{"id":22,"date":"2026-01-29T12:25:46","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sl\/p62526\/?p=22"},"modified":"2026-01-29T12:25:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:25:46","slug":"p6-class-blog-january-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sl\/p62526\/2026\/01\/29\/p6-class-blog-january-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"P6 Class Blog January 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to our January blog!<\/p>\n<p>This term is a very busy term for Primary 6.\u00a0 We are currently organising our class trip to Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh and will be taking part on a workshop about climate change<\/p>\n<p>We are really excited to have a student\u00a0 teacher starting with us\u00a0 called Miss McQueen.\u00a0 She will be working with us from 2.2.26 &#8211; 21.5.26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Literacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Reading<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are currently the reading The Nowhere Emporium which is about an emporium which appears and disappears.\u00a0 So far we have met the character Daniel Holmes and Spud Harper.\u00a0 We like that the characters are a similar age to us and the story is set in Glasgow.\u00a0 This story is definitely keeping us on our toes as we just never know what is going to happen next!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Writing\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This term we are going to be learning about exposition and explanation writing.\u00a0 We will also be learning about poetry and recently entered a poetry competition all about our hopes and dreams for the future.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Talking and Listening<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As part of our home learning we are currently preparing for our solo talks which are due to take place on <strong>19 February 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Numeracy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sumdog\u00a0 numeracy is an adaptive game based learning platform for children which seeks to boost mathematical fluency and engagement.\u00a0 We have a 45 minute Sumdog session\u00a0 on the chromebooks every week which we are really enjoying.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Marnie has also asked that if possible we try to access\u00a0 Sumdog for 15 minutes 3 times a week as part of home learning.\u00a0 Sumdog logins are available in your our homework jotter but please let the office know if your child requires a copy of their login.<\/p>\n<p>We have been learning about the link between fractions, decimals and percentages.\u00a0 We like it and can see how it all links together but it can be tricky.\u00a0 We can keep practising our times tables to help.<\/p>\n<p>We have been learning about 2d shape and 3d objects.\u00a0 We have been learning about\u00a0 vertices,\u00a0 edges and faces .\u00a0 This week we have been learning about place value. Here is an example\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a048,372 &#8211; 40,000\u00a0 8,000\u00a0 300\u00a0 70\u00a0 2.\u00a0 We have been learning about decimal factions to 1, 2 and even 3 decimal places!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This month\u00a0 the whole school has been learning about Scotland.\u00a0 In P6 we have been learning about Scottish Traditions.\u00a0 \u00a0We learned about the traditions associated with Hogmanay and First Footing.\u00a0 We laughed when we learned that the first foot in your house after the bells at New Year should be a tall dark haired man!\u00a0 We also looked at Scottish national dress, the Edinburgh Tattoo and the tradition of handfasting at weddings.\u00a0 We learned more about Robert Burns and looked and some children recited some of his poetry.\u00a0 Mrs Kelly organised a Burns Supper for us and Ms Cassidy would like to say a huge thank you to Chester for his Address to\u00a0 the Haggis and to Calum for saying the Selkirk Grace before our Burns Supper.\u00a0 A huge thank you also goes to Isla and Olivia for reading the translations for both.<\/p>\n<p>STEM<\/p>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">P6 delved into our senses last term and what it would be like if we were deprived of a given sense. Here&#8217;s a link to a YouTube video showing how they got on:<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><a title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eQi5YUv9F5g\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eQi5YUv9F5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eQi5YUv9F5g<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">We had some great discussions on how we might cope in situations where we were deprived of a sense and how individuals learn to adapt.<\/div>\n<div id=\"x_Signature\" class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">This term we are moving on to forces: What a force is, how we can understand how particular forces work and, most importantly, how this is practically applicable in our daily lives. Over the term we will be working on aerodynamics, reducing friction and improving efficiency &#8211; all of which encompass\u00a0<b>engineering<\/b>,\u00a0<b>design<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>teamwork\u00a0<\/b>skills. Watch this space for future YouTube videos!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8216;We learned about all the organs I liked learning that the heart pumps all the blood around the body&#8217; (Devon).\u00a0 We have also been learning about forces of objects.\u00a0 We dropped lots of different balls from heights and recorded our results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Muir Discovery Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are working towards our John Muir Discovery Award during our outdoor learning sessions.<\/p>\n<p>So far we have investigated how we can keep safe outside, we also looked at plants and flowers which can be dangerous to touch such as giant hogweed.\u00a0 We conducted a winter audit in our curriculum garden and have also built dens for small creatures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like going up to the back bit and enjoyed the\u00a0 outdoor audit because I like spending time in nature. (Enja).\u00a0 We all like doing the John Muir Award as we are learning about new things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Euro Quiz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Euroquiz is an annual project open to all P6 pupils across Scotland, which sees teams of four working together to broaden their knowledge of Europe and the wider world. Subjects covered include languages, history, geography, culture and European affairs. Heats take place in South Lanarkshire in\u00a0 March, with the winning teams from all areas progressing to the National Euroquiz Final in June.<\/p>\n<p>We will be entering a team of 4 into the South Lanarkshire Euro Quiz in March.\u00a0 Olivia, Devon, Eva S and Ollie have kindly put themselves forward for this (with Ava and Sophia taking on roles of substitute team members).\u00a0 Team members will be working with Ms Cassidy and Mrs White over the next few weeks in preparation for the quiz.\u00a0 Good luck everyone!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Football<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mrs Hare continues to coach our football team.\u00a0 We are really enjoying football because we get to play\u00a0 football after school every week and see our friends.\u00a0 \u00a0We enjoy playing against other teams and developing our football and\u00a0 team working skills &#8211; thanks Mrs Hare!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chanter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mrs Kelly arranged a special treat for us when a visitor came in and taught us all about the bagpipes.\u00a0 \u00a0He even played them in the class!
