Primary 3/4 took on a whole new look on Friday as we transformed ourselves into monsters and ghouls! Halloween was with us once more!We had our fancy dress parade after our assembly in the morning, then after playtime we had lots of halloween fun in the hall! Congratulations to Hannah who was our class fancy dress winner, on her birthday too, a day for her to remember!!
There was a lot of spooky looking folk around Stoneyburn Primary on Friday October 30th! Everyone had lots of fun dressing up, bobbing for apples, playing games and parading around, showing off their fantastic fancy dress!
We hope the children’s family and friends enjoyed seeing the super costumes everyone wore to school on Friday- a fantastic effort was made by all and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone for that. Congratulations to our Fancy Dress winners from each class, pictured below- we are not kidding when we say it was VERY difficult to choose the winners………the standard of dress was fantastic across the entire school! The children had a great time at the party, as did the staff! We hope you enjoy these pictures of some of the fun we had and hope you all had a wonderful, fun filled and safe Halloween this weekend.
Yesterday we spent the morning exploring Linlithgow Palace – the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots. We were guided round by pupils from Linlithgow Primary School who told us all about different parts of the palace and were even dressed in costumes appropriate to that period in history.
Primary 1/2 have been very busy over the last few weeks learning lots of new sounds and developing their skills in numeracy.
Everyone has been working hard in Vowel House with their Literacy work. P1 have been learning to say, recognise, write and use the letters ‘m’, ‘c’, ‘s’ and ‘p’. P2’s have been learning about the ‘ee’ and ‘oo’ sound and another group in P2 have been introduced to the trickier ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ sounds. Well done everyone.
Number work has been very exciting. P1 have been working hard to learn numbers to 10 and have been doing lots of different activities with Mrs Gardinier.
P2’s have been working with numbers to 20 and have had to order these numbers forwards and backwards, carry out addition and subtraction sums and recognise these numbers in various games.
We have also been out collecting mini-beasts and recording the information we found in various ways, e.g. tally marks, dot patterns, pictures. We then used the information gathered to learn about and create our own bar graphs.
On Thursday we joined with all the other P3 classes in the Whitburn Cluster for a Multi Sports Festival. We went to Whitburn Community Centre, and we tried 5 different sports. In the hall we had Athletics, Basketball and Football. In 2 rooms upstairs we played parachute games and tried some dancing. It was a very busy, noisy afternoon. We all had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
On Wednesday afternoon, primary 5, 6 and 7 got together in the hall to take part in a Hockey House Challenge. P6/7 created the teams and organised the positions each team member should play in. The afternoon was a great success and a brilliant way to end our blocks of work on Hockey.
Wallace came first, Bruce and MacGregor were joint second and Stewart were fourth – all houses earned valuable house points to add to their totals so far.
This week in our Drama, we have been learning how to create ‘Freeze Frames’ using facial expression and actions to communicate an event. We had to work in groups to create a ‘Freeze Frame’ of an important event in the life of Mary Queen of Scots. Here are some of our ideas:
This Sunday, 11th October, is our sponsored walk day, teaming up with Greenrigg Priamry. From Stoneyburn we have 24 pupils signed up to walk across the bridge with a member of their family and we’re all really looking forward to it. an 11am start from the bridge car park on the south side- remember, you can wear your onesie or feel free to dress up if you’d like to! We’ll post pictures here of all the fun next week, after the big event!
We have been looking at what is involved in keeping ourselves healthy. We have talked about healthy and unhealthy foods and what we need to do to stay healthy. On Fridays we are encouraged to bring fruit to school for our playtime snack. We took this to heart and on Friday as part of our Health and Wellbeing program, we made fruit kebabs! It was great fun and we all definitely had more than one piece of fruit on this fruity Friday!!
Primary 6/7 have been learning about Scottish History through their Highland Clearances topic.
As part of their learning about living conditions, pupils worked in groups through a Critical Skills Challenge to make a replica “Blackhouse”. They had to discuss a list of criteria for the interior and exterior of the house and make decisions as a group. This helped to build on their talking and listening skills as well as maths and art skills.
Groups then designed a family (with at least 3 generations) to live in the house. The family were made into puppets which were used to act out a drama scene to show what life was like in 1800.

If you know a child in P6/7, ask them to explain why they are called “Blackhouses” and describe some of the main features.
