Senior Phase Information Evening 2016 – Some FAQs

1 What is a NAB?

A NAB was an internal assessment that was done by a pupil, usually at the end of each unit of work.  NABs do not exist anymore.  They are now called Unit Assessments, and are still done internally.

2 Which subjects do NOT have a written exam?

The following subjects have no exam;

All N3 and N4 courses
N5 Energy
N5 PE
N5 Practical Woodwork
N5 Practical Metal work
N5 Hospitality
NPA 4/5 Enterprise and Employability
Sustainability Leaders
PE Sports Leaders
H Photography
AH Art and Design
Work Experience
ECDL

3 Why are prelims important?

Prelims happen in the last 2 weeks of January.  This gives pupils the opportunity to sit the exam paper under exam conditions, often in the theatre but sometimes in classrooms.

The prelim allows pupils and the teacher to see where the pupil is doing well, and where there are areas for improvement.  After the prelims there is an S4 report and an S5/6 parents evening.

The prelim grade along with any other assessment done under exam conditions is used to determine the estimate grade.  This is the grade that is sent to the SQA at the end of March and is used by the SQA if there is the need for exceptional circumstances and also for remarks.
