{"id":33,"date":"2016-02-17T09:43:34","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T09:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/balfronhscreativearts\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2018-11-29T14:56:26","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T14:56:26","slug":"national-5-music","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/st\/balfronhscreativearts\/creative-arts\/music\/national-5-music\/","title":{"rendered":"National 5 Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>National 4 and 5 Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brief Course Outline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course option consists of three units:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performing Skills (60 marks &#8211; scaled to 50% at Nat 5)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Play two instruments, or one instrument and voice.<\/li>\n<li>Perform at least 2 pieces on each instrument.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Perform a programme of pieces, 8 minutes in total, between the\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0two instruments.<\/li>\n<li>Perform at least 2 minutes on one instrument.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>N4 is equivalent to ABRSM Grade 2.<br \/>\nN5 is equivalent to ABRSM Grade 3.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Composing Skills (30 marks scaled to 15% at Nat 5)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding how a range of compositional methods and\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 music concepts are used by composers and the influences on\u00a0 \u00a0 their work<\/li>\n<li>Experimenting and using music concepts and compositional methods in creative ways to develop refine and create original music<\/li>\n<li>Developing musical ideas which make musical sense and realise their creative intentions<\/li>\n<li>Self-reflecting on their music and their creative choices and decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Understanding Music (40 marks &#8211; scaled to 35% at Nat 5)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Listen to music from a variety of musical styles.<\/li>\n<li>Identify and distinguishing between level-specific music concepts, as well as music signs and symbols used in music notation.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying and analysing the social and cultural influences which have influenced the distinctive sounds and structure of specific music styles<\/li>\n<li>Question paper based on recorded excerpts of music and musical literacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Entry requirements<br \/>\n<\/strong>Appropriate experience of playing two instruments, or one instrument and voice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assessments<br \/>\n<\/strong>At National 4 all three units are internally assessed.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>At National 5:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Performing is externally assessed.<\/strong> Candidates will perform their full programme to a Visiting Assessor around February\/March. 30 marks are available for each instrument.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composing Skills is externally assessed<\/strong>. Candidates will use composing skills developed in S3 to create their own short composition, with accompanying detailed evaluation.
