We created our very own Scottish dictionary and we read a number of different poems and discussed what they meant as a class.

For homework, the pupils were asked to learn a poem. Pupils then recited their poems in front of the class. Well done to everyone. Miss Beattie was soooo proud of the level of confidence, memorization and the use of actions and tone during the performances. The pupils then voted for two people they thought deserved to recite their poem at the Scots assembly and they both did FANTASTIC!

We also learned a little bit about the artist Chuck Close and we have all been inspired by his photo-realism techniques. We have been focusing on using line, colour and shape to recreate a famous Scottish figure using the styles of Chuck Close…stay tuned if you want to see the finished artwork!

We also made shortbread as part of Scots week which was a success. We were learning how to work in small teams to follow a set of instructions in the form of a recipe. It was great fun, I just hope the shortbread tasted as nice as it looked! It also tied in well with our topic is math’s which is measure.

Our novel is Journey to the River Sea which ties in well with our topic which is the rainforest. As a class we came up with ideas to help us write a character description about the main character of the story (Maia). We then peer assessed each others work, relating back to our success criteria. Some of the work has made it to our display, along with our research work, our rainforest dictionaries and pictures, which is just outside our classroom!

We were also learning about setting and how to write about this successfully in an imaginative story. We used the rainforest as the setting and decided that using adjectives that related to the 5 senses would help us with our writing. We also used our knowledge of the rainforest and similes, metaphors and alliteration to make our sentences more interesting. The majority of us even wrote in paragraphs!

In P.E, we are continuing with our gymnastics on a Tuesday and fitness on a Thursday. Yesterday, we took part in 5 different circuits that tested our fitness levels. It was exhausting but great fun!

P5 and P5/4C also had a very special visitor from Soccer Street in on Wednesday who is going to be helping us to improve our football skills.

In math’s we are learning about measure. So far we are able to measure in mm and cm and can convert between these two measurements. We now have a better understanding of how to work out the area of a rectangle, square and a triangle using a formula. A couple of people even challenged themselves to finding the area of a circle! We have just moved onto weight and will be looking at grams/kilograms and converting between the two.

Have a great weekend!

We have had a busy few weeks in P5B.
