P1 Class Blog May 2025

We hope you all had a lovely Easter break and enjoyed some sunshine, at least in the first week.

Last term was a fun filled term with World book Day, our Burns Supper, Neilsland’s Got Talent, the class open day and Comic Relief Danceathon.  Wow – lots that kept us all busy!

Numeracy

We have been learning to:

  • count forwards using the forward number sequence and count backwards using the backwards number sequence up to 30.
  • subtract within 10.
  • recognise coins to £2
  • identify and make o’clock times on analogue and digital clocks

This term we will be learning to:

  • identify missing numbers within addition and subtraction sums
  • identify odd and even patterns within a sequence of numbers
  • recognise ordinal numbers to 20
  • recall and memorise our number bonds to 10
  • Recognise ½

How can you help us?

  • use number flashcards, help us to recognise and identify all numerals to 50
  • use toys or objects to accurately count out amounts within 20
  • practise formation of all of the numbers and number names to 20
  • continue to encourage us to find numbers, shapes and patterns in our environment

Literacy

We have completed our single phonemes and we know the whole alphabet.  We are now learning our joined phonemes (sh, th, ch, ng …). In school we use the pink magnetic boards every day to help us to make, blend and read simple CVC (consonant, vowel consonant) words.  You can use the boards at home to practise this too.

We use the 5 finger strategy – Say it, Make it, Break it, Blend it, Read it, Write it.

Say it – say the word

Make it – with magnetic letters on the pink board

Break it – break the word up by separating the sounds (phonemes)

Blend it – starting at the beginning, move the sounds and blend the sounds (phonemes) together

Read it – read the word aloud

Write it – write the word 2 times, remembering a finger space between each word

Every week we have 3 new common words which we are learning to recognise with increasing accuracy to develop our reading fluency.  We are sending home a common word sheet, please keep this at home to practise our common words.

How can you help us?

  • share different kinds of stories with us (fiction, non-fiction, poems …)
  • encourage us to recognise and identify all of the sounds (phonemes) that have been taught.
  • practise the correct formation of all of the phonemes – doorwayonline.org is a super interactive resource for letter and number formation and you have a copy of the formation rhymes we use in school.
  • encourage us to sound out and blend sounds (phonemes) together to read words.
  • encourage us to recognise and read all common words which have been taught with increasing accuracy to develop fluency in reading
  • encourage us to identify words in our environment.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Social Science

We learned about Scottish foods, what foods are Scottish and where some of them are produced/grown.  During the Burns Supper we tasted haggis, neeps and tatties which had varying responses from the children – from yuk to yum!  We also made shortbread and ‘jeelie’ pieces.  We also had Eshan’s mum and dad in to share food from another culture.  We tasted dates, mango lassi and gulab jamun.  What a treat! We were able to give our own opinion on our likes and tastes.

HWB

In PE we have been using our skills learned to make small games for groups to play.  We took on leadership roles to design our own games then we led children from the nursery in these games and helped them to play them.  This furthered our skills in play, responsibility, relationships and self-confidence.  We demonstrated that we  are ready for the challenges of Primary 2.

Science

In Science we investigated sound and carried out lots of experiments to learn how sound waves travel. We learned a lot about musical instruments and had a visit from Mrs Cullie’s sister who demonstrated how sound is used to make music. We loved listening to her playing the flute and this inspired us to make our own musical instruments.

RME

We learned about Easter in RME and the customs associated with this Christian tradition. We looked at foods related to Easter and got the opportunity to taste hot cross buns. We were able to say if we liked them or not. We decorated Easter eggs and made our own Easter baskets.

P1 Blog January 2025

Happy New Year!  We hope everyone had a restful break.

Another busy term has passed.  The children performed brilliantly in the Nativity and we are proud of their confidence and effort in this.   They had a fantastic time at our Christmas party with our special visitor.  Lots of learning also took place

In literacy, we are continuing to learn our sounds (single phonemes) and will learn all sounds before moving onto the joined phonemes (sh, th, ch, ng …).  In school we use the pink magnetic boards to help the children to make, blend and read simple CVC (Consonant, vowel consonant) words.

Read – read the word aloud

Write it – write the word 2 times, remembering a finger space between each word

Every week we have 3 new common words which we are learning to recognise with increasing accuracy to develop our reading fluency. We are also continuing to develop our phonological awareness. Please continue to share nursery rhymes with us, helping us to learn these and recite these back to you.

Everyone has a reading book and is enjoying sharing them in class and at home.  Please remember to bring your reading book to school every day for the activities in class.

You can continue to help at home by encouraging us to recognise and identify all of the sounds (phonemes) and common words that have been taught by using the flashcards.  You can practise the correct formation of all of the phonemes – doorwayonline.org is a super interactive resource for letter and number formation.   You can also encourage us to sound out and blend sounds (phonemes) together to read words.

In Numeracy we have been learning to count forwards using the forward number sequence and count backwards using the backwards number sequence, identify numbers, before, after and in between in a sequence of numbers within 10 and also to add within 10.

This term we will be learning to recognise and identify numbers to 20 and to count accurately within 20. We will be doing lots of counting using our forwards and backwards number sequence to 30.  We will also be subtracting within 5 and then within 10, exploring money and identifying and making o’clock times on analogue and digital clocks.

You can help us by practising formation of all of the numbers and number names to 20, continuing counting on and counting back orally to increase our confidence and continuing to encourage us to find numbers, shapes and patterns in our environment.

We learned all about 2d shapes during our beyond number lessons and enjoyed going on a shape hunt around the school. We could all name shapes like square, circle, rectangle and triangle and were able to say how many sides and corners they had. Some of us were even able to identify trickier shapes like hexagon and pentagon. We also had lots of fun learning about capacity and enjoyed measuring water using lots of different vessels.

Our science topic for Term 1 and 2 was water so we had a great time investigating the different ways water can change from one state to another. We loved rescuing Paw Patrol characters from the ice and making our own ice gardens. It was very interesting to see how the ice melted and we worked in groups to explore what different substances would make ice melt quicker.

We look forward to learning more this term and to getting better weather for outside play/learning.

P1 Class Blog Term 1/2 2024

Welcome to everyone in Primary 1 and to our new and existing families.  What a busy session we have had so far, learning and sharing with each other, especially at our Primary 1 curriculum event.  Thank you to all who managed to attend.

We also enjoyed our annual Halloween celebrations with our wonderful Halloween party in the afternoon arranged by our Parent Council.  The costumes were excellent, and everyone left with a treat!

We are working hard in literacy and are doing a great job of learning our sounds. We have learned our first few sounds a, t, s, i, p, n, r, m, d, e and have been using this knowledge to blend and to read words.  We will continue to learn new sounds so we can build new words every week.  Common words are our words we learn every week and can be tricky.  Please use the sound cards and the common word cards to practise at home.  These are yours to keep, cut out and use as you wish.  We have started reading books and are enjoying taking these home to read with adults.

In numeracy we have been learning to count and form our numbers to 10 correctly.  We have been learning numbers before, after and in between, it’s tricky so we will keep practising – keep challenging us at home by asking us questions!  We have moved onto addition and we are enjoying creating bigger numbers with our calculations.   In class we have lots of different activities that help us to learn and we enjoy the challenge of completing target tasks independently.

We have been lucky to have special visitors into our class for our People Who Help Us topic.  We were already very knowledgeable in this topic so we built on what we knew and looked at people who help us in our community.  We had Glenda, the school nurse, in to visit and Mrs Fiona Lawrence, a nurse at a local hospital, in to tell us about their differing roles in nursing.  It was so much fun and Fiona brought in bandages so we could try bandaging each other and our teddies, she also brought some fruit for us to try to highlight the health benefits.  Amazing!   This term we are looking into mapping our local area.  You may see us out and about in the area doing research!

We will soon be busy rehearsing for our Christmas shows.  Time flies when we are enjoying ourselves!  We look forward to entertaining everyone in December with our two shows.   Look out for more information nearer the time.
