Sumdog Competition

Sumdog’s West Lothian maths contest has started today, Monday 10th March 2017. Torphichen Primary School has entered Sumdog competitions in the past and the last one we entered we came 2nd!

Sumdog uses educational games to motivate children in numeracy and maths. When students master skills, Sumdog rewards them: their virtual pets learn tricks. Each correct answer earns a virtual coin, which can be spent in Sumdog’s on-screen store.

We have organised for each class to have 30 minute a day Sumdog sessions between Monday and Thursday. The challenge is to answer 1000 questions per child before Thursday.  We would encourage that during this week the children also logon at home.

Below outlines the potential prizes that could be won for taking part in local and national contests:

  • Overall winner: Sumdog Mathematics and Certificate of Achievement
  • Daily Winner: Printable Certificate of Achievement
  • Top 10 Student: Printable Certificate of Achievement
  • Participation Reward: an item for the child’s Sumdog house

Thank You Ms Lecoq

P3/4 had a wonderful day thanks to Ms Lecoq and her knowledge in Science. She came into class today to work with us for a whole morning, showing us how to investigate materials as real scientists do. Ms Lecoq used plastazote as an example and we were able to see how this particular material changes with heat. We moulded and produced our own Ancient Egyptian Death Masks when learning about its properties.

We would like to say a huge thank you!! The masks look great.

Fairtrade Games at Lunchtime

Dear Pupil, Parent or Carer,
On Tuesday the 7th, Wednesday 8th, Thursday 9th of March, the Global Committee is holding a games room in P3/4 to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. There will be lots of different Fairtrade games to play and pupils can enter this year’s Fairtrade Easter Egg Competition too. There may even be some leftover tuck shop goodies for sale. It will be held at lunchtime.
Yours sincerely
The Global Committee

Spanish in P3/4

In P3/4, we have been learning how to pronounce body parts in Spanish. We made a matching game with pictures and words. We also learned how to sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. Watch this youtube clip and we will teach you the song too.

Merryn: “We have learned our numbers using a youtube channel. We played bingo which was fun.”

Elliot: “We played a matching game on the interactive whiteboard. I thought it was quite challenging.”

Kathryn: “My favourite was learning the Colores, Colores song and I had fun when we were learning the Spanish colours.”

Georgia: “I like everything about Spanish, especially learning the fun songs.”

Douglas: “I can say different Spanish words in different countries where people speak Spanish.”

Joe: “I liked it when we sang this Body Parts song. I like Simon Says as well”

Andrew: “My favourite song is Dias De La Semana. Here it is.”
