We had a brilliant day out at New Lanark (and lovely weather helped too!)  We loved looking around the houses, and it made our topic of the Highland Clearances really come to life!  We looked round some mill workers’ homes, Robert Owen’s house and the mill itself.  We loved the Annie Macleod Experience – though some of us thought the ride should go upside-down!  We also visited the Victorian classroom where we wore the uniforms and had a chance to write on slates.

We learned lots about life in the 1800s and about what a special place New Lanark was.  One of the founders of New Lanark, Robert Owen, was a man who believed in treating people well and giving everyone a good standard of living.  Did you know that the first nursery school in the world was in New Lanark?  And Robert Owen’s local shop with fair prices for his workers (with profits used to pay for the school) helped form the idea of the Co-Operative Society which still exists today.
