This week in maths we’ve been learning about place value. We found out that the position of the digit in a number tells us its value – for example, in 634 the digit 3 is in the ‘Tens’ column which tells us it is worth 3 tens (or thirty). Having a good understanding of place value will really help us with our four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as we move up the school. We will keep practising this, before moving on to some addition and subtraction – including carrying and exchange!
We have been learning a little about Shakespeare this week! We are reading a version of Macbeth – which is a tale most foul, of witchcraft, deceit and murder! Why don’t you ask us about some of the characters we’ve met so far? They’re pretty nasty! We didn’t know who Shakespeare was, though some of us recognised the names of some of his plays – such as ‘Romeo and Juliet’. We found out that he was a famous writer from the times of Queen Elizabeth I (and then we wanted to find out all about her and her father, Henry VIII, too!) We are reading this in preparation for a visit to the school by Andy Cannon Storytelling who will tell P5-7 the story of Macbeth, and take us on a thousand-year journey…
In art, we looked at some optical illusions – we thought they were really cool! We wondered if any parents remembered the ‘Magic Eye’ books? We made our own 3D hands using an easy trick – they are looking very good.
