Groovy Gardeners

Groovy Gardeners

We are a group of P4-7 pupils who, along with Mrs Sharp and the wonderful volunteers from the school “Tub Team”,  are interested in developing and using our grounds to:

to grow fruit and vegetables

-to encourage biodiversity in our grounds

-to support and advise all stages about the plants and growing requirements for their tubs.

So far we have braved all weathers in  autumn/winter tidy ups of the eco garden and prepared our tubs and planters for new spring planting.   Marion Sutherland from RHET visited and helped us debate possible fruits and vegetables for the garden . We have researched and created a table with the  preferred fruits and vegetables and planting and harvesting dates. Based on this work we have Newton’s first ever annual planting cycle plan! Our potatoes have been planted. Further planting scheduled for April and May!

We have not forgotten our commitment to biodiversity and we are gathering resources for a bug hotel. We feed the birds regularly and recently made a supply of bird feed balls to hang in the garden. The birds love them! We are also  keen to raise funds for a new bird bath. Watch this space!

All stages have been asked to choose a theme for their tub and we are bringing on annuals to help brighten the school tubs around our school front door.

The grounds are such an important element of our school’s commitment to the environment and a sustainable future and  the Groovy Gardeners are rising to the challenge!
