As part of our Victorians topic, we visited Scotland Street School and Museum to learn about school in the past. We had so much fun looking at classrooms as they used to be and finding out about the history of the school. The best part of our day, however, had to be when we were transformed into Victorian school children!
We had to change into Victorian school uniforms, the girls wearing a long white pinafore and the boys a black waistcoat, white collar and black tie. Have a look at us……
Our teacher was a man named Mr Valentine, and he was very scary! He had on a long black cloak and used a big loud voice! He called us by our surnames or just as “Boy” or “Girl”, just like the teachers in Victorian times.
We had to be tested on our tables, our arithmetic, our handwriting and our spelling! We used slates to write on and also had a go at using the pens which had to dipped into inkwells on the desks.
We found out that you weren’t allowed to be left handed in Victorian times, and that teachers were allowed to hit you with the “belt” or the “strap” or the “cane” and could even throw a board duster at you if they were angry!
We had an amazing time on our trip, and it really brought our topic to life!
