P7 Update

This week in P7 we have been sharing our stories of what we got up to during our ‘Snow Days’.  It was great to hear about all the fun things everyone did with their friends and families and we even shared some Snow Learning activities.

We held our belated World Book Day on Thursday and it was lovely to see the effort everyone went to dressing up as book characters.  We had a special visit from Mike Nicholson, a Scottish author who spoke with us about how he began writing and helped us think of ways we can start a story if we are lacking inspiration.  To end the day we read with our buddies.

In maths we have continued looking at fractions.  Some of us have really gained confidence in recognising, simplifying and converting fractions.  we have all been working on quick recall of our times tables and are challenging ourselves to know our facts of by heart.

As part of our topic this term we have looked at the Royal Family and the line of succession from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II.  This has tied in nicely to a very special trip our Head Boy and Head Girl are undertaking next week.  Leah and Thapelo are off to represent Kirkhill at the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.  We know they will represent us well and hope they enjoy the experience.

P7 have a busy week coming up.  On Tuesday we will be trying to Crack the Easter Code at Strathbrock church.  That night our choir will be competing in their Glee competition.  They have been working so hard and we wish Mrs Smith and all of the choir good luck!  For the parents and carers of the children attending transition camp, we are holding a meeting on Wednesday after school (3:30pm).  For those not able to attend I will pop a copy of the presentation on the blog. 🙂

Have a great weekend 🙂

P5 update

Another fun and busy week for P5!

We have enjoyed taking part in active learning activities across the curriculum. Especially in literacy and Numeracy as well as designing and painting our own planets in Science. We shared our ‘Snow Day’ activities with the class and wrote interesting and descriptive recounts in Literacy.

We had our belated World Book Day on Thursday 8th and everyone really enjoyed all the reading activities and dressing up for it! There were many amazing dressed up book characters but Alanna McNeill was picked as our class winner for best costume!

We were lucky enough to have a morning with the author, Mike Nicholson, who gave us the pleasure of sharing his inspirations for writing and where his ideas came from for his Mystery book series. We were even given a signed copy of his first ever published book to have in our class library!

Today we had Kirkhill Chatter 4 and all the litter vertical groups did a fantastic job in making sure our playground is clean and today.

Reese Williamson was one of the winners for the Gala Float Design competition and Chloe Wilson was our Star of the Week for her excellent recount about her Snow Day activities. Well done!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend 🙂

P4 Update

It was lovely to hear all about everyone’s snow day adventures!  Sounds like there was lots of fun in the snow, but lots of warm snuggling with hot chocolate too 🙂

It’s been a very busy week in P4.  On Thursday we celebrated our belated World Book Day with lots of different activities.  We enjoyed a presentation from children’s author, Mike Nicholson who told us all about his series of books about the ‘Museum Mystery Squad’.  He told us about his inspirations and how to come up with good ideas for a mystery story.  We enjoyed working out a few puzzles too – including hieroglyphics and anagrams!  We even have a signed copy of ‘Museum Mystery Squad and the Case of the Curious Coins’ for our class.  We participated in the book swap; lots of us are looking forward to reading our new books at home.  We created our own bunting about our favourite books and shared our home learning models of our favourite characters.  Miss Thomson was very impressed with the creativity – well done, Primary 4!  We finished off our novel, ‘Kaspar Prince of Cats’ which most of us really enjoyed and have chosen ‘There’s a Werewolf in my Tent’ by Pamela Butchart for our next novel.

In maths, we worked on consolidating our written and mental addition strategies.  Lots of us are enjoying our chimney sums, and most of us are now able to carry tens confidently.  We have been working on time including quarter past/quarter to, five minute intervals and converting between digital and analogue.  A few of us have even figured out how to tell the time on 24 hour clocks!  Keep up the good work, P4.

Today we enjoyed working in our groups for Kirkhill Chatter.  Lots of us got to go outside in the spring sunshine for a playground and garden clean-up or to help develop some playground games to encourage lots of positive play together at break and lunch time.  The others were learning all about Fair Trade and how this can make a big difference in the life of farmers and workers all over the world.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

World Book Day – Take 2!

We had great day yesterday taking part in our belated World Book Day celebrations. Here are some of the fun activities we got up to!

Primary 1, 2/1 and 2s went on a bear hunt and found a teddy bears picnic!

Primay 3s took part in a real life Where’s Wally search in the play ground and had a go at creating their own Where’s Wally pictures. They looked great!

Primary 4s to 7s enjoyed the visit from children’s author Mike Nicholson who shared some of his books and gave the children lots of top tips for writing creating their own stories.

Thanks to all those who dressed up and brought in books for our Book Swap. Well done to all the teachers for their fabulous outfits!

P7/6 Update

This week we have been busy in our learning after our snow days last week.

In Maths, we have continued our learning about fractions. We have been figuring out lots of fractions of amounts. Some of us have also been learning to simplify fractions to their simplest form. The Tetrahedrons were challenged with some holistic style questions about fractions of amounts – they did a super job even though it was quite tricky. Next stop – decimals!

In writing this week we had to produce an imaginative piece of writing about anything that we liked. We had to follow the success criteria and then give ourselves 2 stars and a wish at the end of our piece of writing. Mrs Weir then assessed our writing using the Criterion Scale. We are all pleased with our progress in writing.

On our belated World Book Day, we got a visit from the author Mike Nicholson who has written books such as Catscape and Grimm. We liked hearing about how he writes his stories and enjoyed listening about his favourite books. He encouraged us to plan our writing and ideas to make good stories. We will try this out next week. We then had a Book Character parade in the afternoon and a quiz to guess the teachers favourite book. We then did some shared writing/reading with our buddies in P1 & P2/1.

Have a lovely weekend 🙂

Kirkhill Primary School Reopening Monday 5th March

Due to the hard work and commitment of Operational Services and Facilities Management staff last week and over the weekend, Kirkhill Primary School we be OPEN tomorrow (Monday 5th March) to all children and staff.  West Lothian have taken this decision as a result of risk assessments being carried out in all schools today.  Please note that there will be NO BREAKFAST CLUB tomorrow morning to allow staff to get into school and make final preparations for the children returning at 8.50am.

Due to the heavy snowfall last week alternative entrance/exit arrangements will be in place tomorrow and are as follows:

  • One narrow path from the front gate has been cleared to the main entrance of the school and another path from the back entrance of the school building to the nursery. It may be difficult for pushchairs to get up this narrow path unless this clears further this evening and in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
  • All nursery parents/carers will be required to enter the school building and exit through the back entrance to go to the nursery. Once children have been dropped off at the nursery parents/carers should again exit through the school building and out of the main entrance front door.
  • Our nursery will be open from 8am but we would ask parents/carers that , if possible, they drop their children off at nursery from 8.30am to allow staff to prepare for reopening.
  • There has been no path cleared at the rear of the school and will only be accessible to staff and delivery services. It would be unsafe for children to be brought into nursery using this entrance.
  • The early years’ area entrance has not yet been cleared and so all early years children should enter in the morning through the front entrance door along with the upper school children. It is hoped that by the end of the day this area will have been cleared and children will be able to exit the building through their usual exit door.
  • As the playground areas have not been cleared we would ask parents to drop their children at school as close to 8.50am, as possible.
  • The school will be open from 8.30am to allow children to come into the school and wait in the gym hall until it is time to go to their classes, however we would be grateful if children could be dropped off at school as close to 8.50am, as possible.
  • We will risk assess the playground prior to break and lunchtime to determine whether the children will be allowed to go outside to play at these times. If through risk assessment, it is unsafe to allow all of the children to be out at one time wet break/lunch arrangements will be in place until it is assessed that it is safe for the children to go outside for breaks/lunch.
  • If we have wet break/lunch arrangements in place, class teachers may decide to take their classes outside for learning purposes or for time outdoors during the school day, if it is assessed that this would be appropriate. With this is mind we would appreciate it if children come to school prepared for outdoor play/learning and have a change of clothes and footwear with them in case they require to change out of ‘snowy’ clothes.
  • Safe Arrivals and members of the Senior Leadership Team will be in the playground in the morning to guide children/parents/carers in the right direction.

We hope that all of our families will appreciate the need for these arrangements to be put in place to allow our school to re-open to all children.

Message from West Lothian Council

Re-opening nearly  100 schools following severe weather is a major job, with significant checks carried on every building required before it can be safely opened, such as ensuring they are still structurally sound, heating is working and toilet and catering facilities are in good working order.

Snow clearing work in school grounds is ongoing to ensure a safe route for staff and pupils, with up to five feet of snow drifts requiring cleared in some schools.

Due to the amount of specialist work required, it has not been possible to safely open every school on Monday.

If your child’s school is open, we would encourage you to send them if it safe to do so. Parents should carry out their own assessment of whether it is safe for their child to travel to school from their home, depending on their individual circumstances.

Parents/carers should take extra care when travelling to school on Monday, especially as some crossing patrol staff may not be in place. Revised school transport arrangements are in place for some pupils, and will be available fromwww.westlothian.gov.uk/schoolclosures  from 6pm on Sunday 4 March.

There will be no breakfast clubs on Monday, and lunch menus may vary from usual.
