Inappropriate language

One or two parents/carers have been expressing concerns about their children repeating inappropriate/swear words.

I had a quick look on line and found a website that has some helpful guidance

https://raisingchildren.net.au/preschoolers/behaviour/common-concerns/swearing-preschoolers

The key points are:

  • Young children might swear to get attention, express frustration, try out words, or copy other people.
  • It’s often best to ignore swearing in toddlers and preschoolers.
  • When your child is old enough to understand, you can explain why swearing isn’t OK.
  • Family rules can help you discourage swearing and encourage respectful language.

However if you copy and paste the link it will take you to their website where they explore in greater depth why children may be swearing and how to respond in a clear, supportive manner.

In nursery we work hard to support children as they learn what is appropriate behaviour. We refer to our values of respect, kindness and happiness to help with this.
