Red Squirrel Reporters!

Primary 6 pupils have been using their research, reading and note taking skills to find out information about red squirrels in Scotland. We have been learning to record and organise our information in writing and by using Microsoft Powerpoint and Word. Working in pairs, we have found out that red squirrels are native to Scotland but that unfortunately their numbers are declining due to the rise of grey squirrels and a disease that they carry.

Firstly, we planned our reports by using categories to gather information. Next, we wrote our reports by hand and presented them in an organised fashion using subheadings. Afterwards, we typed them up using Microsoft Word. Finally, we self and peer assessed our writing against our targets.

We have enjoyed writing our reports and are pleased that we have worked hard to meet our writing targets. We have learned lots of information about the red squirrel and are looking forward to some themed art work next week. Watch this space!

Pupil of the Week this week was Lauryn who not only met her writing targets, but produced a plan, written and typed report to a very high standard. Well Done for all your hard work, Lauryn!

P6 Basketball Festival – Reminder

Image result for basketball P6A and P6B will attend a Basketball Festival at Bathgate Academy on the morning of Tuesday 21st March.

We expect this to be a valuable experience for our P6 pupils who will have the opportunity to have fun and compete against teams from schools in our cluster. With the festival less than a week away, please can we ask you, if you have not already done so, to return your child’s permission slip, EE2 form and £1 towards our transport to their class teacher, asap?

Thank you for your co-operation – we look forward to sharing our experience here on the school blog!

From Balbardie to the Barracks

P6B have been taking part in a whole school effort to design, create and send Easter cards to our service men and women in Iraq, Brunei, Afghanistan and on HMS Middleton.

Before beginning our cards, we explored and identified common Easter themes, including animals, symbols, colours, objects and stories. We then discussed different ways we could design and create our cards and shared ideas in small groups.

The end results were colourful and creative cards which the children worked hard to complete. Murray was awarded ‘Pupil of the Week’ for his particular, and very creative, effort.

We hope the service men and women enjoy receiving them as much as we did making them!

Cyberbullying: Think Before You Type

I am aware that positive friendships and relationships can promote health and the health and wellbeing of others. HWB 2-44b

In P6B, we have been exploring cyber bullying. We researched and considered some key questions –

  1. What is cyber bullying and how is it defined?
  1. What are the effects of cyber bullying?
  1. What can be done about cyber bullying and who can help?
  2. How do we keep ourselves safe online?

We worked in pairs to record our information and use it to create a leaflet about cyber bullying. We had to think about presentation, organisation and the quality and variety of information that we were sharing. We found this to be a very useful activity and many of us were able to relate and share our own experiences of cyber bullying.

Jack: The best thing to do is not to reply to a cyber bully and to block them from speaking to you.

Luca: Only accept friend requests from people that you know, otherwise ignore them.

Jamie: Never give out your password to anyone. People can pretend to be you.

Kamron: I found it very shocking how many people are affected by cyber bullying.

Casey: Cyber bullying is nasty and not acceptable. You need to do something about it.

Hopefully, we will now know what to do about cyber bullying and how to keep ourselves and others safe online.

Words, words, words!

This week, P6B have been busy preparing for their assembly. This included learning the words to our Scottish songs, Wild Mountain Thyme and Loch Lomond. Firstly, we did this through singing practice which allowed us to become familiar with the tune and rhythm of the songs. We then explored the meaning of the songs. Firstly, we looked at ‘Loch Lomond’ and, verse by verse, we illustrated the words.

Next, during handwriting, we focussed on the organisation of our work as well as the correct formation and joining of our letters. We had to use the song ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ as the context of our handwriting and, verse by verse, we used our very best presentation skills to write the song in our finest handwriting.

We thoroughly enjoyed performing our songs during today’s assembly and this was supported by the fact we had a good recall and understanding of the words we sung. I’m sure that in the future whenever we hear these songs, we will definitely be able to join in a sing-song!
