Primary 6 Blog January 2025

Hello and welcome to the P6 January blog.  We had a really busy and fun term 2 and now we are looking forward to all of the exciting things happening in term 3 (especially Lockerbie)!

This blog has been written by Skye, Jacob  L, Noah, Jacob B, Lailah and Jorjia.

Numeracy

We have been learning about negative numbers and took our learning outside.  We measured the temperature on a really cold icy day.  The temperature started at -6 in the morning and went up to 6 degrees then back down to -2 at home time.  Some places in Scotland went down to -20!

We had a teacher in called Mrs Gray . She  worked with on on using multiplication to solve calculations and we worked in our fluid groups.   We did tasks and maths games which was really fun. We really enjoyed our visit from Mrs Gray. THANK YOU MRS GRAY!

Literacy

This term we got a new book called THE NOWHERE EMPORIUM.   It is about a shop that can appear at any time in any city.  We have only read three chapters so far but the book is very interesting and we want to keep reading to find out what happens next.  There are 3 books in the series.

On a Friday we have first chapter Friday where Ms Cassidy reads us the first chapter of a book to see if we think it is a book we might like to read.  Each Friday will be a different book!

This term we will be learning about narrative,  information report writing,  procedural and exposition writing.

Social Studies

In November we did our Victorian Assembly,  We enjoyed dressing up as Victorians and acting as they would have back in Victorian times.  Ms Cassidy, Mr Paterson and Mrs Kelly thought we were outstanding!

We went on a school trip to Summerlee and learned more about the Victorians – we even went down the mines!  We are so glad we don’t need to do that in 2025!

On Tuesday we had a visit from the Scottish Parliament.  We learned all about the Scottish Parliament and the powers it has.  We also took part in a ballot.  We really enjoyed our visit!

This month the whole school is learning about Scotland. We started off by looking at Scottish landscapes and painted our own .   In our class we are learning about Scottish traditions.  We are learning how the Vikings influenced many of the Scottish traditions we have today.  Hopefully  Mrs Kelly will let us have a Burns Supper this month too – fingers crossed!

PE

In PE with Mr Paterson we are doing rounders, we get split into the two teams one team strikes and the other fields.  It is hard to catch the ball. We really like  fielding as the ball can go really high and far or it can go really low it can even some times go behind you. Everyone enjoys it as it  is really good fun.

Last term we were really lucky to have a rugby coach from Hamilton Rugby Club work with us during outdoor PE time.  We learned lots of skills that helped us when playing mini games of rugby.  We loved it!

STEM

With Mr Connor we were learning about gravity.  We got a balloon and a straw then we tied the balloon to the bottom of the straw. Then we blew through the straw and let it go so it would  float up to the ceiling.  We learned that if you tie a straw to the bottom of a balloon when the balloon is not tied it can’t float.

We also learned about light – like how the fastest speed it can go is 300,000km per second. We watched a video where someone was showing us that light could go around the world in a second.

The Christmas Show and Pantomime

In December we did a Christmas show with P4, P5 and P7. The Christmas show was about Christmas through the decades.  We all sang our hearts out and we all loved doing it and all the parents  loved it just as much as we did.  We also had a Pantomime come in – they performed Jack and The Beanstalk.  The actors were so funny  and we all enjoyed it.

Technology

In technology we are doing Code.Org. We have different levels to work through. We learn how to code games, for example move a character in different directions.  We found it really interesting to learn how games work.

Lockerbie Countdown

We are getting so close to going to Lockerbie – we can’t wait.  It is going to be AMAZING! .
