Transition to Primary 1

The preschool children have had a busy week, meeting their Primary 6 and Primary 1 buddies.  On Thursday the preschoolers  spent some time in Primary 1 getting to know their new buddies and learning about inventions.

We will be visiting Primary 1 on a Thursday to learn even more about inventions.

Tadpoles Tales

Today the afternoon children released the tadpoles back into the wild.

The children found the frogspawn in a big muddy puddle, whilst on a woodland walk last Monday.  We collected some and brought it back to nursery.

In the nursery, the children watched the tadpoles hatch and begin to grow. We noticed that the tadpoles were eating the jelly eggs they had hatched from. Once they had eaten it all, we began to feed them cucumber.

The tadpoles were beginning to change. Their tails were becoming longer and thinner.  Their heads were growing and we could see their mouths forming.  They were transforming into froglets.

As the nursery was going to be closed for the Easter break, the children agreed that they should be released back into the pond, where they would be safe and have food to eat.  The children from the afternoon session, took the tadpoles back to the pond today and set them free.

The children watched as the tadpoles swam into the pond grass and are hoping to see some frogs the next time we visit the woods.

What’s In The Box?

What Is ‘What’s In The Box?’

‘What’s In The Box?’ aims to help children learn new vocabulary and to ‘store’ it, so that they can use it. The children are encouraged to learn new words by naming, describing, actioning and sequencing the objects that they choose from the box.

Naming – what are the parts of the object called?

Describing – how does it look, feel? What colour is it? Is it wet/dry?

Actioning – what does it do? Cook, roll, climb, fold, etc

Sequencing – can you tell a story with it? “

At home, parents/carers can encourage children by naming and describing objects, toys, places and pets. You can also encourage children to describe what they see, hear, taste and feel.

When playing, you can use action words to talk about what the toy or child is doing – climbing, running, drawing, swimming, etc.

Use ‘first … and then … “ to encourage your child to talk about what you are doing.

Eg “oh look! First mummy bathed the baby and then she ?…. “ letting the child finish the sentence is a good way of getting your child to join in and become more confident when using new words.

World Book Day 2019

For World Book Day the nursery children explored the story “The Gigantic Turnip” and made a fabulous collage to celebrate the story.

The children worked really hard and made characters from the story by drawing around each other and decorating paper plates to represent the farm animals who helped to pull the gigantic  turnip out.

I am sure you will agree that their collage is fantastic.

We would also like to thank all the parents and carers who joined us in the hall for our World Book Day Celebrations. You helped to make the event a fun and memorable experience for the children.

Please remember, you can share the stories you explore at home, or any other learning or accomplishments, on your child’s Learners Journal. We love to celebrate their achievements with you.

PEEP update

The nursery PEEP group is the perfect place for you and your child to spend some time together having fun, meeting new friends and learning new fun things to do together.

Sessions run every Wednesday and are open to all children attending the nursery.  Parents are free to attend either session with their child. Younger brothers and sisters are welcome to come too.

Current session times are 10.15 – 11.00  and 2.30 – 3.15.

This term we have had lots of fun with arts and crafts.  We would love for you to join us.  For further information, please speak to a member of the nursery staff.

Burns Supper

The children recently celebrated Burns Day with their very own Burns Supper.  As part of our Scottish celebrations, the children learned to sing some Scottish songs, explored tartan, the Loch Ness Monster and the Bagpipes.

Welcome Back

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all our nursery children and their families.  We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are excited to be back at nursery.

Our first Woodland Walk of the year took place on Monday.  The children really enjoyed being out in the fresh air and exploring the woodland with their friends.

There were lots of muddy puddles to explore, and these provided great opportunities to learn.  We learned about cause and effect when we found out that the puddles become smaller when you make big splashes, and that the harder you jump, the higher the water splashes.  Jumping in muddy puddles is also amazing fun, as you will see from the video link at the bottom of the page.

We also learned some new words when we got stuck in the mud. “Squelchy”, “sticky”, “swampy”and “gooey” were some of our favourites.

The Woodland Walks will take place every Monday and we ask that you ensure your child is dressed appropriately.  If you would like to join us, please speak to a member of staff.

Merry Christmas

The nursery staff would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

The children had a ball at the Christmas Party and, with your help, our festive fundraisers have helped to replenish our nursery funds.

Thank you for all the support you give to the children and the nursery. It is very much appreciated and really makes a difference to the children’s nursery experience.

We will see you all on Monday 7th January, 2019.

Christmas Singalong Superstars

Congratulations to all the nursery boys and girls on their fantastic performances today.  I am sure you will agree they are all amazing and truly deserved their star.

Thank you to all the parents, carers, aunts, uncles and  grandparents that came to support the  children.  It meant the world to th children to see so many happy, familiar faces in the audience.

The winners of the raffle were Mrs Doull (am session) and Mrs McIntyre (pm session). Congratulations to you both and many thanks to all those who bought a ticket to help raise funds for the nursery.

Nursery Christmas Lunch

The Christmas festivities have truly begun in the nursery, with the children visiting the school dinner hall for their Christmas Lunch.

The lovely dinner ladies made a tasty festive lunch of turkey, with trimmings, and a special pudding of jelly.

As a thank you, the children sang them some of our Christmas songs.

If you wish to purchase tickets for the Christmas Singalong on Monday, please speak to a member of staff.  Raffle tickets are also available at £1 per strip.
