Class B love P.E!

The boys in Class B really enjoy P.E time! We have been working hard to improve our balance, co-ordination and object control. We had lots of fun participating in the balance and control obstacle course! We all made sure to land on our feet and to bend our knees on landing to help stay steady.  The boys tried really hard to complete the course and to improve their performance each time.

During our game, we try hard to follow the game rules and demonstrate good sportsmanship.

We also help to look after the P.E equipment. We take care when using the equipment and help to tidy up at the end of our P.E session.

‘It’s great, I really really like P.E.  We have been learning about balance’.  Jamie

Music in Class B

We have been learning about texture in music.   We can create thick and thin textures using our voices as well as a range of musical instruments. When few instruments are playing the texture is thin, when more instruments playing the texture is thick.

blog 1

We’ve learned that a texture can be thin and loud as well as thick and quiet.

The boys in class B enjoyed creating their own musical instruments and demonstrating the various ways that they can be played.

We’ve been learning how to read music and have to listen very carefully to the different sounds.

Literacy in Class B

This week we practised our spelling words using Minecraft writing!

‘Minecraft writing is a bit like robot writing! You look then you think then cover then reveal and see if it’s correct.’ Cody

Class B have been learning when to use capital letters. We try to remember when to use capital letters but sometimes we forget. This week we have been trying extra hard to use capital letters.

‘At the start of the sentences and the word ‘I’. Cameron

We made posters to display on our Literacy Wall to help us remember when to use capital letters. We’ve been demonstrating our knowledge of when to use capital letters in our writing and some of us also enjoyed playing a capital letters game.

‘The first game was easy because all of the capital letters had to go at the start of the sentences.  The second gam ewas a little bit harder becasue the capital leters were not just for the start.’ Jamie

‘Easy because I like it, I finished the jigsaw and fix the funny sentence.’ Liam

Liam enjoys using the class quiet area. In the quiet are you can find lots of books and comics as well as some soft toys to cuddle! Liam loves The Beano but this week decided to read a recipe book instead.

Class B make their own Information Leaflets

Class B know lots about The Vikings. We have been using lots of different sources to help us learn, and have written some notes about Viking Longships. Since we know lots about The Vikings we decided to use our notes to create information leaflets. We were great at turning our notes into sentences.

‘We’re making leaflets because we’re going to give them to P4G to help them learn about the Vikings.Cameron

‘So that P4G knows about The Vikings’. Dylan

‘The East Links Family Park is my favourite leaflet because it has a picture of soft play’. Liam

blog 2

We enjoyed watching a BBC Bitesize clip which gave us tips for creating leaflets. We also enjoyed looking at information leaflets in class and were about to spot some interesting features.

‘It is decorated. It is decorated with pictures and writing. Some of the writing is different. Some are medium, some are big and even some are small.’ Cameron

‘Inside leaflets we can find pictures and writing to give us information.’ Cody

blog 1

Next week we will finish our leaflet and deliver them to P4G. We hope the boys and girls enjoy reading our leaflets and learn more about Viking Longships.

The Vikings Are Coming!

As you know, Class 2 are learning about The Vikings. We learned that The Vikings came to Orkney in Northern Scotland. We’ve been looking at photographs of the Orkney coastline to get an idea of what The Vikings would have seen on their approach to Orkney.
We looked at pictures and were able to spot some interesting features such as…

‘the smooth shiny sea’ Liam

‘the sharp grass’ Aiden

blog 2

At Art we have been learning to create texture. We painted beautiful pictures of the Orkney shore line and named our work ‘The Vikings Are Coming!’ Our challenge was to use a range of objects to create texture in our paintings. We spoke about how the land features would feel if we were to touch them, and tried to create texture using printing techniques.

‘Texture makes your pictures smooth. You can make it smooth by using materials such as Lego, paint and even a rolling pin’. Cody

‘I tried to create rocks using a wood chip this made a rough texture. I used my finger and Lego bricks to create the sharp grassy texture’. Aiden

‘I used rough material, the texture brush and the sponge roller to paint the jaggy rocks’. Cameron

We are looking forward to sharing our art work at the Balbardie Art Exhibition.

Investigating Viking Longships

The boys in class 2 have been learning to use a range of sources to find information. Our mission this week was to find out more information about Viking Longships.

Cameron already knows some sources that he uses to find out more information about The Vikings.

‘I use the teachers, books, pictures and Google’. Cameron

This week we used the BBC Primary History website and were all able to access this independently. We were able to navigate the Viking Longship page to help us complete our question sheet.

GEDC1223

Here is some of the information that we discovered:

  • Vikings uses Longships for war and raiding as they were fast and could be used to sail in deep and shallow waters.
  • Vikings used smaller, slower boats for fishing.
  • The sail was made out of woven wool.
  • The Vikings used the sun, stars and landmarks to help find their way.

We are going to use our notes on Viking Longships to help us create information leaflets for P4G, who will soon be learning about the Vikings.

Our future missions will be to select from a variety of sources to help us to find out more about information about The Vikings! Some of us believe that the information we found out is definitely true because we found it online. We will also be investigating the extent to which different information sources can be trusted.

We have been very busy making Longship models and creating a map to show the routes travelled by the Vikings when they made their way to Scotland.  Take a look at our work so far.

A Very Special Guest!

The children in Primary 4 and 5 had a very special treat this week.  A very famous author came to visit!  We have been learning Scots poems and songs, so we were very excited to hear that Mathew Fitt was coming to Balbardie!

We enjoyed learning about Mathew Fitt before we met him. We used his website to find out more information, and we prepared some great questions to ask.

Cody welcomed Mathew Fitt to Balbardie and brought him to class 2.  Mathew read some fantastic poems and stories to us.  They were very funny.

‘Some of the poems were disgusting!’ Dylan

We listened to ‘King O The Midden’ and ‘The Three little Pigs’ from The Little Book o Fairy Tales.

We learned that Mathew started writing poems when he was in Primary 6 and his favourite subjects at school were Writing and History.

We are looking forward to hearing some more of Mathew Fitt’s stories and poems.

Class 2 Set Sail!

The Vikings

We had great fun in the Sensory Room this week with Mrs Laing. The Sensory Room had been transformed into a Viking Longship! The boys in class 2 dressed up as Vikings with a tunic and helmet. There was a giant red sail on the Longship and even a fire pit and pot for the boys to cook some breakfast before setting sail. The boys used props and their imagination to show what they would have done on the morning before setting off on a Viking voyage. They woke up, made breakfast, got dressed, packed their weapons, said goodbye to family members and set sail!

Our Sensory Room role play helped us with our writing. We wrote in our Viking diaries about the morning of our voyage. We included lots of important information in our diaries and remembered to write about how we were feeling. We wrote on the front cover of our diaries in Viking Runes!

‘I liked being in the Viking Longship.’ Dylan

‘I liked pretending that animals lived in my Viking house. A cow!’ Liam

‘I enjoyed packing the stuff in the Longship.  I packed a shield and my weapons.’ Jamie

‘I liked when the big wave came, I was making sure that our boat was running smoothly.’ Cody

‘My favourite was the same as Cody, the waves.  I dropped my weapons in the ocean by mistake!’ Aiden

‘I liked writing in my Viking Diary!  I got a certificate.’ Cameron

Class 2 Discover the Vikings

We have started our new topic. We were archeologists searching for clues about what our new topic would be. We found some pottery and a helmet. We discovered we would be learning about the Vikings. We are very excited about our new topic!

We want to learn different things about the Vikings.

Aiden would like to know where the Vikings got the horns for their helmets and cups.

Liam would like to learn about Viking weddings and funerals.

Cody and Dylan want to know about the weapons Vikings used and where they got metal from.

Cameron is looking forward to learning about Viking houses and the food they used to eat.

Christianity

Class 2 have been learning about Christianity. This week we have been learning about Christian worship. We have been learning about the different things that you can find inside and outside of the church building.

‘You can pray to God at church. You can also pray in a graveyard or in your bedroom or lots of other places but I think Church is the best place to pray.’ Dylan

‘A church is a building where Christians come to pray. Some are big and some are small’. Liam

We turned our sensory room into a church and enjoyed learning more about church, prayer and how to behave appropriately in church.

Jamie was able to make comparisons between churches and mosques.
‘In a mosque you have to take off your shoes but in church you don’t have to take off your shoes. On the top of a mosque you sometimes see a crest and on top of a church tower you sometimes see a cross.’ Jamie

We enjoyed learning about stained glass windows. Some churches have plain windows whilst others have colourful stained glass windows which tell stories from the Bible. The boys in class 2 made beautiful stained glass windows.

‘I made a colourful stained glass window’. Liam

Cameron and Cody enjoyed learning why some clocks on church towers are blue and would like to find out if you know why this is. Please put your answers in the comment section below.

RME in Class 2

Religious and Moral Education

In class 2, we have been learning about Christianity.

‘Some Christians believe God made the world’. Dylan

We painted pictures to show what happened on the days in the story of Creation. Dylan enjoyed painting day 2, when Christians believe God created the sky and the sea.

We have been reading some Christian stories, including ‘The Good Samaritan’. After reading the story, the boys in class 2 re-told the story in their own words using props. We discussed why we thought Jesus told this story.

‘There was a walking man who was travelling, robbers hurt him, and two men didn’t help him. The Samaritan did.’ Dylan

‘So that other people can be thoughtful like the good Samaritan’ Cameron

‘Because he wanted people to be kind to others’ Cody

The boys in class 2 drew great pictures of their special friends. We have been writing about our special friends and what makes a special friend. We also created recipes with ingredients for friendship. Some of our ingredients include: laughter, caring, kindness, fun, honest
Liam wrote about his friend Caitlin.

‘Caitlin is my special friend because I love her we play ring a ring of roses’. Liam

Jamie and Cameron had lots of fun in the Rainbow Room building a house and garage!

Class 2 are in a spin!

Class 2 have learned lots about tornados this week.

Aiden said “we have learned tornados don’t come to Scotland.  They go to other countries like Brazil, USA and Italy”.  Do you know any other countries that experience tornados?

We watched tornado video clips on Brainpop.  Cody thought Moby being sooked up by the tornado was funny.

We made tornado pictures and then wrote stories about a tornado coming.  Caitlin wrote about her friends being hurt by a tornado.  Aiden’s story was about hiding from a tornado in a basement.

We made a tornado in Class 2 using a big net and cutting long paper.  We had to spin round fast.  Caitlin liked being in it.

This week – class 2

Some children from Class 2 enjoyed the Procession. All the children in Class 2 have been enjoying have some time in their new classes. They said that they are enjoying  spending time with their new teachers and the other children. Liam is at Disneyland this week and is  missing the fun at Balbardie.

Aiden – I did lots of integration with my p4 class. I enjoyed swimming this week I got my “stookie” off on Thursday. I could swim again. I was good at it.  I did some art in class P4 and liked this.

Caitlin – Visiting Class 3 again this week has been fun.

Cody – We learned how to make giant bubbles.

Dylan -I wrote about how to make bubbles.

Class 2 Are Erupting! :)

Class 2 were learning about volcanoes with Miss Barrie.  Everyone learned interesting facts and then made a volcano.  They even erupted!

Liam said “Wow the volcano was AMAZING!”  Liam’s favourite part was when the vinegar was added and the volcanoes erupted.

Dylan liked learning about volcanoes.   Dylan has been researching facts about volcanoes.  “The biggest volcano is on Mars.  Jupiter has volcanoes too“.  Dylan liked making a volcano and watching it erupt.  He said “I liked it erupting but it was smelly because of the vinegar”

Cody said “The volcanoes were EPIC!  Don’t add too much vinegar or you will get soaked with lava!  The lava is the magma that is in the real life volcanoes.  You can hardly see the magma.  There are different types of volcanoes.  You could get a book about volcanoes so you know what volcanoes are for.  We have been looking at one in our class.”

Cameron enjoyed watching the volcanoes erupt.  He said “They kept erupting over and over and over.  It was exciting”.

Class 2 enjoying Fitness Fortnight!

Dylan has told you the things you need to make a wind sock.

You will need:

Tissue paper

Strip of paper

Sticky tape

Glue stick

Wool

A straw

Caitlin and Cody have told you how to make a wind sock

  1. Get everything you need.

2.  Make a circle with the paper.

Class 2 – Our week

This week class 2 have been really busy as usual.

On Monday we went out and about down to the library. We had to look for books about weather.  Weather is our new topic we are learning about.

On Tuesday some of our class practised skipping, jumping and pushing skills at PE. Caitlin and Aiden went on the trip to the viking museum with P4LG. Caitlin said she liked that her mum came along and that her favourite part was the playroom.

In sensory room we experimented with water and made bubbles. We blew big and small bubbles, we also changed the colour of the water. Liam enjoyed this activity, he said it was fun.

On Wednesday we had special visitors in our classrooms.Caitlin said she enjoyed the activity she did with the visitorsmixing black and white paint to make a grey colour, then they painted rain clouds creating different tones with the mixed paint.

Caitlin, Aiden and Cody enjoyed celebrating success on Thursday – we all enjoyed singing the build up song.

Class 2

It has been a busy week in Class 2.

Liam and Dylan had a great day at Mill Farm on Wednesday.

Liam enjoyed learning about a gosling and touching it’s soft feathers.  He thought it was funny when it did the toilet on the lady’s trousers.  Yuck!

Dylan said “I went to Mill Farm.  First we went on the tractor ride then adventure zone.  After lunch we went to see animals.  I saw a gosling. I liked the park.”

On Thursday we went swimming.  Everyone in class 2 likes swimming.

Caitlin said “It was good fun!”.

Aiden was a great helper at the swimming pool.  He said “I was helping people at swimming yesterday. First I helped people put their clothes in their lockers. Later on I said three, two, one to start the swimming race”.

Mill Farm

Some of the children from class 1 and class 2 went to Mill Farm this week.   We had lots of fun exploring the oil museum.  Dylan especially enjoyed going into the coal mine!  It was really dark inside, and we got a sense of how life would have been for men who worked down in the coal mines.

We took a tractor ride around the farm and managed to spot some farm animals.  We saw cows, goats, sheep and pigs.  We listened carefully to Elaine as she told us all about one of the goslings on the farm.  A gosling is a baby goose.  We each had a turn of gently stroking the gosling.  It was very soft and fluffy!  Have a look at the eggs.  Do you know which egg is a chicken egg, and which egg is a goose egg?

‘I liked seeing the rabbits and the gosling.  The gosling did a poop and got Elaine’s trousers all muddy! Oh No said Elaine.’ David

We had great fun in the adventure zone!  The adults were very pleased with how everyone behaved and followed the Mill Farm timetable!  Thank you to Lewis’ mum who came with us to Mill Farm.
