When Mr Kettlewell first came in to our class he told us we were going to do philosophy.
Philosophy is thinking about all different things. We do it a little different, we read a story and then we ask Mr Kettlewell questions and he picks the best question and then we debate it.
When we first started out not all of us had a clear idea about what philosophy was. At the start there were a few people that didn’t know that they would really like it, but our first session went very well and I am pretty sure most people enjoyed it.
My favourite part of it is debating about the story we have read.

Daniel, hello.
I am really interested that you are doing philosophy with Mr Kettlewell. I work with him at the university and have done philosophy with him. I wonder what was talked about in the philosophical discussion that you found hard to think about.
Claire.
Hi Claire,
Mr Kettlewell told us that he worked with you. We have now moved on to philosodrama which is philosophy and drama mixed together. The discussion I found hard to think about was whether it was right to eat people or not, but I think you should not eat people no matter what the circumstances are. In the discussion some people thought it was ok to eat people if it would help them survive.
What do you find hard about philosophy?
Have a nice day,
Daniel McMahon
Hi Daniel,
Philosophy sounds very interesting. I wonder if you would be able to get a group together and talk about it at assembly?
Mr Gray
Daniel, hello.
I’m sorry that I didn’t reply sooner. I didn’t receive an e-mail to say the blog had been up-dated.
I agree the question about eating people is a hard one. I’d like to think that I wouldn’t eat someone, but I suppose I’d have to think carefully about it if it was a question of survival. Maybe the point for me is that I wouldn’t kill someone to eat them. This might be different to eating them if they died from natural causes or in an accident if we survived an accident. This is a bit gruesome though. I’ll need to give some thought as to what I think the difference is between the two things.
A couple of my favourite topics, and ones that I find hard are around whether we can think without using words and whether there is an end to space. These kinds of questions make my head feel like it’s going to explode!
Happy thinking!
Claire.
