{"id":8209,"date":"2023-04-24T17:02:05","date_gmt":"2023-04-24T16:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/wl\/beatlieblog\/?p=8209"},"modified":"2023-12-18T13:18:27","modified_gmt":"2023-12-18T12:18:27","slug":"__trashed-5__trashed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/wl\/beatlieblog\/2023\/04\/24\/__trashed-5__trashed\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth Day 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Earth Day 2023 &#8211; Invest in our Planet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year for Earth Day we decided that we would invest in our planet using clean and safe energy:<\/p>\n<p># by investing in some solar lamps for each class to use on the day<\/p>\n<p># by collecting monies to donate to Solar Aid to help families in need<\/p>\n<p>Through this participation we were using clean energy and giving the tools for others to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Families have no choice but to rely on poor alternatives such as homemade torches, candles and kerosene lamps.<\/p>\n<p>These dangerous devices are imperilling health, impairing education, wasting household income and emitting astonishingly high amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Worst of all, families have to risk their lives every single night with open flames. It doesn\u2019t have to be like this.<\/p>\n<p>The whole school participated in Earth day &#8211; here are just a few of the activities we had fun experiencing:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" width=\"474\" height=\"311\" src=\"https:\/\/sway.office.com\/s\/6sOhwQpDJaQV6MhW\/embed\" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen ><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your generous gift.\u00a0Through donations of \u00a335 from pupils and staff along with a donation of \u00a310 from the Fairtrade Tuck Shop we are able to give \u00a345 to Solar Aid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your support means we can reach remote villages bringing solar to places where no one else goes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without your help, these communities would remain in the dark with only candles or kerosene lamps for light. Your donation will make this a problem of the past from the moment they switch on a solar light.<\/p>\n<p>When the sun goes down at 6pm in sub-Saharan Africa, 590 million people are living in darkness. They have no access to electricity. There is no switch on the wall to turn on the light.
