Ladywell Nursery School

Maths Though Story

Books that explore an aspect of mathematics are chosen and displayed in the nursery playrooms.

Alongside the book there will be some resources that support the mathematical concept of the book.

For the next two weeks our maths through story book will be ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ developing children’s language of measurement.

Maths Through Story

Books that explore an aspect of mathematics are chosen and displayed in the nursery playrooms.

Alongside the book there will be some resources that support the mathematical concept of the book. So, we might put out numerals from 1-10 to be ordered correctly, little people to represent the characters in the story, safari animals to count and sort, items of different sizes.

We have enjoyed the following three stories recently.

This week at Ladywell nursery the children were excited to discover that the caterpillars had turned into butterflies and they really enjoyed releasing them into the garden.  The children were very gentle when taking turns to hold them and have done a great job monitoring the caterpillars daily to see if they had turned into butterflies.  They had also named all of the caterpillars too.  Well done everyone!

This week the children had a great time creating their own lighthouses just like the lighthouse in the story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ . Take a look and see…

Story and rhyme time

The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch is being enjoyed by the pre school children in both settings and themes in the story being explored through the floorbooks in each place.

Some children have spent time thinking about the things they enjoy eating for lunch and being shown the school lunch menu discussing which tray they would like to choose, others have been creating zip wires in the garden and finding things to hook on and move from place to place.

Great how a story can provide so many interesting things to think about!

The younger children in each setting have been enjoying interactive stories like Dear Zoo and stories about things of interest like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Aaaargh Spider!

We are continuing to sing Five Little Peas

Sharing some news from the Scottish Book Trust!

Getting back to Bookbug Sessions

We are delighted that Scottish Government Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions are starting to ease and Bookbug Sessions are able to resume. While Sessions will look a bit different, they are still a fun, free, accessible activity for mums, dads and carers to enjoy with their little ones.

Go to their website where you can find demonstration videos of what to expect when attending a bookbug session indoors or out.

https://www.scottishbooktrust.com

Bookbug finger puppets used within the films will be available to families in July 2021 as part of our upcoming Bookbug Summer of Play campaign. These puppets require adult supervision for babies under 12 months.

The following link will take you to the west Lothian Bookbug facebook page telling you of local events and offering on line songs , stories and rhymes

This week in Ladywell nursery the children have been very busy caring for our new caterpillars and learning all about how they turn into butterflies. Once they have turned into butterflies the children will release them in to the garden.

Week beginning June 7th 2021

Story time

The preschool children at both Inveralmond Early Years  and Ladywell will be listening to The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage for the next 2-3 weeks.

Song time

Five Little Peas

Five little peas in a pea pod pressed,

One grew, two grew,

So did all the rest.

They grew and grew and did not stop,

Until one day the pod went,

POP!

As with many traditional rhymes the words can vary from one version to another. It doesn’t really matter, enjoy singing it the way you know it!

Comments Off on Summer Fun

This week in Inveralmond EYC we have been enjoying the sunshine.  In the garden some children have worked hard together to make challenging assault courses.  There has been lots of co-operation and displays of good gross motor skills when balancing, climbing and jumping

In our role play area we have set up a school.  The children are enjoying imaginative play and sharing their thoughts and feelings about going to school with adults and their friends.  We have been doing lots of work on letters, numbers, rhyme and clapping syllables.  To support with this you could practice at home and upload any photos or videos to your child’s learning journal.

The dinosaur land has also been popular
