Primary 1, week 6!

Can you believe we have been Primary ones for 6 weeks already?! How time flies, when you are having fun and learning!

Here is a snapshot of what we have been doing and learning this week, all through play!

What a busy week!

Reflective Reading – Short read

This morning we worked in trio’s, each person had their own job. We chose the roles in our own groups based on our strengths. The choices were Recorder, Reader and Manager. We had to read every word in the passage in order to find and replace the silly words with sensible words. Abby found it particularly funny as her prior knowledge meant she knew that Polar Bears did not, in fact, eat crisps! We discussed the skills needed to complete this task and shared our answers at the end.

Author visit from Stuart Reid

Yesterday we had a visit from Scottish author Stuart Reid.  He became an author at 42 after realising that he wasn’t happy in his job. He showed us the books he has written and read some extracts from them We got to act the parts out to make the stories really come to life. We were given the opportunity to buy a signed copy of the books.

What P1 have been up to…

We have been using the blocks to make a stage and have been dancing to different songs. We enjoyed copying what dance moves our friends were doing.

We learned the p sound and practised in lots of ways. Now we know m, c, s and p!

We have been learning and practising our numbers 1-5 in lots of ways.

We have been learning about 2D shapes and can talk about their properties. We practised drawing and identify the shapes and even had a shape hunt!

We have been spending a lot of time outside. We have been investigating the natural world by observing and digging. James found a feather and he thinks it could have been from a black bird. Maija-Storme was interested in why the grass was a different colour where the tyres had been sitting. Siena said she was digging for dinosaur fossils!

We have also been learning about Strangers and the importance of staying safe. We spoke about safer strangers – people we can go to for help if we get lost. These are people who wear uniforms and have a name badge, like the emergency services or shop workers.

Please further discuss this with your child at home and ensure they would know what to do in different situations involving strangers.

Primary 1 open evening

Thank you to all who attended our open evening tonight. I hope you enjoyed seeing how our classroom is now set up since we have started a more play based approach and that it gave you a better understanding to how your child is learning in Primary one.

For those who could not attend, please see some of our pictures and a PowerPoint about the importance of Outdoor Learning.

Week 3 in primary 1

What a busy week of learning we have had!

On Monday, we had a visit from the Osiligi Maasai Warriors!

We also learned the ‘m’ sound, and all about the number 1. Lots of us already knew the number 1, so we practised writing it.

Later in the week, we learned the ‘c’ sound and number 2. We found that this was a little bit trickier to write than the number 1, but we had great fun practising in different ways.

We have been having lots of discussions around the topic ‘All About Me’ in class. We have spoken about what makes us special, what makes a good friend, our family and why it is important to be a good listener.

We have also been learning about and exploring lots of different 2D shapes.
