Digital Leaders

Digital Legends

The Digital Legends are a group of P4-7 digital leaders supported by Mrs Spence.  The aim of the Digital Legends group is to develop the safe use of digital technology in our school to enhance learning.

To do this we agreed to undertake these actions:

  1. Upskill pupils in the use of digital tools and apps to support learning.
  2. Ensure everyone at Newton Primary is safe online and is using the internet responsibly.
  3. Share class news and updates through the use of digital technology.

Within the group pupils separated into three sub groups, choosing an area they were most interested in:

  • Digital Experts
  • Internet Safety
  • Digital Journalists

So far this year the Digital Legends have:

  • Explored the use of voice typing tools on the laptops and chromebooks to help pupils with extended writing. Pupils created easy to follow instructions on how to use and access the “voice typing” tool on Google Docs.
  • In preparation for Safer Internet Day 2020 the group discussed internet safety and completed a range of activities related to Safer Internet Day. We had lots of great discussions and shared tips for staying safe online.

  • Planned and organised presentations for Safer Internet Day 2020. Pupils helped to create presentations focusing on internet safety and this year’s theme of “Online Identity.” They delivered short presentations to all classes on Safer Internet Day in February. The Digital Legends shared their tips for staying safe online. On this day they also launched a “Design an Avatar” competition where pupils had the opportunity to design a digital character (avatar) to represent Newton Primary School.

  • Created an ICT Safe Use Guide for the whole school. Pupils discussed and brainstormed ideas around using ICT safely in school. They thought about how to look after our ICT equipment and also how we can make sure everyone is using the equipment responsibly. The Digital Legends also began to design artwork and graphics to go along with the guide.
  • Over the past few weeks the Digital Legends have been working on ideas for the Childsnet Film Competition. This is a competition all about young people creating a one-minute film about internet safety. Groups have been planning and casting their films. We have had lots of amazing and creative ideas.

A huge thank you to the Digital Legends group for all their hard work so far!

Newton Tech Team

The Newton Tech Team are a group of P4-7 digital leaders supported by Miss Guthrie.  The aim of the Tech Team group is to support the learning and development of digital skills across our school community.

To do this we agreed to undertake these actions:

  1. Upskill pupils, staff and parents in the use of digital tools and apps to support learning.
  2. Plan school events to promote digital learning across the school community.
  3. Plan and organise fundraisers to support the purchase of resources to enhance digital learning opportunities in school.

Within the group pupils separated into three sub groups, choosing an area they were most interested in:

  • Digital Events Team
  • Digital Fundraisers
  • Digital Experts

So far this year the Newton Tech Team have:

  • Started to create a series of visual guides and video tutorials about how to access the apps we use most often in school, such as Google Classroom, Google Drive, Glow, Sumdog etc. These guides are intended to support pupils, staff and parents, particularly when accessing at home. Some of our videos are available on the ‘Digital Information’ tab on our school website for you to have a look at!
  • Created a wish list of digital resources that the Tech Team feel we could invest in as a school to support digital learning and teaching.
  • Have discussed how to look after the digital devices in our school properly and have each taken responsibility for ensuring all devices are plugged in after use in our own classes.

We are also in the process of planning and organising events for Digital Learning Week 2020, which takes place on the 11th-15th  May. So far we have been:

  • Creating posters to advertise the week.
  • Designing PowerPoints to share information with all classes and to promote the event.
  • Creating whole school competitions, fundraiser and a homework challenge to run during the week.
  • Writing emails to share our plans with school staff and parents. We aim to invite parents who work with digital technology into school to discuss this with pupils – promoting digital career pathways for our learners.
  • Exploring new apps/websites that each year group can try out in their classes during the course of the week.
  • Learning about and tinkering with the new BBC Microbits we now have in school to support the development of coding skills. The aim is for the Tech Team to launch these during the week and have opportunities to teach classes and their teachers about how to use and look after them.

A huge thank you to the Newton Tech Team group for all their hard work so far!
