On Tuesday, we had a great time trying lots of new sports at Sky Sports Living for Sports Live.  We enjoyed meeting our athlete mentors who included some Olympic and Commonwealth athletes – Courtney Fry (Boxing), Andrew Bridge (Basketball), Daniel Caines (Athletics), Neil Danns (Skateboarding), Paul Broadbent (rugby League) and Jenna Downing (Inline Skating).  We participated in six different activities – athletics, rugby, boxing, healthy eating, problem solving and basketball.  In each activity we had volunteers from Sky who were facilitating and available to help us if needed.  We enjoyed all the activities and participated really well in each of them.  Mrs Alston, Miss Thomson and Mrs Outram were very impressed by how well P5 represented Kirkhill  – well done to you all!

On Wednesday, we found out it was International Women’s Day.  We discussed why this was important and thought about how different life would be for some members of the class (including Miss Thomson!) if we had lived 100 years ago.  We thought about how important it is not to take for granted the opportunities we have now as some people fought really hard to gain these for us – and in some parts of the world some people still don’t have these opportunities available to them.  We read ‘Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World’ by Kate Pankhurst (whose Great Granny appears in the book!), before choosing a ‘woman who changed the world’ of our own to research and give a presentation on.  Our choices ranged from Benazir Bhutto to Joan of Arc and Michelle Obama to Elizabeth Blackwell.  We looked at the art of Frida Kahlo and are producing our own interpretation of her work using pastels.

We continued to work on multiplication in maths, though revised addition and subtraction too.  We will continue to revise concepts throughout the remainder of the year, and will begin to do this through ‘holistic questioning’ where we will use previously learned skills in context to solve problems.

We had an extra session with Mugen Taiko this week, to make up for the missed session due to our show.  We wrote lyrics for our own raps!  It was trickier than we thought, but we got there in the end!  We are growing more confident in our beats and rhythms as well as moving on and off the drums in order.  Less than 3 weeks till our big showcase at Howden Park Centre!
