Literacy – reading – Picture Perfect

Lily: I liked learning about Picture Perfect because we got to make our own picture frames and decorate them with our parents and it was really fun.

Kaitlyn: I thought the book was quite interesting and I’d never read anything about a family like this.

Arwyn: I liked reading the book because it showed us you don’t always need to be perfect.

Morris: I liked doing Picture Perfect because the illustrations helped us to picture it and to know what its about.

Leo: I liked how in the book we learned that not every family is perfect.

 

Primary 5 are moving onto reading Fantastic Mr Fox and have begun exploring the novel through reading comprehension, drama and metalinguistics.

Writing – descriptive

Morris: I liked doing descriptive writing because you got to use more adjectives and we got to write about different things not just one big story about one thing.

Caled: I really liked doing descriptive writing on the laptops because I think it was really fun and instead of having Ms Ali help us, the laptop helped us with spelling mistakes.

Kaitlyn: I quite liked learning about the Greek gods and it was quite fun.

 

Writing – instructional 

Halle: I like doing the den-building instructions because everyone’s was different and we got to write them on Chromebooks. I’m excited to do more.

Harley: I like knowing how to set out instructions because it’s a good life-skill if you become a Lego-creator you need to know how to write instructions.

Morris: I like doing instructional writing because we watched a video about how to build a den, but you could do it using another method if you wanted to.

Primary 5 are continuing this writing topic in Term 3 and will be learning to write instructions for activities such as How to Plant a Seed.

Maths – place value, fractions, decimals, percentages, addition, subtraction, dividing, multiplication

Shea: I like that we are learning about percentages and decimals because you can use it in future jobs.

Olivar: I liked doing fractions and addition because its hard and it’s a challenge, especially silver and gold.

Lucy: I found multiplication really fun because its my favourite and its fun to count up in timestables. I found some tricky so I made up my own songs to learn them and it helped me a lot.

Ibrahim: I liked multiplication because I really enjoy doing it, I like the challenge of it.

Elliot: I liked learning more about dividing and other strategies that we can use.

Sophie: I love the fact that we can learn new strategies and when we were stuck we could use them it makes things a lot easier. I like that we can take the resources to help us if we’re stuck too.

Topic – Home and Away (Scotland and Greece)

Harley: I liked when Orpheas came in to give us Greek food to try and it was so good! I really enjoyed the dancing too  – it was cool.

Florence: I also loved the dancing because it was hard but also really fun.

Leo: I liked that we got to learn about tartan and make it because everyone’s was different.

Caled: I liked learning about Greek traditional dress because we got to make our own patterns.

Max: I liked learning the differences between Greece and Scotland and how our traditions are different.

Architecture 

Halle: I am looking forward to learning about how buildings are built and how old they are.

Lucy: I am really excited to learn Scotland’s main style of buildings because I don’t know much about that.

Jessie: I am looking forward to the topic because I think it’ll be a really interesting topic to learn about.

Walter: I am super excited because I will get to know more about Scotland and the buildings.

Primary 5 will be exploring this topic further this term learning about famous architects that are Scottish or have designed buildings in Scotland.

Welcome to our first Primary 5 blog.  We have settled into Primary 5 and we are enjoying all new learning and being given the leadership opportunity as Attachment Ambassadors.

Literacy

It has been a busy Term 1.  We have been reading The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo and would like to share our opinions of the novel with you.

Harley: We did well. I enjoyed reading about the War and how tough it would be to live through.

Caled: I liked the book.

Leo: I thought it was good because I liked reading about the war and the school.

Leah: I thought it was emotional but I liked it. I really enjoyed summarising the chapter using drawings (comic strips).

The next novel we will be reading is Picture Perfect and we are looking forward to reading it. After this novel we will be looking at creating media at Christmas time.

In writing, we have been  focusing on recount writing, poetry and descriptive writing.

Morris: It was very good learning about narrative because we got to write a story but there is always a part that goes wrong, which we get to decide how it’s fixed (or not!)

Florence: I quite enjoy writing headlines because they are exciting and fun to make (Newspaper articles).

Elliot: I feel its really good to write a recount text because its fun to write about a new title (theme) each time!

Hannah: I thought it was really fun to learn about narrative writing but there were some tricky parts like coming up with ideas for the plot.

 

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been learning about  time, shape, money, fractions,  decimals, percentages, multiplication and division.  Here are thoughts about our learning.

Arwyn: Learning about fractions, decimals and percentages was hard but the more we did it the more I understood it.

Daniel: Decimals are really fun because you get to do some fractions and percentages at the same time and I found it quite easy.

Lucy: I really liked doing multiplication because I think arrays are a really good strategy and they really helped me, but it can be a bit hard sometimes.

Shea: Percentages has helped with understanding real-life situations like knowing what percentage of battery I have left or helping us with jobs in the future like fixing cars (checking oil).

 

IDL

Our Topic last term was the Rainforest and we created our own rainforest in the classroom.  We investigated the different habitats in the rainforest and identified a range of animals that live in the rainforest. Here are some of our thoughts about the topic.

 

 

Sophie: I loved learning about all the animals of the rainforest and I love how colourful and unique they all were. It was also hard skimming and scanning for information because sometimes the research was hard to find.

Logan: I liked learning about orangutans and gorillas and everything in the rainforest because they are native to another country.

Quinn: I loved learning about the animals’ habitats and how they lived in different layers of the rainforest.

Halle: I liked learning about the layers of the rainforest and about the book – The Great Kapok tree. It was easy to learn about deforestation and it was really interesting.

Morris: I liked learning about the parts of rainforest and different wildlife in the rainforest because it shows there are rare species of animals that do not live in this country.

Harley: I liked learning about the water cycle because it shows us what is happening in the world even though we can’t really see it. It blew my mind how much actually goes on in the world.

 

Our new topic is  Home and Away and we have been learning about the country of Greece.  Here are our thoughts.

Max: I liked learning about Home and Away and getting to try new foods from Greece and comparing it to Scotland.

Hannah: I liked learning some Greek language and I learned how to introduce myself. It was really fun because we had some dancing too.

Leo: I liked learning about the Greek dances and tasting the food and comparing it to Scotland.

Layla: I liked the games we played with Greek language and the activities were a lot of fun.

Caled: I loved tasting the food, I really liked the Moussaka and the Greek salad.

Ibrahim: I liked the food because it was interesting and new. It was better having the lesson from someone who is from Greece.

Health & Wellbeing

Earlier in the session we learning about the nurture principles and we went on to investigate hygiene practices when preparing food.  We applied this knowledge to making fruit kebabs and loved doing this.

This term we are learning about keeping healthy through fitness and we will be creating our circuits and practising them outside as part of our outdoor PE activities.

 

 

Expressive Arts

We are enjoying making and reading music as part of the Fundamentals of Music programme and we will share our talents in a few months time.  We are lucky to have our musical theatre sessions and we look forward to sharing our learning at the Christmas Show.

Science

We continue to enjoy Science with Mr Connor.  Earlier in the session we investigated day and night and we created diagrams of our learning in the playground.
