P1/2 Learning Round-Up!

Primary 1/2 has been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks, taking part in many different learning opportunities.  All the children have demonstrated a number of skills including good listening, being able to follow instructions and working as part of a team.  We hope you enjoy looking at these pictures…

We took part in a Destination Judo Taster Session.  It was brilliant fun!

Wedding of the Year

Wednesday 10th February was an exciting and memorable day in P1/2.  It was the day we celebrated the marriage of Carla and Michael!

Over the past few weeks, P1/2 have been busy learning about Christian Celebrations, in particular, church weddings.  They have been learning about the inside of a church and the customs and traditions surrounding a Christian wedding.  To end this mini-topic, the class decided to plan and hold a ‘mock wedding’ to showcase everything they had learned.  Lots of planning and preparation took place, just like a real wedding!

The wedding party had to be picked, outfits organised, order of ceremony written, and of course, a reception to end all receptions!

The children worked extremely hard with Miss Eunson and Mrs Lind to design and make the different props they would need such as bouquets, button holes and wedding rings.

The bride-to-be enjoyed her walk around the school, visiting different members of staff and classes before meeting her ‘dad’, ready to be walked down the aisle.

The ceremony took place ‘inside a church’ and the guests joined in well with their singing and encouragement.

Afterwards, photographs were taken ‘outside the church’ with all the wedding party and guests.  It was then time for the ‘first dance’ and a bit of a party.

IMG_0591 IMG_0595 IMG_0589IMG_0576IMG_0618

The cutting of the cake was also a highlight of the afternoon and the wedding party and guests enjoyed some beautiful wedding cake and drinks (of water!)

IMG_0597IMG_1090

Time for some more dancing and then the final song and dance of the wedding, ‘Loch Lomond’.

The children (and all the adults involved!) had a fantastic time and the whole afternoon certainly showcased their learning to a high standard.

Well done to everyone involved.  And congratulations to the happy couple! 🙂

A New Year in P1/2

Primary 1/2 have jumped straight back into their learning after the Christmas holidays.  We are beginning a brand new project all about ‘Pirates’ and have listened to a story called ‘The Pirates Next Door’.  We will be using this story to help us learn all about Pirates over the next term.

One of the characters from the story is called Jim Lad.  On Thursday, we all wrote a letter to Jim Lad to tell him about ourselves.

“I liked writing about what I like to play. I was really good at reading my story to the rest of the class.” – Michael

“I liked drawing my pictures in the plan for my letter.” – Aiden

“I enjoyed doing my plan and writing my letter.” – Darryl

We also learned about two different types of pirate ship.  We were able to label the different parts of the ship.  We are excited because we are going to be making our own model pirate ships.

In Maths, we have been learning about ‘Time’.  Primary 1 have been learning ‘o’clock’ times and Primary 2 have been learning how to tell o’clock and half past times on an analogue and digital clock.

“I have enjoyed learning about half past” – Jack

“I enjoyed learning about digital clocks” – Michael

“I liked playing the games about Time because they help us learn more about Time” – Alesha

“I liked playing the Class Clock game.  Mrs Sibbald was trying to beat us but she didn’t and we won all the points” – Alex

“I liked learning about o’clock times” – Jordan

“I liked learning about o’clock and half past times on an analogue and digital clock” – Aiden

We are also very lucky this term to have two new people working in our class.  Mrs Lind and Miss Eunson have been helping us with our learning.

Learning in P1/2

We have had a very busy week in Primary 1/2.  We have started getting ready for our Christmas Fayre and have been working hard to learn our parts for the Christmas Nativity Show. Here’s what the children have enjoyed this week…

“I have enjoyed doing the finger printing for our Christmas Cards that we’re making.” – Jaymee-Leigh

“I have enjoyed doing the play. I’m looking forward to the adults coming to watch us.” – Alex

“I liked making the sweeties for our display with Mr Henry” – Alesha

“I’ve done my maths very good.  I’ve learned all the ways to make 10 and I can say them very fast.” – Darryl

“I have enjoyed the codebreakers in Vowel House. I know my ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ sounds.” – Carla

“I have been learning my ‘oa’ and ‘ai’ sounds in Vowel House.” – Michael

“I have finished all my codebreakers in Vowel House and know my sounds really well.” – Jack

“I have been learning lots of new sounds this week.” – Jordan

“I thought about things I do well in my writing and what I need to work on.” – Jay

P1/2 Literacy and Numeracy

Primary 1/2 have been very busy over the last few weeks learning lots of new sounds and developing their skills in numeracy.

Everyone has been working hard in Vowel House with their Literacy work.  P1 have been learning to say, recognise, write and use the letters ‘m’, ‘c’, ‘s’ and ‘p’.  P2’s have been learning about the ‘ee’ and ‘oo’ sound and another group in P2 have been introduced to the trickier ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ sounds.  Well done everyone.

Number work has been very exciting.  P1 have been working hard to learn numbers to 10 and have been doing lots of different activities with Mrs Gardinier.

P2’s have been working with numbers to 20 and have had to order these numbers forwards and backwards, carry out addition and subtraction sums and recognise these numbers in various games.

IMG_0657IMG_0698 IMG_0695IMG_0692IMG_0691

We have also been out collecting mini-beasts and recording the information we found in various ways, e.g. tally marks, dot patterns, pictures.  We then used the information gathered to learn about and create our own bar graphs.

Our busy week

At the beginning of the week we learned about the different parts of a castle.  We learned about towers, battlements, turrets, drawbridges, moats and the portcullis.  We built and drew castles and Carla did a mini-project at home about her visit to Niddry Castle.  She brought in lots of photographs and told us all about them.

Later on in the week, we wrote a personal story about ‘When I was little’.  We had to think back to when we were a baby and think of something we did then that we don’t do now.  We had some very funny stories.  We had stories about nappies, dummies and rubber ducks in the bath!

Michael also brought in a magnifying glass for his news time.  He told us all about it and what it can be used for.  We decided we would like to go outside and go ‘mini-beast hunting’.  We found lots of insects including earwigs, ladybirds, worms and beetles.  They looked much bigger when we looked at them through the magnifying glass.

A Busy Week in P1/2

This week a lady visited us from the SSPCA.  She had brought a bag full of equipment that she uses to save and rescue animals in need.  Some of us were lucky enough to try on some of her equipment.

IMG_0571

Alesha wore a reflective jacket but we were told that the SSPCA Officers would never wear this jacket in a field of sheep or cows as the animals would be really scared.  Daniel had a go of a Seal Bag.  This bag would be put over a seal to keep it calm and then it would be carried in the bag to the SSPCA van.  There are holes in the bag for the seal to breathe.

IMG_0573

Darryl was lucky enough to wear the climbing equipment.  This equipment would be used if the SSPCA Officers had to climb to rescue an animal from a tree or cliff.  Darryl really wanted to climb out the window and over the school roof but he wasn’t allowed!

IMG_0577

Aiden was our Badger Catcher for the morning.  He had to use a special piece of equipment to catch the badger around its neck and then tighten it so it wouldn’t escape.  The badger was very fast but it couldn’t escape ‘Aiden the Badger Catcher’.

Hide and Tell Box

IMG_0586

Daniel put a really interesting object in the Hide and Tell Box this week and was able to give us some clues about it.  Lots of good questions were asked in class to try and find out more information about the object and Darryl was the person who guessed it correctly.  Well done Daniel and Darryl.

News from the P1/2 Superstars

Primary 1/2 have had a fantastic week getting to know each other and making some brand new friends.  Primary 2 pupils have worked very hard to help the new Primary 1s settle into class.

Primary 1 pupils enjoyed a lunch at school with their parents on Wednesday and they all did really well.  Everyone is looking forward to seeing the P1s in for full days next week.
