P5 Den building

Yesterday we headed down to the local woodlands to complete a STEM challenge.

We had to imagine we were in the Rainforest. We needed to build a shelter to keep us dry. Miss Cooke told us that it had to be at least a metre tall, everyone in the group could fit under it as well as keep us dry.

We used different materials that we found to build our frames and make it rain proof. Some of us found some really big sticks to use.

We discussed what skills we had used once we were back at school. We all agreed that we had used our Maths skills to estimate how tall our shelter was as well as ensuring materials we used weren’t too heavy. We also used Science to work out which materials would be better to keep us dry.

We had a great afternoon. We hope we get to go back and do more STEM challenges.

P5/4 read and relax.

Today we decided to head outside and have some “r n r” – read and relax.

Everyday we read a book of our choice for 15 minutes.

“I feel relaxed and ready to learn more after read and relax” – Elle

”I like finding new words in my book to share with the class” – Lewis

You can read and relax anywhere. I wonder where we’ll be reading next.

P4 waste minimisers

Today we went to Stoneyburn for our last transition for this session.

We continued to look at waste minimisation. We started by watching some clips from Newsround that showed us that flytipping is on the rise. We discussed why we thought people dumped their waste and what affects it has on the environment.

We then went out into the school grounds to see how much waste there was. There was a lot of litter around the woodlands. We couldn’t believe that we found bricks, wooden slats and even glass bottles that people had dumped there.

In the afternoon we formed teams and had to design a poster or PowerPoint to persuade people not to dump their waste but to use bins or recycle â™» them.

We had a fantastic time and hope we get to join up with the primary 4s from stoneyburn again soon.

Orienteering.

Yesterday we went orienteering at Polkemmet country park. P5 from Miss Parks class came too.

First we had a picnic in the park as it was a nice sunny day then had some time to play.

We met Hannah, a park ranger, who told use what orienteering was.

“Orienteering is when you read maos and have to find letters and numbers ” – Jaxon

“Its a bit like a giant treasure hunt” – Lewis.

We split into teams had to follow a route on a map using red and green markers. It was quite easy to follow.

Then Hannah showed us how to use a compass and read an OS map.

“The red arrow on a compass always shows North” – Ross

” All maps have arrows to show North” – Lucy

Once we could read the map we were sent off around the park to find our markers and record on our map.

We had a fab time and would love to go back.

Stem week in P5/4

Today is the first day of British Science week. We have been given the topic to learn about the moon.

First we wanted to find out different things about the moon.

Jaxon – why do people live on the earth instead of the moon?

Adam – why did people go to the moon?

Kaitlin – why do people not live on the moon?

Lucy – why do some people think the moon is made of cheese?

We used different books and the internet to find out our answers. We showed our answers as a poster.

We found out that Mrs Kerr and Deacon know lots about space and the moon.

This afternoon we learnt about the first man on the moon.

Lewis – 3 men went to the moon in July 1969.

Natalie – They went to the moon to study the rocks and dust.

Ellie – Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon.

We cant wait to learn more about the Moon.

Reusing our junk

Today Primary 4 from Stoneyburn came to join us for our transition topic. We continued to learn about waste management.

We read a story called “Michael recycle”. We found that it’s important to keep a check on the amount of waste we use.

We decided to resume our junk and make it useful again.

We were set the challenge to make a toy with a moving part. We had to make sure it was realistic and eye catching. We had to use at least 3 materials.

We loved making different toys. Some of us made robots, some vehicles and we even had a board game.

We cant wait till next time to get together.

P5/4 group writing

Today we have been learning how to work in a group and write a group story.

First we chose our picture that we were going to write about. We used this to help us plan. We had to describe the picture using adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverbs. We also choose a title.

Then we wrote our starting sentence. It had to hook the reader in. We then each suggested a sentence to continue our story.

Today was our first draft and next week we are going to edit and fix our mistakes, we found that it didn’t always make sense.

Being systematic

In Maths we have been learning how to be systematic when solving problems.

“Being systematic is working in order to find all the answers” – Jaxon

We were set the the challenge to find out how many ways there were to make a tower of 5 using 2 colours.

It was very tricky to find all the answers and make sure we worked in order. We used the cubes to help us see the pattern.

“One colour can move down the tower until it’s at the bottom.” – Aiden

“Once you have got to the bottom you change one colour and start again” – Kaitlin.

We didn’t find all the solutions but we loved the challenge.
