{"id":3472,"date":"2020-12-21T13:44:07","date_gmt":"2020-12-21T13:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/balfronhssupport\/?page_id=3472"},"modified":"2020-12-21T17:07:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-21T17:07:21","slug":"how-to-use-reciprocal-reading","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/balfronhssupport\/how-to-use-reciprocal-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"How to use Reciprocal Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before Reciprocal Teaching can be used successfully by your students, they need to have been taught and had time to practice the four strategies that are used in reciprocal teaching (summarising, questioning, predicting, clarifying).<\/p>\n<p>One way to get students prepared to use reciprocal teaching:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Put students in groups of four.<\/li>\n<li>Distribute one note card to each member of the group identifying each person&#8217;s unique role:\n<ul>\n<li>Summariser<\/li>\n<li>Questioner<\/li>\n<li>Clarifier<\/li>\n<li>Predictor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have students read a few paragraphs of the assigned text selection. Encourage them to use note-taking strategies such as selective underlining or sticky-notes to help them better prepare for their role in the discussion.<\/li>\n<li>At the given stopping point, the Summariser will highlight the key ideas up to this point in the reading.<\/li>\n<li>The Questioner will then pose questions about the selection:\n<ul>\n<li>Unclear parts<\/li>\n<li>Puzzling information<\/li>\n<li>Connections to other concepts already learned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<em>Clarifier<\/em>\u00a0will address confusing parts and attempt to answer the questions that were just posed.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<em>Predictor<\/em>\u00a0can offer predictions about what the author will tell the group next or, if it&#8217;s a literary selection, the predictor might suggest what the next events in the story will be.<\/li>\n<li>The roles in the group then switch one person to the right, and the next selection is read. Students repeat the process using their new roles. This continues until the entire selection is read.
