Children and young people are learning in a variety of different settings. We thought it would be helpful to highlight the following resource from the National e-Learning Offer which might provide useful support.

Early level learners can access Dug’s Discovery Den which offers activities and learning discoveries as we move through the seasons of the year.

The story for the week beginning September 13th is

Sylvia and Bird by Catherine Rayner

The boost words are

search      lonely      gaze      tumble

The children continue to be interested in learning about the time, the days of the week, the weather and seasons.  We have been doing various activities around this.

We have also taken part in various activities to help us to learn about shape and pattern.

Lots of children enjoyed hand printing in the garden some children comparing the size of their hands and counting their fingers.  Others enjoying exploring the texture and using lots of vocabulary to describe how the paint feels.

Ladywell Nursery children have been busy digging up our potato plants that we planted before the summer. The children were so surprised to find lots of potatoes in the ground and engaged well in discussions about how they grow and what they need to grow. We decided to use the potatoes in different areas of the nursery to demonstrate different ways we can use them.

Some children were involved with washing and preparing the potatoes for cooking and enjoyed tasting them at snack time. To help develop our numeracy skills the children had the opportunity to use the potatoes for sorting by size, colour and shape. We have also been learning to describe the potatoes using mathematical language and forward and backwards sequencing. In the art area some children had the opportunity to use the potatoes for printing to help support their creative skills. The potatoes were also used in our home corner for children to use during role play.  We even sang some songs about potatoes to help develop children’s coordination skills and rhythm.

Rhyme Time

Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,

All the King’s horses and

All the King’s men,

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

At nursery children like to sit on a cushion on the floor pretending to be Humpty and topple off(safely, of course) on the word ‘fall’. They must wait for the word though, no early toppling!!

Great for developing attention and listening skills, especially if you delay singing ‘fall’.

You can also make a ‘mistake’ whilst reciting the rhyme( e.g. Humpty Dumpty sat on a horse)to see if they notice and  can provide the correct word. Children find this quite funny and it results in some great shared language fun.

Nursery WordBoost

Nursery WordBoost is an approach designed to develop the vocabulary of children at nursery through the sharing of books in which there are four highlighted ‘boost’ words. These words are clearly identified to children, staff and parents with the hope that everyone uses the words as much as possible and they become part of the child’s vocabulary.

The book that we will be reading for a week from September 6th is

The boost words are

Listen to the story and see if you notice the boost words.

Try and use the boost words whenever you and in different contexts so that your child develops a deep understanding of the word and when it can be used. We will be doing the same in the nurseries.

You can further support your children by telling them what the words mean.

astonished……very surprised

brave………..doing something dangerous or scary even if you are scared.

creature…….animals or insects, they can be real or pretend

creep…..moving slowly and quietly

Sunny smiles!

Over the next few days your child will bring a ‘sunny smile’!

As part of developing  the health and wellbeing of the children we regularly discuss their feelings . To further support this we would be grateful if you could complete the ‘sunny smile’ with your child. Give the centre of the sunshine a big smiley face and then write all the things that make them smile in each ray of the sun. On return we will talk with the children about the things that make them smile and add  the completed  sunshine to our floor book.

It is lovely to be welcoming new children into Inveralmond Early Years Centre.  We have been enjoying  being in the garden this week.  The children have continued to enjoy playing with the dinosaurs, so we have created our very own Jurassic World to allow the children to become involved in role play inventing situations and coo-operating with each other.

Some children have  worked hard experimenting with the water and guttering.  Lots of team work to make the water flow faster and slower.
