World Book Day 2026
World Book Day took place on 5 March 2026. Armadale Academy was appointed to be a hub for the distribution of World Book Day books and tokens. We received copies of all the books, and these were displayed and given out in the library. Pupils and parents from all the local primaries, and the rest of the community were invited to come swap their tokens after school in the days leading up to World Book Day.
We also celebrated World Book Day and reading all week in school. Staff participated in the creation of videos reading aloud and hiding behind their favourite books. Pupils were then asked to guess the ‘masked’ readers. All S1 students took part in a book quiz in the Assembly Hall and created fabulous book plates in class.
On World Book Day, staff dressed up – some pupils were disconcerted by seeing Anne, Annie, Coraline, Dorothy, Gandalf, Lady Macbeth, and Mr Toad wandering the corridors. However, the star of the day was definitely Miss Reilly who presented an extremely convincing Pennywise, terrifying several pupils.
Staff from all departments also participated in a literary quiz in the library at lunchtime. Competition was fierce but English and Science were joint winners of the bragging rights! Miss Brown and Miss McDougall were our very able quizmasters.

After school, we held a “book blether café” and pupils (and all the young swimmers) were delighted to be able to swap their tokens for the World Book Day books. We suspect the senior students who swarmed after their twilight study sessions may have been rather more interested in the biscuits.
We ended the week with a session in the Armadale Partnership Centre on Saturday, 7 March, where Mrs Lumsden distributed the books (and stickers) to users of the public library. All in all, it was great fun and we loved engaging with the school and wider community and sharing our love of reading!
