Parents\/carers should ensure that their school\/nursery has up to date contact information.<\/p>\n<div class=\"grid grid--2col grid--widthside\">\n<div class=\"grid__cell grid__cell--cols1\">\n<div class=\"grid__cellwrap\">\n<div class=\"maincontent\">\n<div class=\"a-body a-body--default\">\n<p>In addition changes will be notified via\u00a0<a class=\"a_body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westlothian.gov.uk\/schoolclosures\">the School Closures page<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"a_body__link a_body__link--external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/westlothiancouncil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"a_body__link a_body__link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lovewestlothian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and local media.<\/p>\n<h3>School closures<\/h3>\n<p>The Head Teacher has responsibility for undertaking a risk assessment in the event of severe weather or building difficulties.\u00a0 There are several factors which may impact on this decision including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the building itself and whether there is water and power<\/li>\n<li>access to the school and decisions of school transport operators<\/li>\n<li>whether there are enough staff available to ensure that the school can open safely<\/li>\n<li>whether it is safe to send children home during severe weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Head Teacher takes the decision to close a school to pupils in consultation with a member of the senior management team in Education Services.<\/p>\n<h3>Travelling to school<\/h3>\n<p>In extreme weather conditions such as snow, parents\/carers should carry out a risk assessment as to whether they\u00a0consider it safe for their child to travel or walk to school. Parents\/carers should then inform the school of their decision at the earliest opportunity.<\/p>\n<h5>School Transport procedures\u00a0in the event of\u00a0<strong>adverse weather<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>During adverse weather conditions school transport operators have been\u00a0instructed that if a child is picked up on route and news reaches the driver\u00a0that the school is closed, the driver will proceed to the school with the child\u00a0as planned.<\/p>\n<p>Under no circumstances will the driver return to the pick\u00a0up point\u00a0until such time as the parents have been informed of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>It is vitally important that parents are aware that transport may not operate\u00a0at all in adverse weather conditions and parents must have a contingency\u00a0plan should the bus not arrive at the pick up point.\u00a0Please ensure\u00a0that your child\/children are aware of these guidelines and\u00a0what to do if the bus does not arrive for any reason as normal.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any queries about the school transport procedure please contact Public Transport either by telephone: 01506 280000 or email:\u00a0<a class=\"a_body__link\" href=\"mailto:customer.service@westlothian.gov.uk\">customer.service@westlothian.gov.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>GLOW<\/h3>\n<p>All West Lothian pupils have access to the education community GLOW.\u00a0 Pupils who can access a computer at home, at libraries or Community Centres, can access study material via GLOW.\u00a0 The private website has study material and activities.<\/p>\n<p>West Lothian Council GLOW allows teachers and pupils to communicate over the internet in a safe and secure way. Teachers can post work and lessons for pupils. Pupils can submit completed work. Features include safe and secure &#8216;chat rooms&#8217; where teachers can answer pupil questions, and where pupils can help each other out and share learning experiences.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Norovirus (Winter Vomiting Disease)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A number of schools across Lothian have reported an increase in pupils with vomiting and\/or diarrhoea.\u00a0 The symptoms are suggestive of viral gastroenteritis (also known as norovirus or winter vomiting disease) which is known to be currently circulating in the community.\u00a0 It is usually a short lived self-limiting illness from which children and adults recover quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Further information about norovirus and its prevention can be found on the\u00a0<a class=\"a_body__link a_body__link--external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/infections-and-poisoning\/norovirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS Inform Norovirus Information Webpage<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>To minimise the likelihood of developing norovirus we recommend:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your child develops vomiting and\/or diarrhoea please ensure they remain off school until they have been\u00a0<strong>symptom free for at least 48 hours<\/strong>.\u00a0 This advice applies at all times.\u00a0 So for instance\u00a0<strong>if your child becomes unwell over the weekend they should not attend school on Monday\u00a0<\/strong>even if by then they feel well.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that all members of your family wash their hands frequently using warm water and liquid soap, especially after using the toilet and before eating or preparing food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The council have uploaded their latest Winter Ready information to our school website, under the Parent Zone:\u00a0https:\/\/stnicholasprimary.westlothian.org.uk\/article\/5923\/Winter-Ready-for-Schools &nbsp; Winter Ready 2018: In the event of closures schools will contact parents\/carers in the normal way via Groupcall.
