Whether it\u2019s board games, card games, or word games, play offers rich opportunities for children to develop important thinking skills, boost their resilience, and build a positive attitude towards problem solving \u2014 all while having fun together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>CARD GAMES<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Make 10<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Setup:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Use a standard deck of cards and remove all face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings). Aces count as 1. You will be left with number cards 1\u201310 in four suits. Shuffle the cards and lay them face up in a grid (e.g., 4&#215;10 or whatever fits your space).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dealing:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> No traditional dealing is needed. The entire deck (minus face cards) is placed face up in a visible grid on the table.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Playing:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Players take turns finding and removing pairs of cards that add up to exactly 10 (e.g., 6 + 4, 7 + 3, 1 + 9). Each player removes one valid pair per turn. Some versions allow more than two cards to be combined if they total 10.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Winning:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The player who collects the most valid pairs (or total cards) by the end of the game wins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Tiebreaker:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If two players have the same number of cards, play a sudden-death round with a smaller set of cards. The first player to find a correct pair wins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b style=\"font-size: 1.14286rem\">Game End: <\/b>The game ends when no more valid pairs that make 10 can be found in the grid. Remove Jokers. The goal is to collect sets of four cards of the same rank (e.g. four 7s). Ideal for 2\u20136 players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dealing:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Shuffle the deck and deal:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">7 cards each if 2\u20133 players<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 cards each if 4+ players<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Place the remaining cards face down in a draw pile in the center.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Playing:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Players take turns in clockwise order. On your turn:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask another player for a specific rank (e.g., \u201cDo you have any 6s?\u201d). You must already have at least one card of that rank.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the player has any cards of that rank, they must give <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of them to you. You get another turn.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If they do not have any, they say \u201cGo fish,\u201d and you draw a card from the pile.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you draw the rank you asked for, show it and take another turn.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If not, your turn ends.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> When you collect four of a kind, place the set face-up in front of you.<\/span><b>Winning:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The player with the most sets of four at the end of the game wins.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tiebreaker:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If two players have the same number of sets at the end, they share the win or play a quick \u201csudden death\u201d round using a small pile to break the tie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Game End:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The game ends when all 13 sets of four have been collected, or when no cards remain and no one can make further moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Shut the Box<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Setup:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Use number cards 1\u20139 (you can remove other cards from a standard deck or create your own). Lay the cards face up in a row in numerical order in front of each player. You\u2019ll also need two dice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dealing:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> There\u2019s no traditional dealing. Each player starts with their own full set of cards numbered 1 to 9 laid face up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Playing:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> On your turn, roll two dice and calculate the total. (if you don\u2019t have a dice, just label pieces of paper and pop them in a bowl)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You must then \u201cshut\u201d (turn face down or remove) one or more cards that <\/span><b>add up exactly to the total rolled<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> For example, if you roll a 9, you could shut just the 9, or 4 + 5, or 2 + 3 + 4.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Continue rolling and shutting cards as long as you can make valid combinations.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you cannot match the roll with the remaining cards, your turn ends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Winning:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you manage to shut all the cards (1\u20139), you&#8217;ve &#8220;shut the box&#8221; \u2014 a perfect round!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In a multi-player game, the winner is the player with the <\/span><b>lowest total of remaining face-up cards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after each has had a turn.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Tiebreaker:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If players are tied with the same total, they each take one more turn. The player who shuts the most cards in the tiebreaker wins.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Game End:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Play can be a single round, or multiple rounds with scores tracked over time. The player with the <\/span><b>lowest overall score<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after the agreed number of rounds is the winner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>WORD GAMES<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Number Tennis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Serve a \u2018number\u2019 under 100. Your partner must return the serve by responding with the number that would make your total 100, within a strict 5 second time limit. e.g. 1) serve \u201c45\u201d 2) responds \u201c55\u201d. Variations: 5, 10, 20, 1000, 1 (0.3 served \/ 0.7 responded)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit\">Gimme 5\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Give your partner a start number and ask them to count backwards or forwards. They must say the next 5 numbers in the sequence. If the manage it they get a \u2018high 5\u2019. You can make it more challenging by varying the jumps .e.g. count backwards from 55 in 6s.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit\">Yes\/No Game<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Think of a number and keep it to yourself. Your partner will then ask questions to work out what it is. e.g. \u201cIs it an even number?\u201d, &#8220;is it smaller than 20?&#8221;,, \u201cIs it a multiple of 5?\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rock, Paper\u2026 Add!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Like \u2018Rock, Paper, Scissors\u2019 you hide your hand behind your back, call together \u20181,2,3 \u2013 show\u2019 but the difference is you reveal both your hands holding 0-10 fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Multiply the number of fingers on each hand and call the answer. The player to call the correct answer first wins the point.<\/p>\n<p><em>Variation \u2013 each finger to represent another value. E.g 1 finger = 10 instead of 1. <\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Unlucky 13<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Count to 13 without landing on 13! You can say a maximum of 3 numbers in a row in each go. If you have to say 13 a point goes to the other players. This game is more about strategy and mathematical thinking than counting.<\/p>\n<p><em>Variations \u2013 count backwards to 0, count up to a higher number, use a different number sequence (e.g. Fibonacci, primer number, multiples of 5, etc). <\/em><\/p>\n<p>E.g.<\/p>\n<p>Person A: 1, 2<\/p>\n<p>Person B: 3, 4, 5<\/p>\n<p>A: 6<\/p>\n<p>B: 7, 8, 9<\/p>\n<p>A: 10. 11, 12<\/p>\n<p>B: 13!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>I have a secret rule<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Think of a rule such as \u2018odd numbers over 20\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Your partner list suggestions to see if they can figure out your rule.<\/p>\n<p>E.g.<\/p>\n<p>A: I have a rule.<\/p>\n<p>B: does 50 meet you rule?<\/p>\n<p>A: no<\/p>\n<p>B:13<\/p>\n<p>A: yes<\/p>\n<p>Etc.<\/p>\n<p><em>Variations \u2013 use 2D or 3D shape names. E.g. rule is the shape has more than 3 corners. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Maths Bot<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Choose a rule such as \u2018double and add one\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Your partner gives you a number e.g. 3 and you respond (in your best robot voice) with their number after it\u2019s been through the Maths Bot &#8211; \u00a07.<\/p>\n<p>Keep going until they guess your rule.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>20 Questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Choose a number 1-100.<\/p>\n<p>Your partner asks a maximum of questions to discover the number.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A: is your number even<\/li>\n<li>B: yes<\/li>\n<li>A: is it in the 4 times-table?<\/li>\n<li>B: no<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Etc.<\/p>\n<p><em>Variation: agree to use decimal numbers to 2 decimal places or use prime numbers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Number of the Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Choose today\u2019s number (whole number or decimal).<\/p>\n<p>Make up 5 challenges for your partner.<\/p>\n<p>E.g. double today\u2019s number \/ add your age to today\u2019s number \/ subtract your age from today\u2019s number \/ multiply it by yesterday\u2019s number \/ multiply today\u2019s number by 10\/ etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/cambusbarronps\/2017\/09\/14\/number-of-the-day\/\">Click here for a list of ideas!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bake or cook<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With adult supervision\/help do some baking or cooking. You will need to measure and weigh out ingredients carefully to use your maths skills. Keep an eye on the time to make sure it doesn\u2019t burn!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Build a den<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Set den challenges for each other with a maths twist.<\/p>\n<p>E.g. build a den with a perimeter bigger than a sofa cushion, use a triangle in your den structure, the door must be larger than 6 handspans.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Plan a party<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You have a budget of \u00a3200 to plan a party (birthday, Christmas, paddling pool party\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Think about: food, drinks, entertainment, party bag, activities, decorations, how many people you\u2019re inviting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How much is your name?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A=1, B=2 \u2026 Y=25, Z=26<\/p>\n<p>How much is your first name? Last name? Full name? Who has the highest scoring name in your family? What\u2019s the highest scoring 3 letter name you can find? What\u2019s the lowest scoring name you can find?<\/p>\n<p><em>Variations \u2013 use animals, food, cars, football club names, etc. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>I-spy <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I-spy with a maths twist.<\/p>\n<p>E.g. \u00a0I spy with my little eye something bigger than 2 meters\/ I spy something cylinder shaped \/ I spy something that\u2019s heavier than me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Place your bets (but don\u2019t actually bet anything!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With a partner, estimate different challenges and then see who\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A: I think it will be 50 steps from the living room to the bathroom<\/li>\n<li>B: I think it\u2019s on 39 steps.<\/li>\n<li>Then do the steps together to see who\u2019s closest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>E.g. I think it will take\u00a0 20 mugs of water to fill the sink basin \/ I think it will take 20 seconds to do 25 star jumps<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Crazy Problems<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ask a partner a crazy maths question and solve the problem together (possibly with a calculator- thinking and talking that helps your brain in this one).<\/p>\n<p>E.g how old am I in months? Weeks? days?! hours?!! What\u2019s my height in sheets of paper?
