STEAM WEEK

 

 

Float/ sink

Resources: A washing basin/ large container, water and a range of items that float and sink.
1. Fill a washing up basin or large container with water.
2. Find a few items that float. For example, apple, sponge and pencil.
3. Find a few items that sink. For example, keys, penny and spoon.
4. Let the child experiment with the items and find out if they sink or float in the water.

Cup Tower Challenge
Resources you will need: Plastic or Paper Cups
Get the children to build towers out of plastic/ paper cups.
1. Put a few of the cups in a line. This will  be the bottom base.
2. Start to build the tower up by placing cups in between the cups of the bottom base and keep on doing this as you build up
3. Have competitions between family/ friends to see who can build the tallest towers out of the cups

Exploring Ice Activity

Steps:
1. Put the ice into a container.
2. Look at the ice in the container. What can you see in it? What shape is the ice?
3. Touch the ice to find out how it feels. Does it feel smooth or rough? Is it cold or hot?
4. Watch the ice as it melts. What has caused the ice to melt?
Resources: Ice and a container to observe the ice melting in.

Building Blocks Challenge

Steps: Build a tower of Blocks as tall as you. Was it difficult to make it balance? How many blocks tall are you? How many blocks of a certain colour did you use?
Then make a model out of 20 blocks. Use the same 20 blocks to make a different model.

Activity Senses Scavenger Hunt

1. Use your senses to find something:
⦁ Smooth
⦁ Rough
⦁ That makes a noise
⦁ Round
⦁ Yellow
⦁ That has a smell
⦁ You can eat
⦁ Red

2. Think about what part of your body that you used when doing this scavenger hunt for seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling.

Listening walk

1. Take part in a listening walk. Walk around your house or go on a walk outside with an adult to listen to all the sounds that are in the world around you.
2. What did you hear when you were on the walk? Did you know what all the sounds were?
3. Did they sound loud or quiet?
4. Were they long or short sounds?

Push/ pull scavenger hunt

1. Help your child find something that you can push and pull. For example, a door, chair or drawer.
2. Help your child find something that you push. For example, the buttons on a remote/phone or kicking a ball.
3. Help your child find something that you pull. For example, putting on socks or taking a book off a shelf.
