Primary 6 Blog May 2025<\/a><\/h1>\n

Hello and welcome to the P6 blog.\u00a0 \u00a0This was such an exciting term for us as we had our residential visit to Lockerbie Manor with P7.\u00a0 It was brilliant!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lockerbie<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We had an amazing time at Lockerbie.\u00a0 We spent the whole week outside doing lots of new activities such as abseiling, rifle shooting, archery, high and low ropes, scavenger hunts, survival, orienteering and a really, really muddy obstacle course.\u00a0 We developed lots skills including communication, problem solving and team working skills.<\/p>\n

We stayed in a pod village and were in a pod with our friends.\u00a0 Mrs Kennedy, Ms Cassidy , Mrs Nisbet and Mrs Hare were our neighbours!\u00a0 We had loads of fun with our friends and was like a week long sleepover.\u00a0 \u00a0The food was amazing and the deserts were out of this world especially the caramel shortcake!!!!<\/p>\n

We had lots of different instructors who were really kind and welcoming.\u00a0 They were lots of fun and made us laugh loads especially Blake!<\/p>\n

Activity Week<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We spent the week with Mr Connor and Miss Mackay.\u00a0 On Monday we went on a long walk\u00a0 to Chatelherault Country Park.\u00a0 We saw lots of animals and sneaked into some dens that we found along the way.\u00a0 We did some crochet art and made smoothies\u00a0 with Miss Mackay, We had lots of fun with Lesley, our active schools co-ordinator who taught us all about archery.\u00a0 \u00a0We enjoyed a Peppi Lunch which was delicious.\u00a0 \u00a0We loved the karaoke and movie day.\u00a0 We had popcorn and watched Cinderella. We enjoyed our week together!<\/p>\n

Numeracy<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

This term in numeracy we have been learning about BIDMAS and estimating\u00a0 and rounding.<\/p>\n

BIDMAS is an acronym and stands for Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.\u00a0 \u00a0BIDMAS tells us the order that we should complete calculations.\u00a0 At first this was really tricky but we practised lots and after a little bit of time were able to solve really complex calculations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We have also been learning about estimating and rounding.\u00a0 We have been rounding 4, 5, 6 and bigger numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 100,000,\u00a0 We have been applying our skills to help us solve calculations.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n

We have been learning to estimate numbers on a number line to 1000 and to 1 and 2 decimal places.\u00a0 \u00a0We even know where to place numbers when we have numbers to 1 decimal place and 2 decimal places in the same question!<\/header>\n

\n

Literacy\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We have almost finished our class novel – The Nowhere Emporium.\u00a0 \u00a0We always want to get to the end of the chapters as we can’t wait to find it out what happens next.\u00a0 We HIGHLY recommend you read this book – it is amazing!<\/p>\n

We have been focusing on metalinguistics, inference and figurative language such as similes and metaphors.\u00a0 We have been looking for this within the text and thinking about why the author has used these and the impact that using figurative language has on the reader.<\/p>\n

In writing we have been learning about procedural and exposition writing.\u00a0 We created some writing for the Primary 5 children about how to complete an abseil safely – they will need this when it is their turn to go to Lockerbie.\u00a0 We have also written about Samurai warriors and how a new pope is elected.\u00a0 We will know that a new pope has been elected as we will see white smoke will coming from a small chimney in the Vatican City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Social Studies\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

We have been learning all about Japan.\u00a0 \u00a0Miss Mckay held a Japanese Tea Ceremony for us and we were able to try Matcha for the first time.\u00a0 Some of us loved the Matcha and some of us were not so keen! We have also been learning about Samurai warriors and know\u00a0 that some sadly lost their lives to save others.\u00a0 We were learning about earthquakes and how frequently they happen in Japan.\u00a0 \u00a0As we were learning about this there was an actual earthquake in Myanmar.<\/p>\n

STEM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

With Mr Connor we have been learning about acids and bases.\u00a0 We did an experiment with purple cabbage.\u00a0 We had to cut up the cabbage into tiny pieces and put it in a cup with warm water and we stirred it until the colour of water changed.\u00a0 After that we poured the water into different containers and then we tested some liquids on the cabbage\u00a0 including lemon juice, vinegar and washing powder.\u00a0 These liquids changed the colour of the water.\u00a0 \u00a0We then tested the acidity using PH paper.\u00a0 The colour\u00a0 on the ph paper showed if it was an acid or a base.\u00a0 We loved this experiment!<\/p>\n

PE<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

In PE, we have been working with Miss Mackay to learn how to play Netball. We have been focusing on bounce, chest, and shoulder passes, as well as taking our time to learn the rules of the game. We are just beginning to play small games and are really enjoying it!<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Technology<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For Technologies, we looked at what makes a building stable, as part of our Japan topic, and used junk resources to create our own earthquake proof structures. We tested how these held up and wrote reports on what worked well and what didn\u2019t!<\/p>\n

This term we are looking forward to meeting the new P1s.\u00a0 We can’t wait to be their big buddies and show them how awesome Neilsland Primary is!\u00a0 We have a little surprise planned for our new wee buddies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
