Term 3 – Week 1 – P7/6

We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We all enjoyed our Christmas holidays and are now back school ready to learn.

We have started this term by looking at New Year Resolutions which are our targets we hope to achieve in 2018. We also thought about our school targets for Term 3 and have all now got targets which we should achieve by Easter.

We have started our new topic which is called ‘A Moment in Time’ which is about different decades in the 20th Century. We began by having a carousel to find out what we already know about the 20th Century. We have learned what decades, centuries and millenniums are and how many years are in each time period. Mrs Weir gave us lots of different cards with different events from the 20th Century on them, our job was to sort them into the correct decades. Some of us did well at this, and some us were very surprised at some of the decades which things happened in. In Writing, we had to think about our personal opinions about what were the best and worst things which happened in the 20th Century.

Here’s our thoughts for the week:

” I learned that Elvis Presley did not die the way that I thought he did.” – Ashley

” I was surprised that the film Lady and the Tramp was so old.” – Kyla

“I was surprised that i-pods only came out in the 21st Century.” – Liam

“I was surprised at how old the Twin Towers were.” – Finlay

“I’ve enjoyed learning my Scots poem.” – Blair

“I did better at my writing this week.” – Zach

“I liked doing the timeline sorting activity.” – Molly

“I’m proud of my writing this week.” – Brayden

“I’m also proud of my writing as I got to show Miss Henderson.” – Jenna

“I improved my writing this week.” – Rhys

” I was surprised that Pong was the first ever computer game.” – Stephen

“I thought personal writing was easier than imaginative writing.” – Karis

” I was surprised at how old Lego was. It was created in the 1940s.” Emma C

“I enjoyed being back at school.” – Sarah

“I quite enjoyed the carousel activity in my group.” – Amy

“I now know what a decade and a century are.” – Emily-Louise

“I learned what the 20th Century was.” – Torran

“I learned what a Millennium is.” – Emma J

“I found out that Elvis didn’t die as I thought he did.” – Temperance

” I liked the sorting activity.” – Aaron

“I enjoyed the carousel activity.” – Umme

“I liked writing on the laptop.” – Neil

Christmas week in Primary 1

What a busy week it has been in Primary 1.

Monday we had a crafts afternoon with adults from home.  We made reindeer hats, Chridtmas trees, hand print Santas and wreaths.  On Wednesday afternoon it was the first Golden club event.  Thursday we went for our Christmas church service, we all seemed to enjoy it and the singing was beautiful. Primary 7 readers were fantastic too.  Friday we watched a pantomime by M&M productions.  It was Peter Pan and all of Primary 1 really loved it.

Also this week Primary 1 have been practicing their symmetry by making snowflakes.  It was very tricky but they look fabulous.

We made salt dough decorations too which the children loved to make and paint.

We used problem solving skills to wrap boxes.  Everyone enjoyed this problem solving activity.

We also practiced our sight words/tricky words.  We played bingo, painted to find the magic word and used jigsaw trees to make the words.

We learnt this week the difference between tattling and reporting.  This was to allow us to become more independent and when we should sort something out or when to tell an adult.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Primary 2 Update

What a fun week leading up to Christmas! On Monday we had an afternoon of crafts, and the children made some lovely things, including Christmas trees, reindeer hats, wreaths, Santa hand prints, and more! We had our Golden Club event on Wednesday, for those pupils who have already got into the Golden Club. Thursday we had our Christmas church service, where the children did some lovely singing. This morning we had a brilliant pantomime performance of Peter Pan, thanks to the M&M pantomime group.

In between all the fun Christmas events, the children had their reading groups, wrote some lovely acrostic poems, and practised their adding, taking away, and 3D shapes. We did some yoga and played tig games and musical bumps for PE.

It’s been a fun and event-filled term. I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and New Year, and I will see you in 2018!

A Busy Festive Week in Primary 1

It has been a busy and exciting week in Primary 1.

We had a strange visitor in class this week, we came back into class to find a surprise.  We thought that the mystery footprints were from a reindeer.  Also there was a letter from Santa asking us for help to find Comet his reindeer who was lost.  We used this for our writing this week and wrote about all the clues that we found in class that may have been Comet.

We have been looking at blending our sounds to make words and also looking at our tricky words which cannot be sounded out.  We need to take a picture of these and try to remember them in our heads.  We have been doing activities that include matching the letters to create the words.

This week we had our vibrant vocabulary.  It was using the book ‘The Three Bears and the Great Big Storm’.  We really enjoyed this book and our new sophisticated words.  These were: creaked, echoed, shivered, shuddered and wailing.

Also in writing,  we used the story The Bear and the Great Storm to write about wild weather that we have experienced. Some of us recalled hearing crackling thunder and twisty wind!

In Maths, we have been continuing to learn about symmetry.  This week was using shapes in our symmetry.  Also, we continued our learning about repeating patterns in a Christmas context! We made our own set of Christmas lights using paint and tried to create a repeating pattern.

On Wednesday it was our Christmas party and we had a special visit from Santa which we all were excited for.  At our party we danced, played games and ate some goodies.  We all loved our fabulous hats and everyone looked fabulous in the hats they made.

We had our buddies down on Friday which we love.  They were helping us to do maths and our sounds.  We all really enjoyed this.

In class, we have had visitors up to mischief.  We have Tinsel and Jingle, the elves which help us in our learning as they go to different areas in class each day but also can get up to mischief.

Just a reminder, Monday afternoon at 2.15pm is the infant (primary 1-3) craft afternoon.  All parents, carers or family are welcome to come and make some Christmas crafts with the children.

Primary 2 Update

Here are some comments from the children about what we did this week:

“We had a Christmas party. We went to lots of different classrooms for party games, and one of the games was corners.” – Mollie

“We made party hats for the Christmas party.” – Lily

“My hat was a Christmas tree. I made it with my mummy.” – Lauren

“We had Santa. He was giving us books. I got Puss in Boots. And I love Christmas!” – Kiara

Here is a photo of the children all dressed up in their Christmas outfits and party hats:

“We did maths. I finished my Christmas maths worksheet. My picture was Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer.” – Logan M.

“We wrote instructions with Mrs. Bowden. They were how to make a cup-and-ball toy.” – Natalie

“We had cards with pictures of 3D shapes and there were cards with descriptions of the 3D shapes and we had to match them up. Some were quite tricky, and my table was done first.” – Lily

“We were doing some yoga, and it was about Frozen the movie. We did lots of different yoga poses.” – Alyssa

Stay safe on the ice, and have a lovely weekend!

What a week in P7/6!

This week we have been very busy delivering two performances of Puss in Boots to two different audiences. We loved every minute of performing and were very pleased with the final performance on Thursday night. We would like to thank all of our parents/carers/friends and family members who came along to support us during the performances. We would also like to thank them for helping with costumes and supporting us during learning our lines.

During our Writing lesson we were trying to improve the vocabulary which we use in our stories. We had to make Mrs Weir’s short piece of writing better and Mrs Weir thought we did a great job of this. This gave us a bank of vocabulary to use in our writing. We were allowed to choose between 4 Christmas/Winter themed titles and then had to plan and write our stories. We then had to highlight the pieces of V.C.O.P within our own stories. We feel that we have all written better stories this week.

On Friday morning we have been making reindeer Christmas cards with P2/1. We are very pleased with Rudolph’s pop out nose and loved helping the younger children.

Have a lovely weekend 🙂

Primary 2/1 update

Over the last two weeks P2/1 have been very busy.  We took part in a number of book week activities which we really enjoyed.  We has several visitors come in to read to us including hearing the latest Julia Donaldson story, several Hairy McClary stories and a visit from Hairy McClary himself and a Scottish sing-song after we heard ‘Wee Granny and the Ceilidh.  Our P6 and 7 buddies came to read with us and we also had our own big bedtime read in the classroom.  Everyone got their bookbug bags (primary 1) and Read, Write, Count bags (primary 2).  As a class we read the three books from the primary 1 bag and then used tally marks to record our favourite one.

This week we performed our nativity ‘Mary’s knitting’ and we thoroughly enjoyed the chance to perform on stage.  On Thursday we then got the chance to be the audience while we watched the primary 7s dress rehearsal for their panto ‘Puss and Boots’ and we thought it was wonderful.  Back in class we have been learning about character by focusing on the different people in Cinderella and made story maps so we could retell the story in a different way.  In maths we have been using some new number bond trees to work in pairs and investigate different ways to make 10.

Finally a reminder that our craft afternoon has been postponed until Monday 18th December from 2.15 – 3.15.
