Comments Off on Fire fighters

This week in Inveralmond we had a visit from Livingston Fire Station.  The children enjoyed a seat in the fire engine and having a turn with the hose.

We have been celebrating Burns Day and Chinese New Year.  The children have tasted a variety of foods, experimented with Chinese writing and we have made tartan using paint and weaving paper.  We also made our own dragon

The children also made a car wash in the garden and worked together to wash the bikes.

We have had a fabulous week at Ladywell Nursery School.  The children received a visit from West Lothian Council waste services team where they carried out different activities with the children.  One activity was looking at bean bags with a picture e.g. toothpaste. The children had to decide what colour of bin it went in and then post it into the correct bin. The children were also developing their fine motor skills when using the grabber to pick up the rubbish and recycle it into the correct coloured bins.

The children have also been developing their fine motor skills further through threading beards to make jewellery. They were very proud to show them off afterwards and were excited to take them home.

They have been also been using construction to make models i.e. huge diamonds, space rockets and houses.  They have also enjoyed rolling cars down the wooden planks.

The children have shown a great interest and used their imagination to make a volcano from paper mache. We looked on the laptop to discover how volcanoes happen and spoke about how hot lava is.  Some children also role-played as a volcano eruption!

The children had a great time outside when they made kites after a child discovered that their jacket flapped in the wind just like a kite flapping in the air.  They flew their kite then they made their own kites in the art area where they were developing their fine motor skills and sharing their ideas.

Well done boys and girls!

Comments Off on Patterns and Rhyming

The children have been roleplaying firefighters this week.  Using small world toys indoors and using their imaginations in the garden.  We have therefore organised a visit from Livingston Fire Brigade who aim to come to our Nursery on Wednesday with the fire engine.

We have been focussing on rhyme and pattern this week.  Providing lots of different activities to support this.

Comments Off on Happy New Year 2020

Happy New Year to all our families.  We hope you had a great time over the holidays and we are delighted to see you all back.

The children are still interested in playing with babies and are chatting about how we look after babies.

Congratulations to Cason and his family on the birth of their baby girl.

We have also been learning about dark and light and the children have been exploring the garden with the torches in the afternoon as darkness falls.  Which has been great fun.

We are looking for any electrical equipment such as radios, toasters etc which we can allow the children to take apart with tools at our supervised tinker station.

Box Clever

For the next few weeks the words for Box Clever are going to be taken from traditional tales.

These stories can be read to children from books but are often well enough known to be told without a book allowing the words to be used with and by children and staff throughout the nursery and at home too.

The children enjoy joining in with the the repeated phrases e.g.’Who’s been eating my porridge?’,’Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man!’ or,’I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!’. The experience of the rhyme and rhythm in the phrases is an important skill for future literacy development.

Children are soon able to retell the stories themselves further developing their use of language, having fun with language and using their imaginations as they play with the characters  developing their own story lines.
