Happy New Year!\u00a0 We hope everyone had a restful break and had time to relax and enjoy with friends and family.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another busy term has passed.\u00a0\u00a0The children\u00a0performed\u00a0spectacularly\u00a0in the\u00a0Nativity\u00a0and we are proud of their confidence and effort in this.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They\u00a0had a fantastic time at our Christmas party\u00a0with our\u00a0special visitor.\u00a0\u00a0Lots of learning also took place.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In literacy we are continuing to learn our sounds (single phonemes) and will learn all sounds before moving onto the joined phonemes (sh, th, ch, ng …).\u00a0\u00a0In school we use the pink magnetic boards to help us to make, blend and read simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We use the\u00a05 finger\u00a0strategy – Say it,\u00a0Make\u00a0it,\u00a0Break\u00a0it,\u00a0Blend\u00a0it,\u00a0Read\u00a0it, Write it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Say it – say the word<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make it – with magnetic letters on the pink board<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Break it – break the word up by separating the sounds (phonemes)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Blend it – starting at the beginning, move the sounds and blend the sounds<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(phonemes) together<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Read – read the word aloud<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Write it – write the word 2 times, remembering a finger space between each word\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every week we have 3 new common words which we are learning to recognise with increasing accuracy to develop our reading fluency. We are also continuing to develop our phonological awareness. Please continue to share nursery rhymes with us, helping us to learn these and recite them back to you.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone has a reading book and is enjoying sharing them\u00a0in class and at home.\u00a0\u00a0Please remember to bring your reading book to school\u00a0every day\u00a0for the activities in class.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can continue to help at home by\u00a0encouraging us to recognise and\u00a0identify\u00a0all of\u00a0the sounds (phonemes) and\u00a0common words\u00a0that have been taught by using the flashcards.\u00a0\u00a0You can practise the correct formation of\u00a0all of\u00a0the phonemes – doorwayonline.org<\/span> is a super interactive resource for letter and number formation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Also, you could encourage us to sound out and blend sounds (phonemes) together to read words.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In numeracy we have been learning to count forwards using the forward number sequence and count backwards using the backwards number sequence, to identify numbers, before, after and in between in a sequence of numbers within 10 and to add within 10 to name a few things.\u00a0\u00a0We have also been adding to 5 and 10, even beyond that for a challenge!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This term we will be learning to\u00a0recognise and\u00a0identify\u00a0numbers to 20.\u00a0\u00a0We will be doing lots of counting using our forwards and backwards number sequence to 30.\u00a0 We will also be\u00a0subtracting\u00a0within 5 and then within 10\u00a0and\u00a0exploring\u00a0money.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can help us by\u00a0practising\u00a0formation of\u00a0all of\u00a0the numbers and number names to 20, continuing counting on and counting back orally to increase our confidence and\u00a0continuing\u00a0to encourage us to find numbers,\u00a0shapes\u00a0and patterns in our environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our new Social Studies topic for January\u00a0is\u00a0Scottish Weather.\u00a0\u00a0We are looking at what types\u00a0of weather we have in\u00a0Scotland, we are recording weather and comparing to forecasts to see how\u00a0accurate\u00a0it is.\u00a0\u00a0We will be making rain gauges to\u00a0record\u00a0rainfall,\u00a0we will estimate before to see how much we think is possible \u2013 parents are welcome to guess too!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We are also looking at the 4 seasons and how the weather changes in relation to these in Scotland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

STEM with\u00a0Mr Connor<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Last term we learned about our 5 senses – how they work and how we use them to interact with the world. We did\u00a0hearing\u00a0tests (why not try it? Mr Connor\u00a0can’t\u00a0hear 15K or beyond:\u00a0<\/span>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bWpSePfbTxc<\/span><\/a>\u00a0). We also discussed optical illusions and had a taste test session where we found out that our least favourite foods\u00a0was\u00a0mushroom and\u00a0pickles\u00a0(strangely enough, our favourite was chocolate muffin, go figure…). We also went on senses expeditions round the school to see what we could see or hear (we managed to sneak in and out of P1 without Mrs Mark even hearing us! \ud83d\ude04)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This term we are learning about forces (pushes and pulls on things). We will be learning how words like stretch, pull,\u00a0twist\u00a0and squish can help us make things as well as taking part in fun activities which show us how our own bodies use forces every day.
