Riddle of the Week

Well done to everyone who told me the correct answer to last week’s Riddle:

A new clothing store has a unique method of pricing items. A vest costs £20, a tie costs £15, a blouse costs £30, and a scarf costs £25. How much would a pinafore cost?

The correct answer was ‘£40 – the pricing method is £5 per letter of the item’s name’.

This week’s riddle is:

It’s raining at midnight, but the forecast for tomorrow and the next day is clear. Will there be sunny weather in 48 hours?

A house point to every pupil who shares the correct answer with Mr. Clark.

Can your child solve it without parental help or googling it?

Thank you for your continued support. Please get in touch via the school office if I can assist in any way.

Kind regards

Mr. Clark

Week Beginning Monday 12th September 2022

Welcome to the Head Teacher’s blog for the week beginning Monday 12th September 2022.

As we start to see more autumnal weather and some heavy rain showers (especially at 3pm it seems!), it is important that all children come to school with a suitable outdoor jacket for our unpredictable weather.

Queen Elizabeth II

All at Woodhead Primary School and Nursery Class were saddened to hear the news on Thursday of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

On Friday, we held a short assembly to reflect on her 70 years of service and to show our respect with a minute’s silence.

Just last week, we took receipt of a free book for each child in P1-7 as a memento of her Platinum Jubilee year.  We have decided to still issue these to the children and they will be sent home next week.  In the circumstances, I’m sure many children will appreciate this special memento.

School and Nursery Photographs

Maze Photography will be in school on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th September 2022 to take Nursery and School photographs.

Please note the following arrangements:

  • All children will have an individual photograph and a family photograph (siblings currently in Nursery to P7 at Woodhead only).
  • On Wednesday, we will start with the Nursery and work through as many classes as possible (one class at a time).
  • Older siblings will have their family photographs taken when the   younger siblings’ class is at the photographer.
  • Children should come to school in full school uniform.  PE will not go ahead for any classes before their photographs are taken.
  • If PE takes place after a class have had their photographs, the teacher will plan a lesson which does not require PE kit.
  • Once we receive the proofs from the photographer, these will be sent home.  There is no obligation to buy.   The school receives a percentage of all sales in commission.

Flu Immunisation Forms

If you have not done so already, please return Flu Immunisation forms as soon as possible.  Only children for whom we have received permission will receive their immunisation.

Head Teacher

Week Beginning Monday 5th September 2022

Welcome to this week’s Head Teacher’s Blog.  I hope you have had a lovely weekend, despite the changing weather.

On Friday afternoon, we had a whole school assembly.  It was Primary 1’s first time at assembly and they sat beautifully throughout.  We enjoyed singing together and celebrated our special awards and achievements.

Pupils in Primary 7 launched their ‘Reading for Pleasure’ campaign and showcased posters they have made to go around the school to promote reading for pleasure.

It was a real treat to have everyone together and I was very impressed with the confidence of the Primary 7 children who spoke in front of the whole school.

Industrial Action

Following suspension of industrial action on Friday evening, South Lanarkshire have confirmed all schools and nurseries are expected to open as normal next week.

Parent Council and PTA AGM

The PC and PTA AGM will take place on Tuesday 6th September 2022 at 6.45pm.  This meeting was intended to take place via Zoom due to the proposed industrial action.

It will be confirmed on Monday 5th Sep if it is possible for this meeting to take place in person.

SLT Drop-In

The first drop-in session to chat with a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) will take place on Monday 12th September 2022 between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

The purpose of these drop-ins is to allow parents/carers an opportunity to speak with a member of the leadership team in an informal setting.

It is an opportunity to get advice and support with areas such as:

  • Home Learning
  • IT Support e.g. Google Classroom
  • Supporting your child with anxiety/worry.
  • General Curriculum questions

It is not an opportunity to get an update on your child’s progress or to raise a concern/complaint.

Our YFLC Officer, Caroline Stewart, will also be on hand to offer advice on matters such as:

  • parenting support
  • money and finance matters
  • access to community groups and support
  • helping your child with anxiety/stress/worry etc.

To give us an idea of uptake, please complete this Google Form if you would like to come along to the drop-in.

https://forms.gle/PqnJmj2Qx8K4ywAH7

Please note, due to the nature of a drop-in session, parents/carers will be seen on a first-come/first-served basis.

Painting Shirts

Miss Martin is looking for some old adult shirt to use as painting smocks.  If you have anything suitable that you no longer need, please hand these into the school office.

Participatory Budget

Participatory Budget (PB) is the process in which parents/carers and pupils can be involved in making decisions about how a percentage of our Pupil Equity Fund can be spent.  Mrs. Keltie is our PB lead.  She sent home a leaflet last week for parents/carers to express an interest in becoming part of a PB Focus Group:
If you are interested in becoming part of this group, please return the form by Friday 9th September 2022 or email the school office on gw14woodheadpsoffice@glow.sch.uk

YFCL Officer

Our Youth Family and Community Learning Officer (YFCL), Caroline will be organising parental workshops and family learning opportunities  this year.

We are keen to ensure the topics and themes of these are relevant and suitable for our community and we seek your views on these.

Caroline has created a short questionnaire for parents/carers to allow her to gather this information.  We’d be grateful if you could complete this by Friday 9th September 2022

https://forms.office.com/r/eQnmPKEwnc

Two opportunities for parents/carers to attend workshops begin this month.  Look out for a flyer coming home this week:

Head Teacher

Week Beginning Monday 22nd August 2022

Welcome to the first Head Teacher’s Blog.

This will be updated at the beginning of each week, and will replace the monthly school newsletters, providing more frequent information about the school, details of what’s on for the coming weeks, links to the lunch menus and other important reminders.

I hope you find it useful.

Mr. Clark

First Week of Term

It’s been a wonderful first week back at school.  Everyone looked so smart in their school uniforms and it was lovely to hear the chatter and laughter as the children caught up with their friends and teachers after the holiday.  For those parents who were able to join us in the playground on Wednesday, I’m sure you’ll agree it was lovely to see the children lining up so well, eager to get inside and start the new year.

The new Primary 1 children have been amazing and are adapting to the routines of school so quickly.  We were very impressed with their lines on Thursday morning for their first full day in school.  Both Mrs. Arthur and Mrs. Mitchell have commented on how pleased they are with the children and how well they are working in class.

The Woodhead Way

This week, we launched ‘The Woodhead Way’ – a simple reminder to our children of our shared expectations of them all.  This sets a high standard of exceptions about ‘how we do things at Woodhead’.

The Woodhead Way - Ready, Respectful, Safe

Our expectations are simple and clear, to encourage all children:

  • to be ready to learn and work hard in class
  • to be respectful of all adults, classmates and other children
  • to be safe in all areas of the school and ensure other children are safe too.

By being ready, respectful and safe, children are recognised with 5 minutes of ‘Reward Time’ each day, which they can enjoy at the end of the week in class.

When children go ‘Over and Above’ in class, this is also recognised and celebrated.  Children who regularly go ‘Over and Above’ will be recognised through our weekly ‘School Values Awards’ and ‘Playground Awards’.

At the end of each month, a pupil from each class will be invited to the ‘Golden Table’ at lunchtime – recognition for going ‘Over and Above’ in our expectations of Ready, Respectful, Safe.

You can find out more about the research behind this approach at https://whentheadultschange.com

Lovely Lines

As part of the Woodhead Way, we expect children to be ready, respectful and safe when lining up to come in to school.

We visibly recognised when the children do this and award the class who goes ‘over and above’ in their lines with an extra playtime.

This week, Primary 3 and Primary 5 went ‘over and above’ to be ready, respectful and safe in their lines and have been recognised with an extra playtime.  Well done!

Flu Immunisation

This will take place on Tuesday 8th November 2022 for P1-7 children.

Permission slips have been received into school from NHS Lanarkshire and should be retuned as soon as possible.

After-School Clubs

We have had a few enquiries about when after-school extra curricular activities will start back.  We hope to begin our programme later in the term.

SLT Drop-in Sessions

This year, we have introduced drop in sessions for parents/carers in the Nursery to P7 to drop-in and have a chat with a member of the school leadership team.  This will take place on the following dates:

  • Monday 12th September 2022 (3.30pm-5.30pm
  • Wednesday 30th November 2022 (3.30pm-5.30pm)
  • Wednesday 1st February 2023 (3.30pm-5.30pm)
  • Tuesday 14th March 2023 (3.30pm-5.30pm)
  • Tuesday 25th April 2023 (3.30pm-5.30pm)

The purpose of these is to allow an opportunity for parents/carers to ask questions they might have, get advice or help with:

  • supporting learning at home.
  • understanding the general Scottish Curriculum for Excellence
  • issues/problems out-with school such as financial matters, school uniform, accessing community resources such as food banks etc.
  • accessing IT resources such as  Google Classroom, Twitter, ParentyPay etc.

It is not an opportunity to get information about your child’s academic progress – this happens in our Parent Teacher consultations.

It is also not an opportunity to raise a concern or complaint or discuss an issue involving another pupil  – we encourage parents/carers to get in touch via the office if they need any help with such an issue.

We will issue a sign-up sheet for any interested parent/carer prior to the first event.
