House System

Our House System is designed to embody the values and ethos of the school and is an integral part of our school community. It is our ambition that the House System will enable our pupils to have a stronger voice in decision-making across the school. All Primary 7 children are House Leaders and as such are role models who demonstrate “The Braehead Way.” This is done through living our values. At Braehead we are:

RESPECTFUL, INCLUSIVE, SAFE and KIND.

Objectives of the House System

Our objective is to give every child in each house:

  • A sense of belonging
  • Positive role models from within their peer group
  • A sense of achievement outside the classroom
  • Fun and excitement through competition
  • Curiosity and creativity
  • Leadership experiences
  • Individual and collective responsibility
  • The confidence to take action and get things done
  • Develop communication skills, learn to be flexible and resilient
  • To know they are agents of change within the school
  • To know they are agents of change within their wider community

Allocation to Houses

As soon as children arrive at Braehead Primary they are allocated to one of our four Houses. Each class in the school has children representing each House.  Being a member of a House group encouraging teamwork aiming for the success of the House in all challenges, activities and competition. Staff members are also allocated to a House and should attend all meetings, demonstrating unity.

The House names are inspired by Scotland and the legacy of bold leaders, with particular emphasis on local history; Bruce (green), Canmore (yellow), Stuart (red) and Wallace (blue). House Captains have responsibility to share stories with their House teams about Robert the Bruce, Malcolm III of Scotland (nicknamed Canmore), Clan Stewart (rulers of Scotland from 1371 to 1603) and William Wallace (local legend and national hero) These inspire the children to demonstrate the same attributes and qualities as their namesakes.

House Points

Students in each House strive to earn as many House points as they can to support their House.  Students can earn these points through demonstrating our school values at all times throughout the school day, for class effort, good manners and representing our school with pride.  Our House Points are plastic tokens matching the 4 House colours.  If a child is awarded a token, they place it in the collection box.  There are collection boxes in each wing of the school and also in the Dinner Hall.  Each token is worth 1 point and children can only be presented with one token at a time. For extra special effort or achievement a child can be awarded a golden token from members of the SMT.  This golden token is worth triple points.  Each week, House Captains will empty the collection boxes and count the tokens.  The weekly scores will then be displayed on the House Board.  The winning house will receive an extra break.  At the end of the year the House Cup is awarded to the winning House overall who will receive an extra treat to celebrate.

House Meetings

Regular House Meetings will be coordinated by Mr Lee and Miss Light (House Coordinators) who will liaise with House Leaders to foster a team approach to following our values.  Each House will vote for a House Captain and two ViceCaptains.  These pupils will lead the House Meetings with support from staff members. One member of staff in each House will be chosen as Staff Leader and it is their responsibility to work with the Captains/Vice Captains during the meeting to ensure focus and productivity.  There will be one large House event every term which will be planned and presented by this group of wider House Leaders.  Each House will also have a focus for the year related to our School Values. House Captains have to write an action plan for what they hope to achieve.  Captains will present updates on this action plan during assemblies.

  • Bruce House will take responsibility for ensuring pupils in Braehead are RESPECTFUL. This will include promoting reading.
  • Canmore House will take responsibility for ensuring pupils in Braehead are INCLUSIVE. This will include considering Eco priorities.
  • Stuart House will take responsibility for ensuring pupils in Braehead are SAFE which includes considering Community links.
  • Wallace House will take responsibility for ensuring pupils in Braehead are KIND by leading Sport and HWB.

Celebrating Success

Wider achievements are shared with class teachers who then note these in the appropriate House Achievement Jotter.  House Leaders then share these achievements with the wider House team during meetings.  The House then votes on who should be presented with a Leading Light Award at assembly. These pupils will be presented with a certificate and invited to join SMT for a celebration.  House Captains will present these awards at assembly in recognition of their pride in their House members.
