At Cambusbarron Primary we have four Houses, Polmaise, Hayford , Bruce and Grierson. House Captains are role models and take responsibility for assisting the staff team, monitoring lines and holding House Meetings. We elect House captains twice a year. All of our P7’s are House Leaders and it is their role to support our Captains.
In the fourth term of each year we hold our Sports day. In the morning we hold a House Sports Challenge. Where possible we ask learners to wear of T-shirt showing their house colours.
Our House System helps to develop leadership skills amongst our senior learners as they have responsibility for leading House Meetings and deciding on the House approach for challenges. Each House is supported by a number of staff.
Bruce 💛
This House is names after Bruce’s Well. On the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn, King Robert the Bruce is said to have taken sacrament at the site of Cambusbarron Chapel. He also drank from the chapel well, which was reputed to bring health and good fortune. The Abbott of Inchaffrey accompanied Bruce and took holy water away with him to bless the Scottish army before battle, sprinkling it onto the battlefield. Because of the great victory, it became known as Bruce’s Well.
Our current Bruce House Captains are Georgia and Botond. They will be supported by Mr Brown and Mr Hill.
This year Bruce House are responsible for re-imagining what ‘Goldentime’ could look like. Traditionally this is the last hour on a Friday where children have time to engage in free play. Bruce House will be working with all of our pupils and staff to make sure this is the best it could be.
Grierson ❤️
This House is named after John Grierson who was born on the 26th April 1898 and grew up in Cambusbarron. In later life John studied philosophy at Glasgow University, but was drawn into film-making. John was a prolific film maker, director and producer and is well known for his ground-breaking documentary work on the Scottish herring fleet, Drifters, which had its premiere in 1929. John Grierson is called ‘the father of documentaries’. Mr Grierson’s Dad was even the headmaster at Cambusbarron Primary .
Our current Grierson House Captains are Amelia and Rose. They will be supported by Mr Hill.
This year Grierson’s action plan is focused on improving the school grounds for our children. Grierson will support the school to explore ‘open ended’ resources and work with the children to improve opportunities for play in the playground. They will also explore the possibility of moving the P1 fence to increase the greenspace available to our P1 children.
Hayford💙
Hayford House is names after the Hayford Mill which was built in Cambusbarron in 1834. Hayford Mill expanded to become one of the largest factories in Stirlingshire, and at one stage the largest tweed manufactory under one roof in Scotland. In 1871 the factory was further enlarged and over 1200 people were then employed. Hayford Mill closed on October 19th, 1896 but the building has been used for many purposes. The building still stands today and has been converted into homes.
Our current Hayford House Captains are Logan and Isla. They will be supported by Ms Vass.
This year Hayford’s responsibilities are focused on Outdoor Learning. This includes working with children and staff to support more outdoor experiences. This also includes identifying and collecting resources, promoting the RSPB Big Birdwatch and working with our Green Beans to improve wildlife diversity on the school grounds.
Polmaise 💚
Polmaise House is named after Polmaise Castle which was situated on Gillies Hill near our school. The ruined Polmaise Castle was built for £30,000 by Col. John Murray, 23rd Laird of Touchadam and Polmaise, upon his return from the Crimean War. Murray commissioned David Burn to design the Scots Baronial mansion in 1865. The building was demolished in 1966 long after the death of the Murray’s only son and heir in The Great War. Although ruins only remain this is still a great areas for walking in.
Our current Polmaise House Captains are Chloe and Taylor. They will be supported by Mrs Smith.
This year Polmaise will be looking at our school community and sharing how to recognise bullying and what we can all do to support anyone who feels they are being bullied. They will also be working to raise the profile of Start Up Stirling and encouraging donations to this worthwhile charity.
