Primary 6 Class Blog May 2025

Primary 6 Blog May 2025

Hello and welcome to the P6 blog.   This was such an exciting term for us as we had our residential visit to Lockerbie Manor with P7.  It was brilliant!

Lockerbie

We had an amazing time at Lockerbie.  We spent the whole week outside doing lots of new activities such as abseiling, rifle shooting, archery, high and low ropes, scavenger hunts, survival, orienteering and a really, really muddy obstacle course.  We developed lots skills including communication, problem solving and team working skills.

We stayed in a pod village and were in a pod with our friends.  Mrs Kennedy, Ms Cassidy , Mrs Nisbet and Mrs Hare were our neighbours!  We had loads of fun with our friends and was like a week long sleepover.   The food was amazing and the deserts were out of this world especially the caramel shortcake!!!!

We had lots of different instructors who were really kind and welcoming.  They were lots of fun and made us laugh loads especially Blake!

Activity Week

We spent the week with Mr Connor and Miss Mackay.  On Monday we went on a long walk  to Chatelherault Country Park.  We saw lots of animals and sneaked into some dens that we found along the way.  We did some crochet art and made smoothies  with Miss Mackay, We had lots of fun with Lesley, our active schools co-ordinator who taught us all about archery.   We enjoyed a Peppi Lunch which was delicious.   We loved the karaoke and movie day.  We had popcorn and watched Cinderella. We enjoyed our week together!

Numeracy

This term in numeracy we have been learning about BIDMAS and estimating  and rounding.

BIDMAS is an acronym and stands for Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.   BIDMAS tells us the order that we should complete calculations.  At first this was really tricky but we practised lots and after a little bit of time were able to solve really complex calculations.

We have also been learning about estimating and rounding.  We have been rounding 4, 5, 6 and bigger numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 100,000,  We have been applying our skills to help us solve calculations.

We have been learning to estimate numbers on a number line to 1000 and to 1 and 2 decimal places.   We even know where to place numbers when we have numbers to 1 decimal place and 2 decimal places in the same question!

Literacy

We have almost finished our class novel – The Nowhere Emporium.   We always want to get to the end of the chapters as we can’t wait to find it out what happens next.  We HIGHLY recommend you read this book – it is amazing!

We have been focusing on metalinguistics, inference and figurative language such as similes and metaphors.  We have been looking for this within the text and thinking about why the author has used these and the impact that using figurative language has on the reader.

In writing we have been learning about procedural and exposition writing.  We created some writing for the Primary 5 children about how to complete an abseil safely – they will need this when it is their turn to go to Lockerbie.  We have also written about Samurai warriors and how a new pope is elected.  We will know that a new pope has been elected as we will see white smoke will coming from a small chimney in the Vatican City.

Social Studies

We have been learning all about Japan.   Miss Mckay held a Japanese Tea Ceremony for us and we were able to try Matcha for the first time.  Some of us loved the Matcha and some of us were not so keen! We have also been learning about Samurai warriors and know  that some sadly lost their lives to save others.  We were learning about earthquakes and how frequently they happen in Japan.   As we were learning about this there was an actual earthquake in Myanmar.

STEM

With Mr Connor we have been learning about acids and bases.  We did an experiment with purple cabbage.  We had to cut up the cabbage into tiny pieces and put it in a cup with warm water and we stirred it until the colour of water changed.  After that we poured the water into different containers and then we tested some liquids on the cabbage  including lemon juice, vinegar and washing powder.  These liquids changed the colour of the water.   We then tested the acidity using PH paper.  The colour  on the ph paper showed if it was an acid or a base.  We loved this experiment!

PE

In PE, we have been working with Miss Mackay to learn how to play Netball. We have been focusing on bounce, chest, and shoulder passes, as well as taking our time to learn the rules of the game. We are just beginning to play small games and are really enjoying it!

Technology

For Technologies, we looked at what makes a building stable, as part of our Japan topic, and used junk resources to create our own earthquake proof structures. We tested how these held up and wrote reports on what worked well and what didn’t!

This term we are looking forward to meeting the new P1s.  We can’t wait to be their big buddies and show them how awesome Neilsland Primary is!  We have a little surprise planned for our new wee buddies.

Primary 6 Blog January 2025

Hello and welcome to the P6 January blog.  We had a really busy and fun term 2 and now we are looking forward to all of the exciting things happening in term 3 (especially Lockerbie)!

This blog has been written by Skye, Jacob  L, Noah, Jacob B, Lailah and Jorjia.

Numeracy

We have been learning about negative numbers and took our learning outside.  We measured the temperature on a really cold icy day.  The temperature started at -6 in the morning and went up to 6 degrees then back down to -2 at home time.  Some places in Scotland went down to -20!

We had a teacher in called Mrs Gray . She  worked with on on using multiplication to solve calculations and we worked in our fluid groups.   We did tasks and maths games which was really fun. We really enjoyed our visit from Mrs Gray. THANK YOU MRS GRAY!

Literacy

This term we got a new book called THE NOWHERE EMPORIUM.   It is about a shop that can appear at any time in any city.  We have only read three chapters so far but the book is very interesting and we want to keep reading to find out what happens next.  There are 3 books in the series.

On a Friday we have first chapter Friday where Ms Cassidy reads us the first chapter of a book to see if we think it is a book we might like to read.  Each Friday will be a different book!

This term we will be learning about narrative,  information report writing,  procedural and exposition writing.

Social Studies

In November we did our Victorian Assembly,  We enjoyed dressing up as Victorians and acting as they would have back in Victorian times.  Ms Cassidy, Mr Paterson and Mrs Kelly thought we were outstanding!

We went on a school trip to Summerlee and learned more about the Victorians – we even went down the mines!  We are so glad we don’t need to do that in 2025!

On Tuesday we had a visit from the Scottish Parliament.  We learned all about the Scottish Parliament and the powers it has.  We also took part in a ballot.  We really enjoyed our visit!

This month the whole school is learning about Scotland. We started off by looking at Scottish landscapes and painted our own .   In our class we are learning about Scottish traditions.  We are learning how the Vikings influenced many of the Scottish traditions we have today.  Hopefully  Mrs Kelly will let us have a Burns Supper this month too – fingers crossed!

PE

In PE with Mr Paterson we are doing rounders, we get split into the two teams one team strikes and the other fields.  It is hard to catch the ball. We really like  fielding as the ball can go really high and far or it can go really low it can even some times go behind you. Everyone enjoys it as it  is really good fun.

Last term we were really lucky to have a rugby coach from Hamilton Rugby Club work with us during outdoor PE time.  We learned lots of skills that helped us when playing mini games of rugby.  We loved it!

STEM

With Mr Connor we were learning about gravity.  We got a balloon and a straw then we tied the balloon to the bottom of the straw. Then we blew through the straw and let it go so it would  float up to the ceiling.  We learned that if you tie a straw to the bottom of a balloon when the balloon is not tied it can’t float.

We also learned about light – like how the fastest speed it can go is 300,000km per second. We watched a video where someone was showing us that light could go around the world in a second.

The Christmas Show and Pantomime

In December we did a Christmas show with P4, P5 and P7. The Christmas show was about Christmas through the decades.  We all sang our hearts out and we all loved doing it and all the parents  loved it just as much as we did.  We also had a Pantomime come in – they performed Jack and The Beanstalk.  The actors were so funny  and we all enjoyed it.

Technology

In technology we are doing Code.Org. We have different levels to work through. We learn how to code games, for example move a character in different directions.  We found it really interesting to learn how games work.

Lockerbie Countdown

We are getting so close to going to Lockerbie – we can’t wait.  It is going to be AMAZING! .

Primary 6 Class Blog

Welcome to the first blog of Primary 6. We are looking forward to sharing all of our learning with you.

This blog has been written by Adam, Harrison, Oly, Peyton, Alexa and Kaiyah.

Halloween Fun! Can you spot us?

Numeracy

We now use fluid groups in numeracy and chose a silver, gold or platinum challenge. We are enjoying the change to numeracy and like being able to move between groups depending on how we feel about different areas of numeracy. This term we have been learning about place value, partitioning numbers and rounding, We have also been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages and know this is an important life skill. We have been working on rounding decimals to the nearest tenth and hundredth. We have been using our multiplication and division skills to solve problems and have been multiplying numbers up to 5 digits by by 1 and 2 digit numbers.

Literacy

Our class novel this term is Charlotte’s Web by E B White. The story has so many twists and turns and is definitely keeps us on our toes.. We would recommend it as a good read. Every Friday we do dictation which is where we listen to a dictated sentence and write it down. This helps us to practise our spelling words and sentence structure. We are trying to beat our own score from the previous week. We are enjoying Mrs Brock’s spelling challenges on a Tuesday! As part of our writing we have been focusing on personal and impersonal recounts and description. We watched an animation called Catch It. It was all about meerkats and a single pomegranate. We developed our skills in note taking and then wrote wonderful recounts. We are trying really hard to join our handwriting in all of our written work. In grammar we have been learning about different connectives and trying to use these in our written work to make it even better.

Social Studies

Our topic is Robert Owen, New Lanark and the Victorians. We have been learning how important Robert Owen was and how he wanted to make the lives of working men, women and children better.  We learned how New Lanark was powered by water wheels so we made our own which also generated power! Impressive!

The Victorians built cars and railways and they also opened London zoo. We have been learning that there were poor and rich families that some children had to break the law just to survive. If you were a Victorian child over the age of 10 you might have had to work in coal mines, as a chimney sweep or even in the cotton mill.  Children under 10 in New Lanark went to school. Back then schools were very strict with brutal punishments such as getting the cane if you misbehaved. If you didn’t know your tables you got the dunce’s hat. We are so glad we are not Victorian children.

PE

In PE we have been focusing on fitness and improving our stamina and endurance to develop our skills when playing different sports.  In outdoor PE we have a 4 week block of rugby which is great fun.   At the end of November we have a basketball tournament with St Peter’s Primary so we are looking forward to that.

Over the past 4 weeks we have been working with Lesley, our Active Schools co-ordinator on developing our play leadership skills which will help us plan and deliver games to Primary 1 when we become big buddies next year!

When planning a game, we follow the NEDS acronym

N – name the game

E – explain the game

D – demonstrate the game

S – safety points

Skills Based Workshops

In Mrs Kennedy’s class, we have been looking at budgeting. We had an imaginary budget and we could choose between planning a party with £2,000 pounds or creating a child’s playhouse with £10,000 to spend. In Mr Connor’s class, we have been learning about keeping healthy. We had images of different foods and had to guess how much energy it would give us. We ran on the spot for 60 seconds and saw the different places our heartbeat came from. We also had three hula hoops and each hula hoop meant a different thing -like carbohydrates, protein and fat. In Ms Cassidy’s class we were learning about planning trips including using bus and train timetables. We planned 3 trips . We planned a trip to Nandos and we had to choose our own way of transportation, what we would eat and how much it would cost.

Chef Chebe

Last week we had a visit from Chefe Chebe to help us celebrate Black History Month. We loved it.  He told us stories, taught us how to play the drums and we played a brilliant game with a partner.  We really hope he will come back and visit us again.

Lockerbie Countdown

We are really looking forward to Lockerbie. The countdown is on!
