Happy World Book Day P5/6!

Since we are not able to work together in school today I’ve put together some things you can to do to get into the spirit of World Book Day!  You can choose any from the list and you can work on your own or collaborate with others……I’m sure you are in touch with each other!

CLASS NOVEL – CHARLIE BONE ACTIVITIES

  • There are 3 departments at Bloor’s Academy, Music, Drama and Art. Think about your skills and talents.  What department would you be in and why?

 

  • At Bloor’s Academy, the pupils have to wear capes in different colours to show what department they belong to, blue for Music, purple for Drama and green for Art. Design a different item (instead of a cape) for your Bloor’s Academy uniform to show what department you belong to.  What do you have at home that you could use to make your design in real life?  Take a photo so that you can share when we’re back in class!

 

  • Bloor’s Academy is an old and spooky building with towers, stone spiral staircases, echoing corridors and doors that haven’t been opened for years. Have a look around at home and see if you have any materials you could use to make a model of Boor’s Academy.  Boxes and cartons would work or, Lego.  If you don’t want to build a model, you could draw your version of Bloor’s Academy.

 

  • Charlie had a tough first week at Bloor’s Academy. Imagine you are Charlie and write a personal diary for the first few days at your new school.  Use your Emotion Works cogs to explain how you are feeling about your new life and why.

 

 

  • Charlie Bone has an unusual talent. When Charlie looks at photographs, he can hear the people in the photos talking and the sounds happening around them.  Choose a photograph that you have at home and write down what Charlie would hear if he looked at your picture, voices and sound effects!

 

  • Mr Onimous is a mysterious figure in the story so far. He pops up randomly with his three very mysterious cats, ‘The Flames’.  If Charlie Bone was made into a film, I think Mr Omimous and the Flames would have their own music.  It would play when they were about to appear and when they were on screen.  Write your own words for an ‘Onimous and Flames’ song.  You can compose your own tune or fit the words to a piece of music or song you already know.

 

And, if you’ve worked too hard on all of that, relax,  sit back with a mug of hot chocolate and enjoy two super ‘Biggest Book Show on Earth’ films with authors and illustrators sharing stories.

P5/6 Snow Day!

Hi P5/6!

Hope you are all out or have been out enjoying the snow this morning before any more arrives!  Here are some outdoor ideas for you to keep busy…

1. A Headless Snowman

Make a snowman without a head. Then take turns to stand behind the snowman as if your head belongs to the snowman.  Have a range of props such as wigs, hats, scarves, sunglasses to wear.  Take photos of each other doing different poses!

2. Roll it up

Make the biggest snowball possible whilst creating a maze or interesting pattern of grass to follow afterwards. Does the size of the snowball relate to the length of the path created?

3. Guess the object

Look at different things covered with snow and guess what they are. Go back once the snow has melted and see if you recognise the feature.

4. Snow Sculptures

Most people just build snowmen. Make a snow dragon, or a monster instead. The possibilities are endless. Build a miniature yeti or just his giant pair of shoes to stand in. Or, you could create your favourite book character in snow and take a picture to share on World Book Day.

5. White Hunter

Collect together and hide a range of white objects in the snow. Can your friends or family find what you have hidden? Are all the objects truly as white as snow?

6. Funny footprints

Think up new and different footprint tracks in the snow. Instead of walking along, try jumping with both feet together or hopping. Do the hop-scotch. Walk sideways. Skate along and try not to leave a gap between your footprints. Do a funny dance. Is it possible to create an asymmetric pattern when you use both feet?

7. Track animals

Animal and birds leave trails and tracks. Find some tracks and follow them. Do this quietly to avoid frightening any thing or anyone.

8. Frozen Marbles

With all these below zero temperatures,  it might be possible to freeze coloured water inside balloons. Once they have frozen, remove the balloon and you are left with giant marbles or snow bowls!

10. Helping Others

Help the adults clear your paths and driveways to make it safer for people to get around.

However, if it’s getting a little cold outside for you now, there’s plenty you can do to keep busy inside……

1. Snow themed fantasy writing and illustrating

Since today would have been our writing day, think about a fantasy world where it is winter and snowing all year round (think of Narnia).  Write your own fantasy setting for snowy world and, create a fantasy character that lives there.  Think of all our special effects writing techniques and try and include those too.  Draw your character to go with your fantasy story setting.

Yesterday, we talked about persuasive writing techniques.  Create your own persuasive poster about why schools should be open or stay closed on snowy days like today.  See how many of the techniques you can remember!

2. Reading

Catch up/get ahead on your reading and take some extra time to prepare your vocabulary sheet work.  You could also do some vocabulary work on a book that you are reading yourself and share these when we are back in school together for World Book Day.

Think about where we are with our Charlie Bone class novel.  What do you think is going to happen next and why?  Predict what is going to happen to Charlie Bone and his friends at Bloor’s Academy, to Benjamin and Runner Bean and to the mysterious case….

3. Maths

Create you own Number Talks SPLAT! challenges on the computer or by drawing them out.  They could be Fraction SPLATS or Nested SPLATS or, you could come up with your own brand new SPLAT version!

Sneak Peek at our Week – P5/6

On Monday, we did some spelling. For spelling we wrote our spelling words in our literacy jotters and some groups watched their videos for this week’s spelling zone. Next we did maths. First we did our multiplication square. Then we did some revision on 2D shapes. We had to name the shape that was on the smartboard and how many corners and sides it had. We learnt some new shapes and what a group of shapes were called if they have 4 sides and corners. The group is called quadrilateral. After break we had PE with Mr. Muldon. We did gymnastics. It was fun.  We read our fantasy class novel “Magyk” which is about a boy who finds a baby on the street and takes it home with him. We are enjoying it so far!

On Tuesday, for maths we did some more revision on 2D shapes. After that we got given a shape sheet each to cut out and stick in our jotter, then we had to name it and write the properties of it. We read some more of our class novel ‘Magyk’ . Some people went to choir practise with Mrs Drummond and others stayed with Ms Kennedy to do handwriting. For handwriting we focused on the letters ‘or’, ’ar’ and ‘re’. After that the choir came back and we were designing a vehicle to travel to the centre of the Earth in our sketch books for art. It was too wet to go outside for daily mile so we read some more of ‘Magyk’ instead before music with Mrs Drummond. In music we were practising some songs for our upper school show.

On Wednesday, first thing we listened to some poems. Then we started writing a fantasy scene for writing. Using SEWT (Special Effects Writing Techniques) After break we did some more writing. After lunch we heard a few more poems before some people went to choir. Everyone had to vote on one person to say there poem in front of the whole school. Brooke, Alex, Cole, Carlos and Tiana all got 3 votes but Ms Kennedy still had to do her vote and she voted for Alex because she had the best expression so she said her poem ‘A Dug, A Dug’ in front of the whole school. The choir also sang some songs at our Burns Day. After our Burns Day Assembly we had a quick philosophy session with Mrs Hocknull.

On Thursday, first thing we did vocabulary building where we had to look at a picture and describe it using some adjectives.  Next we did a new number talk called ‘Where’s poly?’.  Then we did a reminder on 3D shapes. After break we did some reading comprehension and then class novel before lunch. After lunch we went to the library and people picked some new library books to read at home. Then we came back to class and did our spelling. We did partner work in spelling.

On Friday, first thing we were finishing off our writing. Then we had assembly, after assembly we started to finish off our properties of 2D shapes and finished it off after break.  Lastly, we had our reward time.

A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR WEEK! p5/6

This week in maths we have been doing a variety of different activities for times table recall …times. We rolled a dice for 2 digits and then rolled once more and then multiplied using the grid method.

We also did some multiplication square challenges to speed up our recall of multiplication facts.

In Literacy we have been working on new reading skills, things like Opener Oracle and Setting Scouter. NEW VOCABULARY ALERT….An Oracle is when you know everything!  Opener Oracle was the task set for us.  We had two groups and the Opener Oracle group was looking through their reading book for adverbs, verbs, adjectives and prepositions at the start of the sentences and it was really fun to do. Setting Scouter helps us to learn more ways to understand what language an author uses to set a scene and ways to create an atmosphere.

 

We have started our ‘What A Wonderful World Topic’ and spent some time using our reading skills to find out about Space Exploration.  We’ve also been working hard on our Bridges Showcase for our very special ceremony next Friday.

We finished this week with our Children in Need Spotty walk!

P5/6 – A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR WEEK!

On Tuesday the first day back from the holiday we had a pantomime of ‘Cinderella’. We really enjoyed it. After that we were doing the Harvest alphabet for the harvest assembly on Thursday.  Some people came up with really good ideas. The last thing we did on Tuesday was music with Mrs Drummond. In music we learnt a song for the harvest assembly. We also talked about what are favourite thing was from the pantomime.

On Wednesday the first thing we did was some writing. We were doing personal writing. Some people were writing about our class novel character called Peter from ‘Because of Mr.Terupt’.  Others decided to write about themselves. We were writing about our emotions. In our class novel we are at the top of the ‘story mountain’ which means it the most exciting part! After lunch we were doing maths. We were revising our times tables. We were playing a game for our warm up.  We got given four numbers and we had to find the calculation. For our real maths we were doing a mild challenge and we had to do a calculation crossword. The last thing of the day was philosophy with Mrs Hocknull. We watched a video called ‘The girl and the fox’.

On Thursday in the morning we were doing some drawing for the harvest assembly the P5’s were going to. We had to draw fruit and veg that we harvest. Then the P5s had a practise. Then we had maths. We had a times table challenge. That afternoon p5 went to their cluster Harvest assembly at the Lanthorn centre and shared their Harvest alphabet with the pupils from the other schools.

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear…

Today, the last day of school, had probably the most successful carol concert ever. The tickets were sold out, the hall was full and the brass band was playing while people were settling down.  The songs were all traditional carols that people sing yearly. The readers were very clear when they said their lines and we even got a couple of parents to sing along with us!  The brass band were playing things like Little Donkey and Rudolph.

Our buddies sent letters to Santa and today a special hand written reply from Father Christmas himself arrived!  We took the letters down to the classes and read them to our buddies.Our buddies were so happy to see us and were amazed when we read the replies to them. They liked that every letter was different in a lot of ways. Some people wanted strange things like real unicorns and motorbikes! They liked that every letter had exactly what they asked for and that every letter had different decorations and colours.

What in earth????

Last week p7 in science were investigating the structure of the earth.

We researched the different layers of the earth’s structure.

We found out there are 4 different layers.  The inner core is the hottest part of the earth, outer core still extremely hot. Mantle, the thickness of the mantle is 2900km thick and the crust is the thinnest layer.  It is the layer we live on and is between 50-60 km thick.

We decided to make plasticine models of the structure of the earth.  We even tried to match up the continents on the crust!

Inside the models they were different colours representing each layer, inner core,outer core, mantle, crust. We cut the models in half to see the inside of the earth.

Sky-Tacular

This week P7 went to Sky Academy and had a SPECTACULAR time!

P7 made their own news report with the help of the Sky Academy team.

We have been using our listening, teamwork, co-operation and being a responsible citizen and representing Bankton Primary School.

P7  want to thank all the Sky Academy staff who trusted us with their expensive equipment, such as their £60,000 cameras and also their editing computers.

Primary 7 s German adventures

On Wednesday 5th October, Primary 7 went to JYHS for their German Adventure.

We had to go around JYHS and find different cities in Germany.

We were put into teams with 3 or 4 people one or two from Dedridge and a pupil from JYHS.

It was really fun and we had to use our problem solving skills and got to learn some German vocabulary and a little bit about German cities and German culture.
