West Lothian Foodbank collection

Over the last 3 weeks we have been collecting food for the West Lothian Foodbank.

We have collected food for people who are struggling to buy and get hold of food.

We had to bring food that can stay in your cupboard and don’t go out of date until next year.

The winning house was Baillee who collected the most food and won 500 house points. Kelly were second with 250 house points and Dardenelles with 125 house points.

We’re very proud of the amount of food we’ve collected especially as we’re not a big school.

P7/6 build a bone bridge challenge

Today we had a challenge to build a bridge of bones. Well actually they weren’t real bones but it was still a challenge. This was a STEM challenge so we had to work in groups and our designs had to meet certain criteria and constraints. We all found different ways to build our bridges and apart from one group who didn’t achieve it in th time limit, we all had a bridge. The bridges had to hover at least 2cm off the surface and be at least 2cm wide. The bridge had to balance a 1p coin without it falling though. We were only allowed to use our supply of pipe cleaners, cotton buds (bones) and lolly sticks. We really enjoyed this task and Miss Tuke was really impressed by our group work and ideas.

Term 1 highlights p7/6

What a fantastic first term we have had in Primary 7/6

  • Literacy: poetry for Mrs Denholm, recipe writing and fictional stories based on our scientist creation. Our free writing for homework has shown lots of super ideas and just how creative you all are.
  • Maths: place value, multiplying, rounding and decimals. We looked at where to find real evidence of maths so to realise why and where we will use the skills we learn.
  • expressive arts: we have been working with our drama and music teachers learning new skills. We have been painting, making collages, perspective drawings, painting skills and some art through our science.
  • working with others: we have been great Primary 1 buddies, walking to the harvest assembly, playing outside with buddies and most recently we taught primary 2 how to make their own 3D dinosaurs.
  • keeping healthy: we have been bucket filling and learning how to have a growth mindset. We have been very active with Mrs Crow and Scott Woodhouse has been teaching us Futsal. We have also been squeezing in a few daily miles. Well done to our boys for competing in this years cross country. Well done also to the many boys and girls in the class who have been away representing the school in the Football, Netball and Handball teams.

Harvest Celebrations

Yesterday, we had our first school visit to the church! It was quite a far walk, but our P6/7 buddies helped us get there safely.

Walking to the church safely

Our buddies showed us how to sit smartly in a church – for some of us it was the first time we had ever been in a church!

We listened carefully to the P5/6 class assembly about harvest and stood up to join in with the songs. We then listened to the Minister talk about what harvest time is important.

We were very lucky to be given some juice and a biscuit at the end!

P2 & P7 create dinosaurs

P2 worked with the P7 children to make dinosaurs using different skills. The P7 children gave us instructions on how to make the dinosaurs. We worked together, we followed instructions and we used good listening skills to make this a success.

Aaron said, ‘it was fun working with a buddy’. Max said, ‘I loved making dinosaurs with Harris and Matthew.  Kimberley said, ‘I like using my cutting skills.’ MacKenzie said, ‘I liked cutting and sticking’. McKenzie said, ‘I like working with my buddy.’ Tyler said, ‘I liked gluing.’

P5-7 Food Careers Event

On Tuesday 4th October all pupils from P5-7 attended a Food Careers Event being held in Livingston. The event had lots of stalls from different food industries for the pupils to visit. Some stalls shared information about different companies and possible careers. Some stalls gave pupils the opportunity to try to identify foods, smell coffee beans or have a shot at some Silver Service. The favourite stalls were definitely the ones where pupils got to try some food. There was a stall that encouraged healthy eating by making smoothies but to blend the smoothie they had to pedal on a bike. Another stall showed them how to make some fancy white chocolate and a special jelly which all tasted lovely! The event was a great way for pupils to see the range of careers out there linked to the food industry from farmers, butchers, chemists (flavourings), nutritionists (humans and animals), web designers and so much more.

P7 Cross-Country Team

On Wednesday 5th October a team of seven P7 boys headed to Dechmont Law in Livingston. They were joining other pupils from across the council to compete in a cross-country event. The team consisted of Harris, Jason, Rafael, John, Noah, Scott and Adam. They had to run a 1.1km course that involved flat and hilly ground. The boys did the school proud and represented Greenrigg well.

A big thank you!

FUN FOOTBALL NIGHT

A huge thanks to Sibbalds for the donation of our superb trophy and medals for our football fun night . Also to all our parents, old and new, who came and supported our  night at Greenrigg  park and played football.

We all had an amazing time and the final was a huge success between the oldies and the school football club, who won the trophy . This is on display in our cabinet at Mrs Millar’s office .

What a superb community spirit we have! With lots of support from family’s donations, we have been able to buy our football club new strips. This could not be possible without the help of Mr W Swan and our parents.  Our strips are ordered and with the money we had left over we  bought lots of super toys for us in the playground. We also bought 2 new sets of goals, football socks, balls, whistles, a football bag, bicycle helmets for our scooters and a brilliant air pump . We will post pictures off our new strip when it arrives.
