The seeds have landed… (and been planted!)

On Monday, we finally received our Rocket Science seeds!  It is so exciting to have something in our classroom that has actually travelled in space!

Today, along with all the other schools participating in the experiment, we carefully planted our seeds.  We received two packs of seeds – one pack was blue and one pack was red.  One pack of the seeds have been to the ISS and stored in microgravity and one pack hasn’t, it has remained here on Earth – we don’t know which is which!  We had to be extremely careful so that we did not mix any of them up, as this could affect the results of the experiment.  We made sure we carried out a fair test      by keeping most variables the same – we used the same compost, the same size of seed trays, the same materials for labels and we will be keeping our seeds at the same temperature and giving them the same amount of water.  We have to turn the trays 180 degrees every two days to ensure they get similar amounts of light.  This means that the only variable changed is where the seeds were previously stored, so any difference in growth is due to being/not being is space.

We will have to watch our seeds and record any growth or changes very carefully.  This data will then be sent to the Royal Horticultural Society, be combined with the results from the other participants and studied by scientists.

We hope we find out which pack of seeds DID go to space!!

We will keep you updated with any changes!
