{"id":3570,"date":"2020-11-24T09:28:15","date_gmt":"2020-11-24T09:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/wl\/ILandEblog\/?p=3570"},"modified":"2020-11-24T13:26:57","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T13:26:57","slug":"3570","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/wl\/ILandEblog\/2020\/11\/24\/3570\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Guidance from <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Child Accident Prevention Trust<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Watch out for dangerous toys this Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lots of us will be doing our shopping online this Christmas thanks to Covid-19 restrictions and shop closures.<\/p>\n<p>Buying presents online &#8211; especially children\u2019s toys &#8211; can also be a great way to discover some bargains and save money.<\/p>\n<p>However, the number of dangerous toys sold online to unsuspecting families is on the increase &#8211; so it\u2019s good to be aware when buying presents this year.<\/p>\n<p>For example, did you know that if you buy a toy from a third party seller via one of the well-known online marketplaces, it might not meet UK safety standards?<\/p>\n<p>Online marketplaces are simply offering a shop window to sellers around the world and aren\u2019t legally required to check if a toy is safe before allowing it to be sold.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these toys may be dangerous and, as a result, could cause serious injuries to children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dangers can include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Magnets so strong they can burn through the gut if swallowed<\/li>\n<li>Long cords which can strangle a child<\/li>\n<li>Dangerous levels of chemicals<\/li>\n<li>Small parts that can choke or suffocate<\/li>\n<li>Easy access to button batteries that can get stuck in a child\u2019s food pipe, cause internal bleeding and even death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Child Accident Prevention Trust is sharing tips to help everyone buy toys safely this Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>If you are able to, they suggest parents <strong>buy direct <\/strong>via the websites of well-known brand names.<\/p>\n<p>Or if you\u2019re buying from an online marketplace, <strong>enter a reputable brand name <\/strong>when you search for the toy you want to be sure it\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, toys aren\u2019t checked for safety before they\u2019re sold by an online marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is &#8211; it costs manufacturers money to make toys safe.
