20#20 Aspirations

Under the five National Objectives headings, the 20#20 Excellence in Learning Technology Strategy sets out the following aspirations:

To change the culture of the use of ICT

  • We will work together to bridge the gap between home, school and community by helping spread existing online behaviours and ensure children have access to rich and exciting technologies that help them learn, play, communicate, collaborate and socialise.
  • We will engage all learners by promoting activity that is seen to be valuable, using systems that are easy to use, cutting edge and cost efficient. Everyone must be encouraged to share more and this should be underpinned by making sure that young people and adults adopt responsible approaches to using technology.

To improve confidence in the use of ICT for learners, teachers, school leaders and parents

  • We will build on the links between technology use at home and in other aspects of our lives and take these experiences into schools to help us develop confidence in learning.
  • We will seek imaginative solutions and give high priority to addressing reliability issues with hardware, connectivity and filtering.
  • We will encourage people to develop personal learning networks and communities of practice and help existing and future school leaders understand the benefits of using technology to support and improve learning as well as what it means to be a responsible digital citizen.

To promote new behaviours for teaching

  • We aim to ensure that technology has the same transformational impact in our classrooms as it has in almost every other aspect of our lives.
  • We will support teachers in identifying the benefits of using technology to improve pupil learning and promote good and future models of effective learning and teaching.
  • We will promote increased innovation by teachers and learners in classroom practice, particularly where it leads to increased achievement by learners.
  • We will promote increased sharing and collaboration amongst teachers to develop themselves as learners, for the betterment of their students.

To deepen parental engagement

  • We recognise that technology can provide a catalyst and a mechanism for improving parental engagement and actively encourage the use of social technology to communicate better with parents and to share pupils’ work and achievements.
  • We will aim to increase the amount of communication between schools and home and this will ultimately increase involvement of parents in their child’s learning.

To strengthen our position on hardware and associated infrastructure

  • We aim to do things differently by taking a more exciting and imaginative approach.
  • We will open up access in schools to personal devices, increasing the connectivity and the number of devices in use in schools and, at the same time, reducing the cost of the maintenance of devices.
  • We will utilise the variety of free tools and open source services that already exist on the web, reducing the cost of centrally procured or managed services.
