Halloween Fun! Can you spot us?

Numeracy

We now use fluid groups in numeracy and chose a silver, gold or platinum challenge. We are enjoying the change to numeracy and like being able to move between groups depending on how we feel about different areas of numeracy. This term we have been learning about place value, partitioning numbers and rounding, We have also been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages and know this is an important life skill. We have been working on rounding decimals to the nearest tenth and hundredth. We have been using our multiplication and division skills to solve problems and have been multiplying numbers up to 5 digits by by 1 and 2 digit numbers.

Literacy

Our class novel this term is Charlotte’s Web by E B White. The story has so many twists and turns and is definitely keeps us on our toes.. We would recommend it as a good read. Every Friday we do dictation which is where we listen to a dictated sentence and write it down. This helps us to practise our spelling words and sentence structure. We are trying to beat our own score from the previous week. We are enjoying Mrs Brock’s spelling challenges on a Tuesday! As part of our writing we have been focusing on personal and impersonal recounts and description. We watched an animation called Catch It. It was all about meerkats and a single pomegranate. We developed our skills in note taking and then wrote wonderful recounts. We are trying really hard to join our handwriting in all of our written work. In grammar we have been learning about different connectives and trying to use these in our written work to make it even better.

Social Studies

Our topic is Robert Owen, New Lanark and the Victorians. We have been learning how important Robert Owen was and how he wanted to make the lives of working men, women and children better.  We learned how New Lanark was powered by water wheels so we made our own which also generated power! Impressive!

The Victorians built cars and railways and they also opened London zoo. We have been learning that there were poor and rich families that some children had to break the law just to survive. If you were a Victorian child over the age of 10 you might have had to work in coal mines, as a chimney sweep or even in the cotton mill.  Children under 10 in New Lanark went to school. Back then schools were very strict with brutal punishments such as getting the cane if you misbehaved. If you didn’t know your tables you got the dunce’s hat. We are so glad we are not Victorian children.

PE

In PE we have been focusing on fitness and improving our stamina and endurance to develop our skills when playing different sports.  In outdoor PE we have a 4 week block of rugby which is great fun.   At the end of November we have a basketball tournament with St Peter’s Primary so we are looking forward to that.

Over the past 4 weeks we have been working with Lesley, our Active Schools co-ordinator on developing our play leadership skills which will help us plan and deliver games to Primary 1 when we become big buddies next year!

When planning a game, we follow the NEDS acronym

N – name the game

E – explain the game

D – demonstrate the game

S – safety points

Skills Based Workshops

In Mrs Kennedy’s class, we have been looking at budgeting. We had an imaginary budget and we could choose between planning a party with £2,000 pounds or creating a child’s playhouse with £10,000 to spend. In Mr Connor’s class, we have been learning about keeping healthy. We had images of different foods and had to guess how much energy it would give us. We ran on the spot for 60 seconds and saw the different places our heartbeat came from. We also had three hula hoops and each hula hoop meant a different thing -like carbohydrates, protein and fat. In Ms Cassidy’s class we were learning about planning trips including using bus and train timetables. We planned 3 trips . We planned a trip to Nandos and we had to choose our own way of transportation, what we would eat and how much it would cost.

Chef Chebe

Last week we had a visit from Chefe Chebe to help us celebrate Black History Month. We loved it.  He told us stories, taught us how to play the drums and we played a brilliant game with a partner.  We really hope he will come back and visit us again.

Lockerbie Countdown

We are really looking forward to Lockerbie. The countdown is on!
