like the one from the story “Wow, said the Owl”, we think they were very good! We had to work together to find the materials and create the owl. Even though it was rainy, we had lots of fun.

On Thursday the photographer from the West Lothian courier took a photo of all the Primary 1 children, so keep your eyes peeled to see if you can spot them.

Next week is Maths Week Scotland and there will be lots of fun maths going on, if you can, please join us for Maths with Munchies on Tuesday morning.

Meet the Teacher is on Thursday at 2:15pm and 6pm. You will have the chance to find out a bit more P2/1 and the learning that will be going on this session.
