Co-ordinates.

We did some work on co-ordinates in class today and some of the children asked if there were any games on the internet which they could play which would help them remember how to find co-ordinates.
Here are some links.

Author visit

We had a visit from the author Stuart Reid today. We had a lot of fun and hope he comes back for another visit!

He gave us some sweets to throw at him everytime he said the words “false teeth” in the chapter he read to us!

Boats – Who will be the winner?

More boats!

We have been busy making boats at home using different materials.

Jamie's boat
Adam's boat

Adam and Jamie built their boats/baskets out of foil. Eilidh used a plastic tub.

Adam’s boat was able to hold 8 large marbles and 30 small marbles, while Jamie’s could only hold 8 large marbles and 11 small marbles. However, Eilidh’s boat could hold 8 large marbles and 65 small marbles!

Here are some more boats that P4 pupils made. Do you think there is a boat that will beat Eilidh’s record? Let us know and leave a comment! We will soon let you know who is the winner of our boat competition!

Science week – Aged paper

We have been making lots of tea in P4! Unfortunately, it was not to drink but to paint with! To make our paper look like it was from the time of the Ancient Egyptians, we painted it with tea and threw a couple of coffee granules on to the wet paper to add some darker spots.

We discussed why the paper changes colour and decided that the tea stains the paper.

What is the name of the chemical in tea that stains the paper?

Science Week – sink or float?

Inspired by the story of Moses and how the queen found him floating in a reed basket along the River Nile, P4 decided to build a model of a reed boat.

We discussed which materials we can use to build our boat thinking about the properties of that material. We thought paper and card would absorb the water so we decided against those materials. We dicussed other materials too and decided straws would be best.

Here is a picture of some of us building our boats.

The moment of truth to see if the boats will float!

Eilidh was worried that her boat might not float because she had wrapped a lot of masking tape around her boat making it quite heavy. Luckily, it was not a problem and her boat floated!

Commenting

This morning we thought about commenting on people’s writing on blogs.

We read and enjoyed the stories on this blog page.

We thought about some rules or ideas for good commenting. This is what we used.

● 1.Acknowledge the author – use their name in your reply.

● 2.Give a specific compliment – say what it is you like.

● 3.Agree or disagree with what they say…but ALWAYS say why.

● 4.Be appropriate.

● 5.Be polite.

● 6.Give some details, ask a questions or add some information or your opinion.

We then added some of the comments onto the blog page.
