End of term thoughts from P3/2

What have we enjoyed from term 1?

“I have enjoyed Art this term.” Niamh
“I enjoyed the church service.” Katie
“I enjoyed writing a story called The Most Magnificent Thing.” Murray
“I have enjoyed building cars from the K’nex.” Dylan
“I liked our Wallace and Gromit inventors theme.” Ranna
“I have enjoyed reading this term.” William
“I have enjoyed Maths this term. I like doing sums.” James
“I liked building a Kronkiwongi in the Lego challenge.” Zara and Miles.

This week we have been working on addition, including learning how to add 2 digit numbers vertically. The children in the Maths Marvels group did this very well. We also finished off our inventors topic with a Lego challenge. Our challenge was to design and build a Kronkiwongi. A kronkiwongi can be anything we imagine it to be and is built from Lego. Here are some of our models:

Have a wonderful holiday everyone! 🙂

Where do Teachers keep their pets?

We have been learning about rhyme and reading rhyming stories and poems. This week we listened to a poem called ‘Where do Teachers keep their pets?’ by Paul Cookson. We then worked in pairs to create our own lines for the poem. Here is the poem we created together:

Mr Hants keeps his ants
hidden in his underpants.

Mrs Clark keeps her shark
hidden in the water park.

Mr Flake has a snake
it lives at the bottom of a lake.

Mrs Rocks has an ox
who lives in a giant box.

Mrs Grouse has a mouse
that she kept in a doll’s house.

Mrs Log had a dog
and she kept it in a bog.

Dr Flat had a cat
and it lived under his hat.

Mrs Hee had some bees
who lived in a tree.

Mr Dox has a fox
and he kept it in a box.

Mrs Bat had a rat
who lives in her top hat.

Mr Hog had a dog
he kept it on a log.

Mrs Mish had a fish
she keeps it in a big dish.

Mr Rog had a dog
inside a giant log.

Dr Knox had an ox
he hid it in a box.

Mr Hee had a bee,
it lived in his Christmas tree.

Dr Nishy had a fishy,
who lived in a little dishy.

Mr Nake has a snake,
who lived in his tadpole lake.

Mrs Ham had a lamb,
who lived in strawberry jam.

Mr Float had a goat,
it lived on a sailing boat.

Miss Bake had a snake,
who lived on the garden rake.

Mr Low had a crow,
who lived on a giant bow.

Mr Fox had an ox,
it lived inside his socks.

Mr Rarrots keeps parrots,
In a bag of carrots.

Mrs Gallagher thinks we did a super job! 🙂

P3/2 learning update

This week we have continued our focus on rhyming words, reading the story ‘The Rhyming Rabbit’ by Julia Donaldson. We enjoyed listening to the poems made up by the rabbit and trying to guess what words the rabbit might have used in his poems. The story links in to our next focus on rhyming poems.

We have been working on our addition skills and have been using our counting on skills to add within 100.

For our technology theme we have been learning collaborative group working skills. This week’s challenge was to build a bridge from paper that could hold a toy car. 2 groups managed this successfully and Amy and Campbell also worked very well showing good problem solving and team work skills.

We are looking forward to sharing our learning with parents and carers at Shared Start on Wednesday 7th October.

Well done to Zara who was our class dojo champion for the second time and to Skye who was awarded pupil of the week for her knowledge of addition doubles. We also have lots of pupils on step 2 and 3 now, keep up the great behaviour everyone 🙂

Famous Inventors and their Inventions

P3/2 have been reading for information to discover more about famous inventors and their inventions. We learned that inventions are not always machines, for example James Naismith invented the game of basketball and Edward Jenner invented vaccinations to stop people from dying from diseases. We also learned that Louis Braille invented the language of Braille for those with sight impairments.

We worked in groups to produce posters about an inventor and then shared this information with others.

This week P3/2 have enjoyed

We have been reflecting on what we have enjoyed in school this week. Here are some of the things we said:

“I’ve enjoyed Maths this week. I like working with big numbers.” Amy

“I enjoyed writing, we were writing Rules for School.” Rory

“I’ve enjoyed Maths, I like playing the more and less game.” Catriona

“I enjoyed learning joins in Handwriting.” Skye

“I enjoyed making a timeline of old to new inventions.” Zara

“I enjoyed doing handwriting.” Eva

“I enjoyed learning about the village of the Great Oak Tree in Drama with Mrs Hay.” Katie

“I liked drama too, it was fun.” Spencer

“I’ve enjoyed everything this week!” Alex

Well done to Zara who was Pupil of the Week for her working hard and setting a good example to others and to Alex who was our Class Dojo winner. We now have lots of children on step 1 towards the Golden Club too, well done to them too! 🙂

This week in P3/2

This week we have been learning…

“About inventions. We learned who made the telephone.” Amy
“Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.” Ranna
“We watched Wallace and Gromit to help us to learn to be inventors.” Alex
“We learned what makes something an invention. We sorted pictures of things that have been invented and that have not. An egg and a rabbit are not inventions!” Zara
“We designed our own inventions.” Hannah
“In Maths we have been learning numbers to 1000. We were finding numbers before and after 3 digit numbers.” Miles
“We have been looking at tens numbers and counting in tens.” Spencer
“We were learning about rhyming words and we made rhyming flowers.” Niamh

We enjoyed making number lines in the playground with Mrs Jamieson. We counted in 10s or 100s and then had to guess where a number she shouted would be on our number lines.

We enjoyed listening to a rhyming story, ‘The Shark in the Dark’ and making our own rhyming flowers for our classroom display. We also looked at how some rhyming words don’t follow the same spelling pattern, e.g chair and care.

We watched some Wallace and Gromit clips about inventions and learned that inventions happen when someone has a problem or question. We thought of problems that we have and created inventions to help solve them. Mrs Gallagher created a sockinator that washes and pairs up socks so that she doesn’t end up with odd socks! 🙂

Well done to Joshua, who was pupil of the week for his detailed invention drawing and to our class dojo winners this week, Skye and Catriona.

Settling in to P3/2

Since coming back to school we have been settling in to our new class and making new friends. We have been learning about our rights. We have the right to play and have had time to play within our classroom and have made suggestions of things we would like to play with over the school year. We learned about our right to be kept safe from harm and thought about some adults in our life who help us to have this right.

We have enjoyed PE with Mr Jeffries and Drama with Mrs Hay and we have been enjoying our Maths work on numbers and counting. We are going to spend some time this term looking at rhyming stories and poems and Mrs Gallagher is encouraging us to bring in any examples of these from home, as well as bringing our own books or comics to read in class if we wish too.

Next week we look forward to starting our learning theme ‘Wallace and Gromit’s World of Invention’.

Pupil of the week for this week was Lucas for an excellent start to P3 and our Class Dojo of the week was Ross. Well done to you both and well done to everyone for such a good start to P3/2.

Golden Club event by P2bg

On Thursday we were at the Golden Club event. There were 4 activities for us to enjoy – bouncy castle, soak the house captains, ice lollies and inflatable slide. Here is what we had to say about the event:

‘I liked soak the house captains and the ice cream.’ Jess
‘I liked the ice lollies.’ Denholm
‘I liked the terror slide.’ James
‘When Catriona and I went down the slide she was sitting on my knee, it was funny.’ Teighan
‘I liked bouncing down the slide.’ Alfie
‘I tried to do a 360 down the slide.’
‘I liked the terror slide.’ Hannah

It’s great to be in the Golden Club and we are all going to try hard to get there again in Primary 3.

P2bg enjoy the sun!

It has been great to see the sun this week and has linked in perfectly with our Weather topic. We learned about what the sun is and why we need it here on Earth. We discussed ways of keeping safe in the sun and we all know why this is very important. We made posters to tell others what they can do to stay safe in the sun.

Lucas told us that the sometimes the sun is shining in his front garden and then it moves to his back garden. We know that this is because the Earth is moving and is at different angles to the sun at different times of the day. This led to us discussing why our shadows are not the same size and in the same place for the whole day. We learned that shadows are made when light cannot travel through an object. We measured shadows at different times of the day. We found out that our shadows are shortest during the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm.

P2g reflections

As we prepare for our move on day visit to P3 we have been thinking about what we have enjoyed about being in P2 this year, here are some of our responses:

‘I love Maths in P2.’ Amy
‘I like my teachers in P2.’ James
‘I liked the P2 show.’ Joshua
‘I like reading, writing and maths.’ Lucas
‘I liked learning new things, especially about weather.’ Jess
‘I just like learning.’ Alex
Euan, Kiara, Sofiye and Skye all liked the trip to Stirling Castle.

Next Wednesday we will spend a day in P3 with our new class and teacher.

This week we have been learning how to split numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. We have been very good at identifying the value of digits in numbers.

We have been learning that the wind is moving air and that there are different words to describe the strength of the wind. We were really keen to find out more about extreme weather conditions after finding out about hurricanes and tornadoes. We thought about some questions we wanted to know the answer to and we will be researching using the internet next week to see if we can find the answers. Here are some of the things we want to know more about:

‘Where was the worst flood in Britain?’ Kay
‘Why are there not hurricanes and tornadoes in Scotland?’ Sofiye
‘What kind of weather do they have in the jungle?’ Alex
‘Where do hurricanes happen?’ Jess
‘Why do bush fires happen?’ Euan
‘How does thunder happen?’ Skye

Amy, Kiara, Hannah, Alex and Sofiye are very excited about being flower girls in the procession tomorrow and Euan, Murray and Campbell will be on our school float. Gemma, Spencer and Teighan are also walking with the school. We hope everyone has a great day at the procession tomorrow and has a lovely holiday on Monday.

Lots of learning in P2bg

This week we have been experimenting. We were testing materials which would be good to use to make an umbrella. We enjoyed putting water onto different materials and finding out what would happen. We learned that paper and cotton would not be very good materials to use but plastic would be very good. We discussed the fact that although some materials like metal and glass are waterproof they would not be suitable to use to make an umbrella but they are good for using at other times when you need something to be waterproof, for example when you are cooking using water or drinking water.

We have also been learning how rainbows happen. Campbell gave us a super explanation of how rainbows are formed and was awarded our pupil of the week certificate for doing so. We know that rainbows are not a type of weather but they happen when you have rain and sun at the same time. We made some tissue paper rainbows which have brightened up our classroom. 🙂

In writing this week we were learning about onomatopoeia. Although this is a BIG word, we know that it has a simple meaning – a word that describes a sound. We enjoyed listening to a Dr Seuss story with lots of sound words in it and then we listened to some weather sounds and thought of good words to use to describe them. We then created posters showing onomatopoeia weather words.

We look forward to sharing our learning in school with our parents and carers on Wednesday 27th May @ 8.55am.

Have a lovely weekend!

Celebrating Success in P2bg

This week in P2bg we have had lots of celebrations for achievements and successes in our class. We enjoyed performing Zip Ah Dee Doo Dah at Celebrating Success. We are proud of Alfie, Hannah, James and Ranna who were all awarded certificates.
May 2015 677

May 2015 672

May 2015 674

May 2015 675

We are also proud of Amy who received an award for outstanding achievement in P.E this session.

Our pupil of the week this week is William who has been trying hard to write independently and our RRS award went to Teighan for being respectful and fair.

Well done to all our successful pupils, keep up the hard work!

This week we have been learning about clouds. We learned about the water cycle and did some small experiments to demonstrate this. Our challenge is to try an experiment at home putting a small amount of water into a dish and keeping it in a warm place. We are hoping to see that over time this water will evaporate and that will prove to us that the water cycle really happens! Our discussions about water reminded us that we have the right to clean and safe drinking water. We knew that not all children across the world have access to clean and safe drinking water and that in some countries it does not rain very much which stops plants from growing. Mrs Gallagher was very impressed with our knowledge!

We listened to the story Little Cloud by Eric Carle and then wrote our own stories about the adventures of a cloud. We also made some cloud shape pictures which will be displayed in the classroom beside our stories.

Olaf needs a coat! By P2bg

This week we carried out our science experiments to test whether or not wearing a coat would stop a snowman from melting. Most of the class were very surprised to see that the ice cubes in our test ‘snowmen’ melted less quickly when they were wearing a coat. Well done to Miles who correctly predicted this would happen last week!

We continues our Frozen learning theme by learning about why it snows. We know that Elsa doesn’t really cause snow to happen but we had some interesting ideas about what actually does cause it to snow. Teighan thought it might get God pouring out flour when he was making a cake and some of us thought that Santa makes it snow. We learned how snow is actually made by watching a video of water droplets freezing to become ice crystals. We then made our own paper snowflakes and wrote explanations of what happens when it snows to accompany them.

We have been working hard learning our songs for Celebrating Success on Thursday 14th May and look forward to seeing our friends and family there.

P2bg news

This week in P2bg we have reflected on what we have learned this week. Here are some of our responses:

‘The 10 times table.’ William
‘How to make a prayer mat.’ Tanatswa
‘New games in PE.’ Euan
‘I learned la tete is your head in French.’ Ranna
‘About the festival of Eid.’ Jess
‘Before and after numbers to 100.’ Alfie

We started our new topic – Olaf’s Coat (weather). We watched a clip from the film Frozen and discussed why Olaf wanting to experience summer was not a good idea. Next week we are going to carry out an experiment to see if a Olaf wearing a coat will help him to stay Frozen. Most of the class don’t think this is a good idea but Miles thinks the coat will stop him from melting. We are excited to see who is right.

Have a lovely holiday weekend!

P2 visit to Stirling Castle

On Thursday both p2 classes visited Stirling Castle. We really enjoyed our day. We were all able to look around the castle and identify the parts of the castle we have learned about like the portcullis, the battlements and the curtain wall. We enjoyed exploring the castle vaults where we got to play some medieval musical instruments, dress up in medieval clothing, learn how dyes for clothing were made and see a court jester. It was also great to see the Stirling Heads in real life too, we thought they looked great!
After lunch we had a special workshop with a lady called Kirsten. We visited the palace bedrooms and the kitchens and we had a chance to play around with some knight’s armour and weapons.
We talked about what we enjoyed the most:
Teighan, Spencer, Tanatswa, Alfie and Kiara all liked dressing up.
Campbell, Jess, Kay, Joshua, Euan and Miles all liked being able to play with the weapons.
Denholm enjoyed everything because it was the first time he had visited a castle.
Alex liked meeting the Queen’s lady in waiting.
Amy liked visiting the kitchens and seeing what they ate in medieval times.
Sofiye liked seeing the real Stirling Heads.
Gemma liked going into the vaults and being able to touch things from the past.

This week in p2bg

This week we have been learning how magic e changes the vowel sound in words. Mrs Gallagher introduced us to Walter the Wizard who is going to help us to read and spell words with magic e.

We have been working hard on rehearsals for our p2 show and had our first whole run through yesterday. Our homework task is to design a backdrop to be displayed during the show. Mrs Innes will be picking the winning designs next week.

For our Castles topic we have been learning about The Stirling Heads in Stirling Castle. These are wooden carvings of kings, queens and historical people which have been restored and are displayed on a ceiling in Stirling Castle. We used these as a stimulus to create our own portraits. We learned how to draw eyes, nose and mouth correctly and Mrs Gallagher is very pleased with our finished work. They will be displayed outside our classroom, please come and take a look.

Well done to Kiara who achieved our rights respecting award for last month for always being kind and respectful and to Gemma for achieving the award for p2 pupil of the month in drama. Gemma has worked really hard on her solo performance for the p2 show and has shown great confidence in singing on stage.

Marvellous Mathematicians in P2bg

This week in p2 the Squares maths group have astounded Mrs Gallagher with their Maths skills. We have been learning how to add multiples of 10 together and everyone in this group has shown that they can do this very well. Mrs Gallagher is going to have to think very hard to come up with even more challenging Maths work for this group for next week!

The Circles group have been learning how to add 10 to a number and Alfie was very good at recalling the facts for these sums very quickly and accurately.

Well done to all our marvellous mathematicians!

Also this week we have been learning more about Castles. Our latest challenge from Nicolas the knight is to be able to name parts of a castle. We already knew lots of names for parts of castles but we learned some new ones too. We learned about a portcullis, a barbican, the keep, the curtain wall and the bailey.

We have been reflecting on what we are getting better at in school, here are some of our responses:

Gemma ‘I’m getting better at balancing in PE’.
Denholm ‘I’m getting better at adding up to 100.’
Jess ‘I’m getting better at singing.’
Lucas ‘I’m getting better at knowing more facts about castles.’
Euan ‘I’m getting better at reading my reading book.’
Alfie ‘I’m getting better at running in PE.’

A special letter for p2bg

This week we received a special letter. The letter was from a knight called Nicholas who wants to help us to learn about castles. Nicholas is going to set us challenges to complete and has promised us that if we complete the challenges we will be rewarded with a banquet.
Our first challenge was to learn about the job of a knight and to make a coat of arms to reflect our family. We learned that in medieval times boys would start their training to become a knight aged 7 or 8. This job was called a page. A page had lots of things to learn including how to carve meat and serve food, how to hunt with birds of prey, how to use a sword, how to play chess, how to read and write, how to dance and how to ride a horse. They also had to learn good manners. We are going to be rewarded with extra dojo points when we use good manners in class.
We made our own family coat of arms which showed things we enjoy, things we are good at or things we would like to achieve in our lives. Some of us also included our family names on the coat of arms.
We think we have successfully completed our first challenge and look forward to seeing what Nicholas wants us to do next. 🙂

p2bg news

This week in p2bg we worked hard creating our art work for the art exhibition. Our work has a Scottish theme and you’ll be able to view and buy at at the exhibition at the end of the month.
In Maths we’ve been working hard to practise our addition and lots of pupils have improved their big maths scores this week.
We are learning more songs for our p2 show, some of us even have solo singing parts.
For our review jotters this week we thought about what we have enjoyed most in school, here are some of our responses:
Amy – ‘I liked the new role play area in class.’
Teighan – ‘I enjoyed doing class talks, RME and Big Maths’.
Murray- ‘I liked using the ipads in Maths’.
Lucas- ‘I enjoyed RME, Maths and reading this week’.

P2’s assembly

Last week we were the first class to perform our assembly in our new gym hall. Our assembly was ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’, linked to our learning about day and night. We told the story of Plop, a baby barn owl who was afraid of the dark and was helped to overcome his fears by some people who showed him that dark can be fun, interesting and beautiful.
We talked about what we enjoyed most about performing to an audience, here are some of our comments:

Murray: I liked seeing my mummy and daddy there.

Kiara: My favourite part was singing.

Euan: I liked everything!

Spencer: My favourite part was the song.

William: I liked it when the cat helped Plop.
