{"id":3331,"date":"2020-05-05T13:58:10","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T13:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/balfronhssupport\/?page_id=3331"},"modified":"2020-05-05T14:07:44","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T14:07:44","slug":"diagnosing-spina-bifida","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/balfronhssupport\/diagnosing-spina-bifida\/","title":{"rendered":"Diagnosing Spina Bifida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spina bifida is often detected during\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/pregnancy-and-baby\/20-week-scan\/\">mid-pregnancy anomaly scan<\/a>, which\u00a0is offered to all pregnant women\u00a0between 18\u00a0and 21 weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>If tests confirm that your baby has spina bifida, the implications will be discussed with you.<\/p>\n<p>This will include a discussion about the possible problems associated with the condition, the treatment and support your child may need if you decide to continue with the pregnancy, and what your options are regarding ending the pregnancy, if that&#8217;s your choice.<\/p>\n<h3>Tests after birth<\/h3>\n<p>Once the baby is born,\u00a0a number of tests may be carried out to find out how bad the condition is and help decide which treatments are likely to be the best option.<\/p>\n<p>Tests may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>monitoring your child&#8217;s head growth and carrying out a brain scan, using an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/ultrasound-scan\/\">ultrasound scan<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/ct-scan\/\">CT scan<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/mri-scan\/\">MRI scan<\/a>, to check for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/hydrocephalus\/\">hydrocephalus<\/a>\u00a0(excess fluid on the brain)<\/li>\n<li>ultrasound scans of the bladder and kidneys to check whether your baby stores their pee normally<\/li>\n<li>an assessment of your baby&#8217;s movements to check for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/paralysis\/\">paralysis<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Surgery to repair the spine will usually be recommended soon after your baby is born.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spina bifida is often detected during\u00a0the\u00a0mid-pregnancy anomaly scan, which\u00a0is offered to all pregnant women\u00a0between 18\u00a0and 21 weeks of pregnancy.
